if we see stuff like ant man, aquaman, green lantern, and shazam fail we'll probably see them stick to more mainstream heros.

End of the day i don't see why it wouldn't really follow comic trends. people eat up x-men, spidey, batman, wolverine, etc. no one gives a shit about the lamer superheroes. fuck aquaman

i have a feeling ant man is gonna suck and bomb hard too, michael douglas is like box office poison now
Aquaman launched Vincent Chase's career man I hear it blows Spiderman out of the water opening day...

When they announced an Aquaman movie I was really hoping James Cameron and Adrien Grenier were attached to it. I was disappointed.

It would have been funny if Grenier were playing Aquaman. They should have done it for grins.

Comic book movies are so popular because "original" sci-fi has an exceptionally poor track record at the movies, James Cameron is pretty much the only director that can make it work. Think about it. In between Terminator 2 and Avatar, how many science fiction movies that were not direct adaptations of a previously existing book or comic book turned out to be hits? Independence Day is the only one I can think of.
Many Cult films, some hits.

From that list, only The Fifth Element and Pitch Black are good. Matrix is like from a far superior league.
28 Days Later...isn't that a zombie/outbreak movie?

You have a very loose definition of great.

That is to say you think anything that isn't shit is great.

I regret putting species in that list and maybe cube. I will never regret Stargate, but really its SG1 and RDN that built that bridge for me.

If the Matrix had been a standalone I would consider it one of the best sci-fi movies. With the sequels, it's basically upper echelon shit-tier. You can't watch it again after seeing 2 and 3 with the same appreciation.

I didn't say "good movies," I said "hit movies." Hollywood only cares about the money, and before Avatar, original sci-fi generally didn't make much money. Actual hits that made like 4x their budget or more were stupidly rare. Out of all of those, only Armageddon, Independence Day, and The Matrix qualify. In comparison, when Hollywood makes sci-fi based off an established story they tend to make shitloads of money even when the movie is terrible or when the connection between the movie and story is basically in name only. See: Both Fantastic Four movies, Spider-Man 3, Batman & Robin, I, Robot, the 1997 Godzilla movie.

You can pretend that the 2nd two movies were written and made by somebody else wanting to capitalize on the first movie. This way the first movie just stands alone and is left with Neo being a god. I would also add that the animations that were supposed to be a combination of prequels and sequel stories were just about as good. I wonder if in twenty years we will see a remake of The Matrix given how Hollywood loves to remake classics.

I actually enjoyed Stargate a lot. It ranks in the top 20 sci fi of all time for me. Both the music and the concept were pretty awesome with the series taking it even further.

Dark City bombed. Pitch Black did pretty good considering how low its production budget was.

I think the quantity of superhero movies won't be a problem. But I feel like it's already getting a little formulaic and exhausted. I can't be the only one that doesn't want to see a origins sequence for the top 10 superheros (the batman/superman/spiderman/ironman/wolverines) ever again.

Shit, after the last Superman having an hour long scifi sequence of Russel Crowe doing pre-origin work (which I loved!) and an entire tv series dedicated to Clark Kent's childhood it's a dead horse. Every Superman character in our generation should completely skip the origin sequence.

I'm also a bit exhausted from the classic stories that have already been done. Once Thanos finishes up in the Avengers movies you can't do it again for a while. I don't want to see the green goblin fight spiderman again for at least a decade. However there's a huge number of stories from decades of comics you can draw from, or just make an entirely new sequence because why not?

You also have a huge number of 'guardians of the galaxy' tier characters, but to make it work you need a genuinely good movie.

Marvel is behaving like DC back in the day. Back in the day, DC was the established company, where none of the characters had any sort of flaws. They never lost; they were gods. They also didn't have any sort of moral defect. Comic book readers got bored of DC, and sales dropped. Marvel came along and gave their characters real weaknesses, and they had all sorts of flaws. Thor acted like a petulant child, so Odin locked him the body of a cripple. Iron Man flew around drunk, a bottle of Jack Daniels and he was toasted the entire issue. Hank Pym beat his wife and had multiple personalities. Wolverine killed everything in sight. Cyclops needed his visor to control his power. Professor X was in a wheelchair. The list of weaknesses and moral failings goes on and on with Marvel. It made the characters "real."

If Marvel is going to have long term success, then the characters need to be the darker versions than what we are seeing, to make the characters compelling. Other than that, we'll keep getting cookie-cutter stories. I'm OK with seeing all of these characters come to life, but I don't think the general populace is going to want keep seeing the same story over and over again. This might not jive with Disney wanting to sell toys, because parents are not going to want that. But watching Daredevil on Netflix gives me hope that Marvel is trying to take risks.
