It hit early, so the bullshit was largely overlooked as standard hollywood bullshit, and "mary sues". The full court press, and nonstop inundation of "the message" hadn't fully caught on. so we didn't realize we were under attack of a propaganda machine at that point.

That said, with how bad much of television is today. it might still be welcomed. most tv is JUST propaganda. this was decent tv mixed with propaganda.
Even if I noted my issues with it back then too.

Would never be made today. White protagonists with no race swaps for the main historical characters. The girlbosses are still feminine and shown as women. People bitched about the female leads back when the show was airing. Oh boy, that's nothing compared to what you'd get for characters today. FOH didn't know how good they had it.

I donno, gay. Still a better love story than...

It's well done because it properly portrayed gay for the time period (mostly). They acted in secret and were shunned/banished when found out.

One of the issues with the current trend of blindly applying modern (big city) demographics to movies and TV shows, with a historical setting, is that it erases the trouble/pain real people of those minority demographics went through during the time they lived.

The show had a banger of an opening song and some cool parts for the first 2 seasons or so. But as a whole, it's gay as fuck.

Bah, Max should've sucked some cock and be industrious like the old hag suggested. Humbug.
On the final episode, feels like it could've had a season more, but okay.

the question is

did long john silver really let flint live happily ever after.

the showrunner long ago said he did live relatively happy for a while (i think in the books 30-40 years pass before flint passes the map to billy bones) but i always viewed it as silver didn't let him go and told a story to the rest of the crew. you hear a shot and birds fly off, and it fits the character of silver way better to turn flint into a legend

not something i thought about my first watch, i took what i saw on screen as canon, but lots of interesting theories about it after and lots of ambiguity in the finale
