Variety is fucking with you. Gunn's comment "Yes, it's about politics" is in reference to a scene (that we've seen in the trailer) where Superman and Lois debate whether he should have stopped a war.

The original interviewer was also trying to make everything about politics to fish for an out-of-context soundbite (look at that headline--basically has nothing to do with the interview), but imo Gunn didn't take the bait. Worth a read if you want to hear his thoughts, but nothing that you couldn't figure out from the trailer:
