I'm not sure there's a single good working NFL coach by Gavin's estimation.

He’s a big Cowboys fan.
Some would say the biggest.

The idea is instead of an onsides kick you have to convert a 4th and X yards play at your own Y yard line.
There'd need to be some other big handicap past making it just a regular game. I could see games turning into some real obscenities late in the game if it were like this and the opposing defense sucked enough.

Looking up stats, apparently surprise onside kicks used to succeed over 40% of the time. That's way higher than I expected. Obviously doing something to up the current success rate will make games more exciting, but you risk making a game feel like total aids if the opposing team doesn't generally have a better chance of winning in most situations.

Hardly. I called out three specific coaches. And as much as I rag on him I don't know if I'd really call Shanahan an outright bad coach or just a wildly overrated mediocre one.

Some people haven't forgotten his involvement in 28-3.

That it was 40% is kind of great, imo. That's a way better outcome because it ostensibly relied on how well coached and prepared your team is and your strategy in choosing when to use the surprise onside. If they do the 4th and X thing it still won't be a surprise so it removes that layer of the game. The regular onsides back then was something like 20-24% and that seems fitting enough for knowing it's coming in an end game situation and reinforces special teams as an important third pillar of a successful team.
