That really is the crux of it. There was a brief period in time when working at Blizzard was the hot shit so you had super talented nerds wanting to work there. They made all kinds of crazy awesome back end stuff. I remember talking to Vektor about some new package deployment thing they were doing that was supposed to allow for 200+ players to be in the same area and while my eyes glassed over, he was obviously super passionate and excited about it.
But now gaming is just sort of 'meh.' Most developers will pull whatever off the shelf stuff they can to save money, hire some kid out of college who doesn't know better to slap it together. The talented nerds now are all working for AWS, Google, etc... making $250k+ salaries. They aren't going to work for a gaming company living in a closet with three other dudes, where they will also have to handle help desk tickets and will get laid off 3 weeks after the launch of the game regardless of how well it does.
