As a guy who played MC with buddies back when it was released and did modded MC and played MC with my kids, I dunno, the art style is just good (I get you are talking about faces, but man take a look at hytale, thats some WEW faces right there) and I'd place it in the same vein as the comments about WoW being "cartoony", they are using an engine capable of up-scaling this if they go that route in the future ( totally look forward to whatever april fools prank comes down the line, doing like "Real faces" update for april fools or something ).

The stuff they made just looks amazing.

Some people dislike the Minecraft style graphics, but the same people like MnM's graphics which I think are more of an abomination. EQ's graphics for 1999 were cutting edge for an online game. MnM copies the graphics to appeal to those rose-colored glasses, but in reality they should probably have something more modern even if not cutting-edge.
This is patently false and I really don't see how people can even think this. MNM is not attempting to copy EQ graphics, they have their own style it's called "Fuzzy Troll", napkin art by talentless hacks.

Everquest graphics are leaps and bounds above MNM, and you have to be blind to think otherwise:

This is the player goblin model, which is one of the "best" (according to fans) MNM models (Apr 2026):

This is a Kunark era Goblin from everquest (Apr 2000):

They are both "low poly" but one was designed by a professional artist who was paid for his work and the other looks like kids fingerpainting

Even I, who lacks a single artistic bone in my body (Anyone's who's seen some of my meme's i make in MS paint can vouch for this), can draw better character models than MNM.

Even the ultra low poly goblins from vanilla are better than MNM

I would post more pics of MNM models but the 7 whole fans that they have don't post on the internet, that's the only one I could find and I had to snip that from a youtube video

I'm hoping hey can convey status/rarity on visible equipment without leaning on too many particle effects. It's gonna be tough with the level of detail available to them, but it can for sure be done.

Even that lantern in the above screenshot looks great though, so I think they're on the right track.

The loot that I did see, ya they lean into it. Stuff has movement, haven't seen particle effects.

Obscure things like necklaces have on-character graphics too.

Wifes character, necklace is a bone fetish lookin thing in-game and on character, closely mimics the item.

Stuff like this from the Halfling / Ogre war has me interested, it's a kill-able level 20ish mob:

Pic doesn't do it justice but the totem is stacked 3 high and each tier has motion:

Also, I know casted shadows are nothing new but I thought it was impressive that really..I never had much lag aside from trying to kite in the harpy area which caused me to enter and exit 2 biomes pretty often:

EnigmaFactory EnigmaFactory Had a question about the pillar system (the one where undead mobs spawn around a pillar or ruin). Had a few bosses spawn with no loot at a location in the mountains near osgul. I assumed the system is early days, but did yall want bugreports on that stuff? I thought it was a great option for "I don't wanna go into a dungeon but I wanna XP solo / with a group."

We'll look into it! In the Discord we have Feedback and Bug forums we're using threads there for tracking if you have things you want to share.

Edit: Shoulda mentioned too, there is a full revamp of all the player races on the horizon. Do not expect dramatically different, but we're adding more detail, more customization options, adding more flexibility to the universal UVing system, and retouching the geometry. This has also kept us from expanding the equipment visuals much, as that would cause rework. Thanks for calling out the necklace! That and belts we reflect, despite being just a couple pixels.

Thanks much!

i really meant that in general , the voxel art style doesn't look great. like i see my kid (in developer mode) on minecraft fly over a villiage and it looks goofy and clunky. the cliff edges are jagged and weird. walking through the forrest is a chore because of the weird step up/down.

BUT i think that AoA does a much much better job of the enviroment looking great once you're in it. the scale feels good. the houses and mage tower in town feel detailed enough.

when you walk in the woods , you can look down and notice mushrooms or fungus growing (which you can harvest), small spaces have detail in them.

WoW on the other hand has giant rooms with huge arching doorways and then nothing interactable inside. or generic copy/pasted furniture. I'm enjoying MnM, but most of the rooms have nothing of interest in them. NPC, done. you walk from point A to B, and there is ore/wood/herbs trees etc, but they're very spread out and it's not as dense as what the voxel graphics seem to allow.

I am not a voxel expert, but it feels like AoA has a level of detail in it's enviroment that minecraft doesn't. like more ground textures, or smaller stepups (so it's not just entire cubes, half c ubes, or anglestairs. maybe i haven't payed attention to modern minecraft, but it feels like they're using the tech in a much better way than minecraft.

and my favorate aspect of it is that it MUST be much cheaper and faster to develop for, than modern chase for realism, or high poly models. I want a game that stays true to itself and doesn't drown in stupid ideas due to being staffed by 300 graphic designers who eat paychecks and want their ideas implimented. just let the core design vision flow. we don't need photorealistic humans. we don't need a game that requires the latest video card to play.

I have unpopular internet opinion in that i think that if you have a good art director, quality control, and design control. i don't care if AI make every art asset in the game if it perpetuates a good game. the block men and enviroment have that same feel for me. if one dev can use tools to shit out 300 cool armours fast because he's working with cubes.....good.

It’s even worse than just a lack of talent (you get what you pay for, after all). The typical indie game faces almost no criticism from its insular fanbase, on the contrary they’re constantly heaping praise on any and all dev efforts. Over time this tends to convince people who don’t realize their shit stinks in the first place that it smells like flowers instead.
