Goddamnit, don't temp me! I'll probably wait for the summer sale, but that Green Man gaming does have it 15% off. I would imagine steam will probably have something similar then. It looks really amazing but I don't know if the combat mechanics are going to be something I'm going to be good at. Isn't it all quick time reactions or whatever?

Oh and I run it on Medium settings.

You can "auto" the offensive stuff if you don't care about doing ABSOLUTE MAX!!! damage. The defensive stuff you still have to time, however. Although, there is a "story mode" difficulty. I'm not sure if that removes the defensive QTEs or not.

If you've ever played Souls games, the timing necessary on a lot of the combat is a lot more forgiving than those. And dodge is a lot more forgiving than parry if you're still struggling. Plus, with enough farming you can likely just facetank a lot of shit and play it like a more "traditional" JRPG, where you just heal up damage rather than avoiding it.
I could probably swing that. I'm also not good at souls games, so there's that. Story mode might be my speed. I don't know I just haven't played a RPG that has the QuickTime reaction stuff ever, and maybe the only time is occasionally in like a resident evil game. I just can't imagine a whole combat system where you're having a constantly react like that.

Is it fun or at least you can get good enough to where it's enjoyable? I guess I'm just so used to the old school picking the action for your character's turn sort stuff.

It's really not that difficult on normal mode, you're not doing 1 frame parries or anything lol
The only bosses that genuinely require this are optional and the harder 2 bosses in the game

It's still that. The "QTE" reaction stuff only comes in when your character goes to attack or monsters go to attack. In the case of you attacking, timing the QTEs to get "perfects" just increases the damage. But, you can auto those and still do regular damage without any kind of penalty, you basically just don't ever get a "bonus".

When it comes to monsters attacking, the QTEs are just there to completely avoid damage. It's really only necessary if you're trying to kill bosses a lot higher level than you or some of the optional/side content that is difficult (think Omega weapons from FF). Otherwise, the mobs hit you and you take damage like a typical JRPG, which you can heal, cure status effects, etc.

It's still very much a turn-based game. The QTEs aren't nearly as intimidating as they seem. And the game does a really good job with autosaves, so even if you fuck up you can basically try again right away. I've had that happen many times while I "got gud" and learned a bosses moveset better.

Should I pick this up on console or PC? I play 98% on PC but this doesn’t seem like a mandatory mouse/keyboard game.
I have an ultra wide monitor and I don’t think the game natively supports 5120x1440 so I’m thinking console might be the move here.

i'm playing during the day on PC in my office and at night on my xbox in living room cuz wife likes the game, it does cloud saves seamlessly so i lose zero progress and works great. using an xbox controller on both systems. PC version is definitely better visually with DLSS and higher res/FPS but i have zero problems with the xbox version. it is a tad easier parrying on PC with 120 fps.

its on gamepass so its worth just subbing for a month or 3 and then you can play forza horizon, indiana jones great circle, lies of P, mafia games, mass effect, jedi games, and a million other great gamepass games. anything by microsoft first party supports cross play/cross save.

It's on game pass? I've not ever dealt with that subscription system, but I can do it on PC right or is it XBox exclusive?

Goddamnit I'm so tempted to pick this up but I've been trying to finish cyberpunk expansion, and then was planning on jumping over to rogue trader. I guess we'll be getting to the steam summer sales soon so maybe I'll just pick it up then, but it really looks amazing.

Honestly wonder if my computer can run it well.
Dunno what type of PC you have, but a PS5 Pro on Performance is a solid 60fps and looks good. My PC is far better and has no issues at all Epic settings (1440p).

Story mode has the mobs do a bit less dmg and gives you a slighty better dodge/parry window, but that advantage only really lasts til Act III where the side content will smack you down regardless.

There is cross-save between PC and Xbox?

pretty much every new gamepass game out in the last 2 years comes on PC and xbox. Its not steam, you have to use the xbox app on windows, but for the past 2-3 years they have all been win64 installs and none of that encrypted UWP shit from before that was a hot mess. You can edit saves, use nexus mods, install reshader DLLs, whatever just like any steam install. Only thing that makes steam better is easier use on steam deck.

and yeah a lot (but not all) gamepass games now are cross save/play so you can switch back and forth between an xbox and PC seamlessly all using the same save, can even play streaming if you wanna use a phone/tablet/deck. clair obscur works perfect as does call of duty or flight simulator or forza.

while i don't care for the timed defense being so vital (at times). the combo-wombo range is pretty impressive building your guys out.

That's awesome. Like I said, I've just never used that service I didn't really know much about it. I thought it was only for Xbox.

Thanks.

You get the first 14 days for a dollar, so it's not exactly breaking the bank if you want to try it out. I used the old conversion trick back when it was lucrative for a 3-year Ultimate membership.

Shit! Finally finished... not sure what to say about that ending, other than it was powerful and interesting. Would make a great HBO show... Great game, by the end my fingers were getting sore from all the fucking parrying so glad to be done. Finished at 37 hours, perfect length as I was getting over the timing and constant QTE. Love the story, the setting, the combat (until the very very end) and the world building. So far, quite easily my GOTY. Very neat game.

It mostly feels like a 90s era JRPG. It's whimsical and often very silly, but it's entirely bereft of the current era of weeb-shit that has ruined so many games.
