Dragonlance games made you think. I was a bit too young for them. Personally I preferred Ultima's, Wizardry, etc..

But I played the shit out of these too.

Spelljammer also deserves honorable mention on every CRPG list. Dark Sun was pretty awesome too later.

Well the Dragonlance games were newer so I'd imagine they improved on the system a little. I never finished Pool Rad in my youth although I always wanted to.

1. EverQuest - game that literally changed my life.
2. Fallout - totally cohesive setting and theme, and hybrid combat was a revelation.
3. System Shock (the original) - still the most memorable villian in any game I've ever played.
4. Ultima 4 - immersive beyond belief, cloth map, avatar pendant = win.
5. Demon's Souls - breathed new life into gaming and made me realize there are still people making the games I love.

Close encouters:

Diablo - duh.
Incubation - turn-based alien hunt very few played. Awesome game.
XCom - ugh. hard to leave this off the list.
Bioshock - trumped by System Shock, but still.
Gold Box SSI games
X-wing vs Tie-fighter - many a class was skipped.
