I finally watched Dope last night. I feel like that is a movie that was very unique in Hollywood and could have been recognized, although I am not sure exactly where. The story itself is one that is pretty common but the way it was done was good.

I suppose the only way to solve it is to have each group have it's own award show, the winner(s) of which become the nominees for the Oscars. So the winner of the BET awards best picture/actor/actress get's automatically nominated. Of course, that means starting a white's only award show (so no go), and then everyone would just bitch about not winning (so no go), and surely certain other groups like the LBGTs will want the same treatment (so no go), and everyone will still whine when they don't win...

its easy, add a people of color category. toss in all the blacks, hispanics, asian, reptilians and what have yous and then they can give honkies their awards without any guilt.

The "separate but equal" category?
it guarantees a minority oscar winner every year.

if they like the academy could smudge up the trophy's bronze some just for them.

Does anyone disagree that it's easier for a white person to get the roles that position them for an Oscar nom than it is an ethnic actor?

Other than Idris Elba, there were no other good candidates this year. And Idris didn't get nominated because Netflix produced it.

but that would make sense if its a numbers game. Its more like a white person will get hired for any job, because whites make up 67-80% of the population, depending on how you count mixed races and some hispanics (some pass as white, many don't obviously). Therefore for every 100 jobs, you would expect 67-80 to be filled by a white person - just like 50 should be filled by a man, and 50 by a woman, on average. Some fields of course are lopsided - nurses or teachers tend to female, police/military/firefighters/garbage men are male, etc. Sometimes we work to try and adjust those numbers.

Playing the numbers game is a bad way to look at it though - it means NBA/NFL needs to stop hiring minorities and only hire white people to balance things out. It means colleges need to start recruiting men and make the standards higher for women.

Indie films are fine, anyone can jump in with a small budget so there really isn't anything holding back the next minority-led version of blair witch or juno or donnie darko or pulp fiction.

big AAA movies are an issue, but again plays into the numbers game - if 50% of your box office is asia and prefer to see white people on screen, and 70% of your domestic box office is white, then you are risking a lot of money not casting bankable stars. To get to that bankable state requires a breakout surprise hit or someone taking a chance on an unknown (actor/director/writer) and hoping it works out. If Will Smith, Chris Rock, etc want to really make AAA black movies they need to put together money syndicates and produce big blockbuster black movies like Fast and the Furious, its interesting that the most obvious solution is not something they seem willing to do. There is plenty of money in the black elite to get this done. Asia interestingly is doing this, they have done a shitty job so far with a few Chinese-backed Hollywood-style movies but they seem to be getting deep into the game, financing stuff like the last Mission Impossible and the next Avatar movies. Indians have their own little world in Bollywood, which produces more movies than Hollywood every year.

Tyler Perry has done more for the cause than Will Smith, who only seems to do stuff for Will Smith.

last nights snl skit was funny though

will smith shouldnt be responsible for "the cause", why should he be? why is it an issue that he went out to make money for himself? and who the hell do you think tyler perry is doing stuff for? hes doing it to make money for himself, yeah his movies have lots of other black actors in it, thats because his movies are made for a black demographic. if you really wantr to get down to it, will smith was one of the actors who paved the way for more black actors getting roles in non thug, non athlete roles.

Are you agreeing that it is harder for a black actor to get the roles that position them for a best actor nomination? Because it sounds like you've just given two reasons why Hollywood execs would favour white actors over blacks

It's hard for ANY actor to get a role that positions them for a best actor nomination.
