The black kid joking around with everyone is so good.
Also, Olyphant is the best acted part (of course) but also has the best lines. "Animals can get scared, you are not animals anymore, keep walking."

I'm like the worst person on the board if you wanna avoid woke cause generally I just don't care. It would need to be Sandman levels of woke before I even roll my eyes (and even there its on purpose and follows the comics) so I'll end up more positive on things even if others are dunking on it for that. That being said the aliens so far have color blindness and PoC got yeeted constantly this first episode lol, so in the end IDK if it matters since all the main characters are White if that makes a difference for you.
A nice touch I noticed last night is Wendy said it feels quiet in her body which Olyphant attributed to hormones and such but I wondered if that means the procedure eliminated her inner monologue. You would almost think that vanishing would make someone go insane and maybe something to watch for as the series chugs along.

I stayed up too late last night watching both of the episodes. Actually I fell asleep in the first one, probably just because I'm getting old.
Like I said earlier, I'm going to pass judgment after I watch the rest of it, but my hopes aren't exactly high. There's good stuff about it but then there's also really bad stuff.
It looks phenomenal, although every now and then you get a scene where the camera is out of focus for an aesthetic reason and that's kind of weird. The score is okay and there are some stings from Aliens but I was like this is good, but then it gets jarringly generic. I mean one thing about the first two films and even the third one is that the scores for this movies were just so good. You also get modern day pop or rock music at the end of each episode or randomly spliced in which takes you out of the moment.
I was thinking about it they were coffee this morning and we still don't really have any idea who these two dimensional characters are. You look at the run time of the first two movies, and you were able to at least empathize and understand what type of characters you were dealing with, this I just don't care about any of them. Yeah it's only two episodes and there is something starting with the Android girl and her brother which I thought was decent, but everybody else can get melted by alien acid blood for all I care.

said, it's a modern day show for young people to get them hooked into the IP with the painted veneer of the alien franchise. None of it was scary, none of it was exactly tense, and the alien itself is all across the board with what I can and can't do. The fact that it's faster than my alien from the third movie is just retarded.
Also why on Earth are the search and rescue people carrying around firearms?
I've not watched the other shows by this guy and you can tell he's trying but it reeks of boardroom bullshit.

So Earth is controlled by 4 or 5 Corporations at this point and countries are more or less gone. The ship that crashed which was a Weyland-Yutani ship (they control the Western hemisphere) crashed in SE Asia (Thailand) which is under control of the Prodigy corporation so the expectation would be that anyone on the ship would be hostile to them. Notice they didnt really seem to give a fuck about the civilians they went right for the ship.

I understand that it's just kind of goofy. The fact that they're running around saying search and rescue but they're trying to cover their corners and have their guns up was just funny. They also weren't Space Marines or anything and just rent a cops basically for the company.

i only watched the first episode and really enjoyed it, they did a fantastic job capturing the "retro tape deck" vibe of 1979 Alien mixed with modern day medical tech.
I did NOT like the quick cut "horror" moments, throughout the episode they would interject 2-3 frames of "shits going down bad on the ship" and I just found that annoying past the first time
my guess at this point is anyone who mostly enjoyed Alien Romulus (many flaws) will like this, anyone who HATED that movie will probably not like this either

I know I mentioned the modern day rock or pop music but I forgot to mention the stupid ice age movie being interjected into I guess her memories of her brother and her dad. I guess that's Disney I don't know if that's Pixar, who owns who and who has the rights, it was just stupid and I didn't even get the reference because I've never seen the movie.
That sort of stuff really just takes you out of everything. That's why I think this is a boardroom project.

think it's been mentioned but if all things were pretty much the same except w/o a full grown alien running around going full retard I think we'd be in a better spot. obviously board room wanted to have a full alien movie experience condensed into the first hour of the show to grab the dumb viewers, so lazy

"She's just a kid" well none of the grown-ups are behaving like adults and they are choosing the most irresponsible ways to handle everything. I wouldn't want these search and rescue goons being the guys that show up, they are doing their damnedest to get themselves killed on every floor. The lab with a dozen hostile alien species doesn't even have a door, only a random cargo bay along the outer hull had one so they stuck the eggs there.

Which is a retcon. Earth wasn't controlled by corporations but by three different government entities. Most of north and South America was controlled by the united America's, the government the colonial Marines in aliens are from.
If these writers had any intelligence they'd take a page out of the 17th and 18th centuries. The various east india companies wielding vast power doing the bidding of countries.

Because they're trying to capture the magic of The originals and it's falling short. That's no different than when these stupid computer games or video games come out and everybody's expecting the next thing since sliced bread, but most of the time they're just pretty bad. I mean you might get a standout here and there but it's pretty rare.
I want the show to be good because it's my favorite IP since I was a young lad. Some of you were gay for Star Trek or Star wars but this is always been my jam, and I want to like it but my expectations are still pretty low and the first two episodes didn't really do me any favors.
Who cares though you're not paying my damn subscription for stupid Disney plus where I have to watch retarded ads about some fat lady looking to get a $50 copay on her fat drugs. Stupid advertisements aren't making me any happier about the whole goddamn situation.
And Alien 3 specifically the director's cut is still a great movie and I saw it in the theaters over 30 years ago and I loved it! This is not Alien 3.

may not like the show, but thats because his expectations on what makes Alien Alien is not what this show is trying to do and that's a fair complaint and I have no problem with it. He actually watched it and decided it wasnt for him. Good. Thats how it should be.I so far like the show because its trying to do something different then other Alien content, but that doesn't negate his opinion on it. This is kinda catered towards what I like in TV but I kinda figured would have been since Hawley is Hawley.
Its not a surprise to me he is far more interested in what makes a human a human and the ethical consequences of creating artificial life, augmented humans or straight synthetic beings that are property but with human minds loaded into them. And maybe that shoulda just been a different IP but I am not basing his handling of the Alien itself on two episodes when its clear they are moving to an island that is going to turn into horror land for the human occupants as everything breaks containment and starting killing everyone.
