Call me a cynic, but if this game is even remotely the "RPG" experience some people are hoping I'll be shocked. I suspect this will be a massive open world combat sim with very light world building/story stuff. My expectation is the "story" just exists to push you around the world so you can continue to engage with the combat. Watching youtube, there seems to be this sentiment after the last official video that you'll be able to base build, do a ton of meaningful side activities, etc - aka this is fantasy RDR2, or akin to the witcher 3 or something, when to me this looks much more like a Nioh 3. A pure action combat game. Guess we'll see, I'm interested either way.
Mostly agree. I think it will just be a bigger BDO with a focus on combat, a more coherent Story and with all its various lifeskill (aside from Sailing). I hope the exploration side of CD will be worthwhile, I want to be running around and find some hidden away "dungeon like" area, kinda like the cave dungeons in Elden Ring. If it manages to scratch my itch for Character Progression and Exploration, I'll be happy.

I'd prefer that honestly, I don't care about story in these games really (RDR1 probably did story the best for these types of games, so I appreciate it if they do it well). I want a huge immersive world with tons of stuff to do like Skyrim, New Vegas, Elden Ring, RDR, Terraria, Stardew Valley, etc.

Yeah story is somewhat secondary for this type of game versus fun combat and large detailed world. I spent hundreds of hours on Skyrim, Terraria and Elden Ring and none of these have a good story(can argue Elden Ring but it's the usual Souls "the story is in the description of the items" shit which I can't be assed to bother with). Considering their track record, I'd expect an absolute dogshit story, especially since they're mixing in "aliens" or whatever the ancient tech floating islands bullshit is, 100% going to go from re-assembling your clan to fighting some otherworld entity that threatens the world, and that's about it. Side stories might actually be more interesting than the main.

Ultimately while I'm quite excited about this I'm also likely not buying it at release anyway, so I'll see what ppl say about the game.

I could care less if they try to sell pixels for a one player game. If there are people out there that actually care how they look to themselves enough to pay for it, more money to the company. This in turn leads to more products being made. The only time I care if company's sell pixels is if the pixels give a distinct advantage in a multi-player game. I am not sure why a person would care how their character looked when nobody else sees it, but I am sure those people exist. Let the company make some money.

I am waiting on reviews from you guys before I buy this game. I want to see how truly in depth the game play really is. If I want a fight sim, there are many many games that fulfill that role better. I want story and exploration, with character power development, that allows me to cheese my way through if I put the time into the game. I am not one of those players that can play the game with my character being naked with a dagger, because my fight skills are so awesome. I need a game that recognizes that some players just suck at timed button mashing.

The game has 5 "zones", but there will be no monster scaling. There will be areas that have higher lvl enemies that you will need to gear up for. From what I've seen being alluded too, your Character power will come from your Gear and Skill unlocks (more skills, more options). So yep, you can spend the time to out gear encounters.

In terms of Combat though...I think its going to be complex. All inputs on a controller will be used, by themselves, in combination and contextually.

Not a true in depth DF review, but PA did send the guys some footage and info about the system it was taken on and the settings used, pretty impressive. Footage is 4K Native on last gen AMD hardware:

Eh seems pretty standard stuff for open world games? It's a game that's been in the works for a very long time so even when they likely scrapped stuff for direction changes, they still had code and assets already made they could reuse later to re-add specific things, and then you have to remember this is by the guys who made Black Desert Online, which already has a ton of that stuff rolled in, BDO isn't one of these mmos that just adds dungeons and raids, a very large part of BDO content is non combat fluff stuff,

You can build your boat then sail with it, there's naval combat and goods bartering between various islands, you can fish and cook and make potions obviously but you can also ride and race horses, or you can buy a wagon, link your horses to it then travel around to buy goods and resell them in another region(granted this was removed a couple years back cause they wanted to rework it), there's a reputation system with a lore-based minigame and a lot of "knowledge" to collect. You can own houses in any of the cities, which you can use to do your crafting and decorate but also to have NPCs craft things for you and if you're more into the decoration you can buy large-scale manors. There's farming and you can hire NPCs to do your farming for you or build your farm plot yourself with the location and weather affecting the crops you can grow efficiently. And speaking of NPCs you can also hire them to collect goods from specific nodes in the world and then move them around and this is done by connecting the nodes on the map, by linking the elven forest to the main city you can produce wood then move it to the city over time, and you can then sell it there. Or you can ship it to the port city, load up your boat and sell it across the sea for an even bigger profit.

BDO is rife with subsystems and stuff to do that's not combat related, the "Life" classes have their own leveling and gearing systems and even outside of that there's a bunch of various systems. So adding all that shit to this game is likely not as hard.

Yeah, PA have mostly kept BDO on life support while they pour their entire fucking budget into this thing. The marketing for this is going to be nuts and they've invested a fuckload already.

I expect a ton of broken promises, a game that seems deep/massive but is actually pretty shallow/empty, and a lot of overpromising/underdelivering. I hope it at least does well enough to recoup its budget, because if PA ends up taking a big loss on this game, I wouldn't be surprised if they fold/mass layoff.

This is sink or swim for PA. I'd like to know what led them down this far to put all of their eggs into a singe-player basket.

It must be the live service aspect.

Sunk cost is a lot more likely. It was originally a 2nd MMO project, then they cancelled that but decided to change it into single player to get some money out of it, but then kept spending more and more money into it and not having a finished product and they had no way back other than just write it off as pure loss which would be pretty bad. Ultimately it looks like they'll make some money back out of it since overall the hype I've seen for the game is pretty good so even if it ends up being pretty shallow, it should still sell decently enough, and if they managed to even get something semi decent they might actually sell a lot of boxes.

Live service doesn't particularly seems to be built in so far, they might have some DLCs getting worked on but since they're not releasing with microtransactions and shit it doesn't seem to be the angle.

That is one of the reasons I want to try it. The game looks Immersive. Those are my favorite kind of games. It was why I enjoyed New World despite its system and still consider Cyberpunk 2077 to be the best game made to this point. My one concern is my lack of having a descent capability to push buttons, at the right moment, really fast, for combat.

It is also why my eye is focused on GTA6...

The game should be fine. A slightly better version of BDO without the p2w aspect and a "complete" game. Will it compare well to other massive single player games like RDR2 / Witcher 3 etc.? Probably not, especially in terms of Story. I think it'll be much more similar to a standard Ubisoft game. If you've enjoyed games like Odyssey or Valhalla, I imagine you'll be fine with this game. Just don't believe all the stupid bullshit clickbaity youtube videos.

If anything, the game looks pretty fucking fantastic graphically.
Really? I'll agree the environments have looked good, but everything else is pretty ass. Trying to be a bit too realistic without the artistic chops to use lighting well. I know the video I'll post here is unfair given the difference in resources these companies have, but the difference in presentation is obvious:

Yet, just like in BDO, there will be sections of the game that will just look amazing.

Difference in presentation is obvious? Other than 1 of those shots in dawn/dusk and the other is midday... what exactly do you think that's proving? Both look very good

Seriouosly. Zindan Zindan come on you know better than that - since Crimson Desert has a day / night cycle as well and it is obvious they are taken in two different cycles of that. How on earth can you gauge lighting ability?

I fully expect the story to be the weakest part of the game and at best be passable, but other than that I think the rest of the game will be pretty awesome.

I could be wrong, but we'll know soon enough since the review embargo lifts on the 4th I believe, which shows some confidence on PA for lifting it a full 2 weeks before release.
