4 episodes done. This show makes me want to toss all teenagers cellphones into orbit. Still enjoying it, the "others" stuff still isn't back other then the main one so thats good. Mom getting her revenge made my wife and I laugh, she knows the game and the actress is so good at it lol.
So I liked this with an asterisk that the movie is better because there was no sequel bait built in like this show. I dunno how I feel about it but overall it was the most book accurate Carrie adaptation with more built in but Brian De Palma did it better even though he strayed
Binged 5 episodes yesterday, we would have finished the series if my wife wasn't going to the movies with her friends. So far it's excellent. Hopefully the ending sticks the landing, but thus far, it's a very strong recommendation.
Mike Flanagan is the best horror writer/director working is how.
Thinking on this more, I am fine with the ending, I assume it was Amazons request to have the possibility of more seasons, but it certainly can stop where it did and tells a complete adaptation of the book. Was nice to get a book accurate ending of the town.
Carrie and Margret actresses were perfectly casted and written, and I appreciated the change to the mother, felt more in line with what King probably would have done if it wasn't his first book as that was a very simple story. Really everyone was well written, and the kids felt like kids for good and bad.
Even if they don't do more based on the last episode he is definitely gearing up for Dark Tower and bringing all of Kings works together. Amazon just needs to let him do it
Even if they don't do more based on the last episode he is defiantly gearing up for Dark Tower and bringing all of Kings works together. Amazon just needs to let him do it
Heh, one of the mean girls was a child actor in Hollywood. Here is a picture from some baseball show and was also in Glee:
Thank Reddit for pointing this out on one of the "OK-buddy" subs, then the mods swiftly deleting it (even though it was to "own the chuds") to make it into an investigative mystery of who the OP had posted! LINK
starting this now.
I've soured on Flanagan a bit the last few projects. (antichristian/woke bullshit creeping in. as well as, just weak stories.) we'll see.
I kind of picked up on it on the previous comments, but yeah, this is heavily updated for a modern take.
instead of the religious mom, its a right wing doomsday prepper father that kept her isolated and home schooled.
edit:
oh theres the anti-Christian.
also, handsmaids tale, and other "feminist" lit. subtle..
all the mediums/stronggal are women.. this is going the route of female superpowers huh.. lame. "witches are al women" myth.
white families are dysfunctional and broken. Brown families are loving and open.
emaline not being there, seems too obvious. I feel like this should be a bit more subtle. blue solo cup. not being subtle was intentional.
I am now realizing they introduced the father, just so they can blame him, and Carrie's mom is more sympathetic, and actually a victim herself...
this female empowerment/supwerpower shit is pretty cringe. the story is literally about female bullies. so why aren't we getting a manifesto about womens hysteria, jealously, vindictiveness, and envy? how women shouldn't be in positions of power, as this is what they do with it. mean girl bullshit, or psychopathic mass murder. its really strange, as again, the female empowerment bullshit is directly counter to the story actually being told. so what?
I can't tell of the mom using slander, gossip, and lies to ruin her boss who did try to help her, by not just firing her, was also intended irony. like the parallels to what the mean girl is doing can't be an accident right? edit: I suppose this was probably intended as foreshadowing for her doing it to Christie.
I thought Christie's mom coming over and saying, "she gets it from her father, this is really all the mens fault" was going to be thrown back in her face, and she would be called out for her culpability.... but nope.. the show seems to agree with that assessment..
Carrie KNOWING she has superpowers changes the story and culpability big time too. its no longer a spur of the moment psychotic break. now, she knows exactly what she is doing...
starting ep7
so, it was also pretty clear that Emiline was not part of the xmen in episode 1. she wasn't there, and shes constantly edging Carrie on to push her powers and be evil. Commenters mentioning Dark Tower, so is she literally Flagg? And, the mention of Others being at the prom.. im wondering atm, if they are going to pass off much of the rampage as the others and Emaline battling, not Carrie going nuts.
also, how the hell they are going to justify having a prom at all.. just had a student riot... half the class should be expelled.
Margaret not telling Carrie about the Others, and Other hunters like Starbuck is pretty fucked up. unforgivable even with the strained relationship/fear. and this doesn't feel like it was intentional on the writers part.
yeah, they went too far with the riot and injuries. and don't remotely justify there being a prom still. they asserted theres been multiple fights a week. the riot. kids are still injured. lawsuits going on. Also, even if they DID still have prom, individual students can be barred from the prom. thats also a thing they do. where again, half the class should have lost prom privileges due to the riot and fighting in school. they even try asserting other students should be held accountable for posting on the website, not just Christie. which is EXACTLY how you would do that. Christie expelled, everyone else banned from prom.
also, no staff, no security guards, no cops. again, after a riot, and tons of fighting..
ep8
yeah. fuck off with "letting emaline take over". as well as Starbuck trying to kill her, and Others battling. horrible change.
dancing in the street during the rampage would have been a good twist. without emaline again.. instead of the long shocked walk. doing something different with a full psychotic break, and imaginary dancing would have been good.
wait, did they imply her mother had TK powers as well.. oh fuck off.
I do think the casting/acting is nailing it.
I think the Adelaide voice overs are a HUUUUUGE mistake. the toxic shit coming out of her mouth.
Turning Carrie into another netflix, "girls get superpowers and boys/men can't contain them" insanity story is total bullshit. (the power) (oh, that shit WAS on prime as well.)
so, final run down. I think the existence of the Others is fine. I do not like how any of it was handled however. toxic femininity bullshit. man hating. I don't think the final two episodes were good at all. almost completely shit the bed.
acting was fantastic yes. I enjoyed 90% of it.. but that 10% and the ending... anywhere you go from here will be a shitshow.
Evil sexist feminist xmen with Adeline's group.
Margaret is dead. so that interaction is gone. what are we going to do, bring her back as a force ghost?/flashbacks?
Evil "the world is yours to do as you please" Emaline. kill anyone that tries to hold you back. "you have the power." note, the show seems to flip here, and imply Emaline's standard female empowerment message is correct.
evil child killing wine mom starbuck.
I don't care about any of these assholes.
Carrie's culpability. So, this was always complex and an interesting question. in the book, Carrie ACCIDENTLY kills everyone in the school. they drop the blood, Chris knocks tommy in the head. Carrie locks the doors, and turns on the sprinklers. The faulty wiring that electrocutes everyone, and then sets fire to the gas lines was not her fault. but the electrocution, and fire which then kills Tommy, sets her off, and she goes on her rampage through town. she does kill Chris and Billy on purpose. gets home, her mother tries to kill her, she defends herself, and then dies in Sue's arms. Carrie dying then of course washes the question of culpability away.
But as we know... Lanterns, Lindsey clancy, Jean grey, ghost, riri, wanda, shehulk, etc... we suddenly have a rash of "women can't do anything wrong, and aren't responsible for their actions."
This show fucks things up even worse.. Introduces Emaline. emaline "takes over" and murders the students on purpose. its very unclear how much is Carrie and how much is Emaline. there is also now Starbuck trying to kill her, and shooting her.
now instead of coming back to Sue, Emaline shows up for real, to tell Carrie she did nothing wrong, and she is strong and powerful, and the world is hers to conquer.
its a villain origin. and its unclear if the showrunners are aware of that.
as it was, there were so many elements of the series that I'm not sure were intentional. like the school shooter drill at the beginning. they have Carrie freak out and shield Sue. are they aware that Carrie IS a school shooter at the end of the season? they don't seem to be. I didn't catch any intentional callbacks or parallels. Im not sure if Margaret using bullying, rumors, and slander via social media was intentional irony either.
Im not sure if the writers think Emaline or Adeline are evil. or are correct about why if they do.
it starts off with Adeline seeming like the "good feminist" decrying the evil men oppressing strong women, but then of course she wipes sue's mind, and kills Margaret. revealing, on no, shes evil! while Emaline, starts off, power, power, power, and egging Carrie on, then eventually, "freedom, do as you please". of course, they are both evil.
