I think this is true in general, but Stephen King is probably the greatest writer of his time and he couldn't finish a story for shit. I can't think of a single one that had a real satisfying ending. He had some fine ones but the majority are just garbage. The journey to get there, though, was usually pretty fantastic.

Edit: I thought of one, The Jaunt.

He can finish a short story or novella; its the long ones where he has trouble. Duma Key and From a Buick 8 were both good start to finish, though.

I didn't hate the ending of the Dark Tower series as much as some people did but it wasn't exactly satisfying. "The Stand" really pissed me off. I wouldn't call King the greatest writer of his time but he was certainly popular and prolific. I've probably read more of his books than any other writer and a lot of them are great but I wouldn't call any of them literature. They're good stories and some of them have some really great characters and quite a lot of them end well but there are some notable exceptions. "It" had a pretty goofy ending as well.

"The Stand" really pissed me off.

No one gives a shit because it's Gerald's Game but Gerald's Game is 100% over and then keeps going for another 30 pages. The Stand is definitely worse because it sets up a major armed conflict between Boulder and Vegas to never pay that off to then do the "story is over here's fifty more pages anyway" shit.

Storm of the Century has a solid ending.

40 years from now (if people still even know how to read) fans of the genre will still know and love Tolkien and Jordan. Martin will be nothing more than a footnote.

Tolkien is right up there with Poe and Lovecraft. His stories will be admired forever. Fuck fat boy.
