They purged the extended universe so who knows. The olde lore was that the mon cal developed them to engage capital ships. Not good at dog fighting. Good at bombing bigger boats

The fact that Disney bought Star Wars, deleted the entire expanded universe, and released the sequels between 2015 and 2019 only to end up in 2026 with a new season coming for a show about Grand Admiral Thrawn and Dark Jedi characters is deliciously ironic.

hey man it was my fav ship in the old ass (talking MS DOS days) X-Wing game/expansion. also i can't remember if Rebels introduced that combined beam thing it showed in the trailer or not.

Disney wanted final authority on what gets to be canon, so a broad sweep and then cherry picking what they thought was best was the route they took

Amazon probably wants to do that with Stargate

There was little to no cherrypicking to begin with. They wiped the slate clean and went their own stupid ass way, removing established characters such as Mara Jade, Ben Skywalker, Jaina and Jacen Solo, and instead going with incel angry Luke, divorced Han & Leia, and just one kid named Ben Solo.

Having Mary Sue Rey come out of nowhere, be no one, then suddenly be a Palpatine and opposite Kylo Ren misguided good boy wanting to turn bad for cool points to his dead grandfather he knew nothing about is a stupid choice when you could have simply used the existing stories of the Solo children, with Jaina becoming an ace pilot and Jedi, and Jacen a Sith lord. You could have used Thrawn as the main menace leading the Imperial Remnant, but instead they went with Snoke and the First Order. It was just absolute retardation across the board when they had literally JUST spent 4 billions securing the franchise and all its content and then decided to take nothing from it.

They only started cherrypicking when they realized they messed up. That's when you started seeing Thrawn, Dark Jedi and other similar expanded universe concepts or characters. There's even rumors about Mara Jade in the upcoming Starfighter film.

To bring Thrawn in and not spend any money on effects like an upper body muscle suit to make his shoulders and chest come out further than his belly was peak failure.

There's no big screen hype for Thrawn so he'll likely continue to be the butt of a joke Ala Obi-wan in the Obi-wan series where he is completely humiliated while his belly hangs out like a fat cuckold.

I don’t think that was in X-Wing, I seem to remember you could press ‘x’ maybe to cycle individual fire or linked fire? It would rotate through each cannon or just fire all at once. God, that was 35 years ago or something?

Video game B-wing had triple lasers and triple ion cannons while the Rebels S2E7 version was the same weapon type as the Ahsoka trailer. Originally it was developed at Research Station Shantipole but Rebels invented a planet with the Shantipole name instead.

The Tie Fighter game directly refuted the vertically dropped bombs from Episode 8 with the Missile Boat. The SLAM (SubLight Acceleration Motor) would massively boost the propulsion of the ship which in turn increased the velocity of notoriously slow heavy rockets and space bombs so they could reach capital ship targets before being shot down. The lore was they were designed by Thrawn and specifically pivoted with anti-starfighter loadouts of concussion missiles and proton torpedos to defeat rogue factions using TIE Defenders.

Flying vertically over top of a target to "drop bombs downwards" in space makes zero god damn sense.
