Back then films made a ton of money on VHS rentals though.

That and kids growing up in the 80s/90s would see a lot of it on HBO because they would constantly replay movies. Stuff like Clue, Neverending Story, Little Shop of Horrors, Alien Mine, etc

But that happens today too. Shawshank Redemption was a box office bomb and found it’s audience after it ended up on dvd and television. Now that movie is ranked as one of the best films of all time.

Office Space and Idiocracy were also massive bombs at the box office, but found new life in the dvd/tv market

iirc, Idiocracy was released to meet the minimum requirements from the studio as they didn't like or want to deal with it. shawshank was bad marketing/release strategy.

the 80's and into the 90's, unless you lived in a city it was nearly impossible to see some movies. even some of the bigger movies they might not show up until months later if all. Excalibur was the first movie i really wanted to see in a theater but it didn't come anyway near me. remember the terminator didn't show up in my area till right before the the vhs came out.
