watch the Cowboy bebop movie: "knocking on heaven's door".

samurai shamploo was a big step down from cowboy bebop. try black lagoon instead, it's essentially cowboy bebop set in the south china sea. although it never really completed as an overall story.

edit: another really solid show is Ghost in the shell: stand alone complex, especially the first season with the laughing man is top notch anime, although way more high brow than most other animes.
I can second Black Lagoon. I really enjoyed it. There's a completely unsubtle homage to Terminator 2 that sold me even more on the whole series.

I had this series on my "give in and try to watch it without any pre-conceived notions" list, until I just watched that clip... Nope... done... I'll just pull out the boxed set I have and rewatch the original.

The debut of Ed...who is now gender non-binary and uses they/them as pronouns!

LOL, this clip is so bad I thought it was a cosplaying youtube channel at first. It literally does look like this is from a small hardcore youtube cowboy bepop fan, and not a major studio. The person playing Ed is some of the worst acting I've ever seen. (Seriously, the ONLY character they should have changed to translate better to live action was Ed, and seemingly Ed is the only character they kept all the mannerisms of...Its uncanny how bad the direction in this all is)

Holy fuck, my expectations were so low that they didn't exist and somehow this show still manages to disappoint me. LOL. This might actually go into the "so bad its actually entertaining to make fun of" category.
How...can...anyone...like...this...SHIT??
Ed is atrocious. It's like a YT parody but made for Facebook.
And why Spike is acting like a drunk depressed dirtbag?
Sorry but if you are a fan or at least like the original show, you can't like this, you just can't.
Please China, just let another of your citizens eat another bat that fucked a pangolin and end our misery.

I am so glad I just stopped watching the show about 25 minutes in. I like the world. I just wish they would not have written it so poorly.

That clip of ED. Seriously that looks like something you would watch on Sesame Street or Barney. I want to blame the actor but the director is the one that accepted it.

Was the original script written for children? The show feels like something initially written for children. Somebody saw the script and thought adding violence and adult themes while leaving the characters and acting, would make a great show.

After watching Arcane, I truly believe in the balance of the universe. This show swings that pendulum all the way to the other side.

Holy Fuck at that scene with ED...................................

I honestly don't get the complaints about Ed? Do people just think it's cringey because it's live action instead of a cartoon? That's almost exactly what a live action Ed is going to be like. Did people not even watching the fuckin' anime?

I'm failing to see how that clip with Cho is played that far off from the above compilation.

Finished the whole thing, enjoyed it for what it was. Being that there will never be another anime and this is the best we got, I'm ok with it. 7/10

Sure, it was cringey in the anime, but at least was in cartoon format. Seeing someone attempt to copy that exactly is exponentially worse in live action. Toning it down significantly would work wonders. Well, not wonders, but it would suck less... and it'd still suck.

Ed in this demonstrates why you can't do literal anime-to-live action translations for a lot of properties. It's always a Monkey's Paw type of deal. People don't realize the curse they are asking to be unleashed lol

It's mostly baffling to me. Yea, ED was terrible in the original series and them trying to accurately portray it is not smart. But why would they go for that, and then when they are dealing with Faye they just shrug and say fuck it, lets do what we want.

I can't tell if you're trolling or not. If you are just being a retard, then I have to ask why the director didn't force the actors to play out those really exaggerated, stupid anime faces that are frequent in this show. You know, the faces that get drawn that way to convey an emotion without the dozens of subtle muscles in a human face that are normally used to convey said emotion?

Oh, because that would have been retarded. Just like it would be retarded for a director to take 'goofy kid shit' in an anime, which is clearly exaggerated because its supposed to be in a stand in for all the more subtle mannerisms of RL and have that be translated DIRECTLY to live action. Human expression in the real world has a lot more avenues of communication, which is why things have to be exaggerated in anime.

Being a silly kid in RL is not the same as being one in anime. Fuck sake.

I can't wait to hear how Ed was supposed to be "played straight" in a fucking live action adaptation of an anime character who was already exaggerated as shit..

I don't really care that much about the Ed scene. it's sort of faithful to the anime an into keeping Eds character. what gets me in this show is more the westernized fluff they put in like the casino scene at the start of the first episode. or the sitcom scene posted a couple of pages back here. it's just grating that they try to drag out each 20 minute episode into 50 minutes. and how they take iconic scenes from the anime and then change out characters and events so they completely lose their magic.

I saw what they did to the spike vs vicious church scene. absolute travesty.

Can't wait to have the director insist Spike make this face in live action...After all, have to 1:1 translate, right?

This is exactly the case. There is tons of shit that is acceptable or even good in animation that becomes painful to watch in live action.

There is a reason no anime property has ever translated well into live action (Japanese made Death Note movie may be the lone exception) and that clip of Ed is pretty much why. They could have made it snarky and eclectic without turning into the fucking Jacko Energizer commercial from the fucking 80s.

There's a big gap between played straight and copying the anime exactly (which as you just said, is exaggerated as shit).

Short of casting an actual 10 year old, I'm not sure how the fuck you'd even really translate Ed to live action that differently.

I mean, sure, the scene is cringey. But, so was Ed, even in cartoon form. Lithose just wanted to complain about it, because he has a political dick rammed up his asshole and views EVERYTHING through his ideological lens. Let's fucking REEEEE about gender bullshit on a character who was ALWAYS gender ambiguous, to the point she knocks on a trannies door and when he calls her, "little boy", she says, "Ed's not a little boy...". And this was back in nineteen ninety fucking eight.

There's a million fuckin' things to complain about with this show and to latch on to this Ed shit? When it's one of the least offensive things about the show?

Yeah, you're a retard. I was complaining about them trying to make Ed act exactly like the anime. The they/them stuff was a single line that I just mentioned because its funny. I mean, is your argument now that calling a person THEY if they are androgynous is good and logical? (Seriously, go ahead and answer that you buffoon)

But the bulk of my post, the whole paragraph I made fun of, was about the acting/direction choices of the character.Don't try to salvage how fucking stupid your push back was with this shit now that you're starting to realize how retarded it was for you to try and defend the direction they took with the character by doing a 1:1 translation. The idea that anyone could watch that clip and be like "Well, durr--that's how they/them acted in the anime, so derp, its okay!"

What's funny though is you thought the they/them thing was a less retarded hill to die on than your original argument that 'derp, dats how Ed acted in the show though!"...lol. Its not.

No, my argument is that complaining about that in a character like fucking Radical Edward is pretty fucking comical and shows how much ideological bullshit you absorb each and every day. I mean, Faye looks/acts NOTHING like the Faye from the anime, but let's go ahead and whine about "current year" gender politics on a character who was always ambiguous. It's like complaining that Faye wears red in the show when she mostly wore yellow in the anime. It's just a stupid fucking thing to bitch about in a show that is just a silly attempt at translating anime to live-action.

I bet you're a real fucking BLAST at parties, bro. A real lady magnet.

Faye was literally part of the reason I was pointing it out...because they didn't feel the need to adhere to 1:1 translations for any other character except the character that would translate the LEAST well.

And you keep bringing up the gender thing...My post was about the acting. Why are you constantly trying to push the gender thing? As said, I mentioned they/them because it sounds stupid to say, like calling someone THEY literally sounds dumb and makes writing dialogue that doesn't sound stilted or confusing impossible (See Billions for how awful it sounds to use). I didn't write a SINGLE line about gender politics. Not a single one...that's all been you seeing something that is not there because your original argument was so retarded you want to make this about gender politics...for some weird reason.
