9800X3D vs 9900/9950 X/X3D

I'm not a big fan of the 12 core models. I prefer to go with the 8 core (single CCD) X3D chip for gaming. This eliminates any core parking/scheduling issues where the game may end up running on the non-X3D part of the CPU. I know AMD and MS have gotten better at making sure that doesn't happen, so perhaps it is not as big an issue was it previously was.

Or go with the full 16 core model if you need the threads. 9950X3D can still have the scheduling issues (as can all 12 and 16 dual-CCD models) though.

back in the 2000 i had a corrupted bios, the fix was to boot into another pc i had (my wife and i played eq and we both multipc), and while in the bios screen, remove the bios chip, and put in the corrupted one and overwrite the bios.

it didn't give a new bios to the chip, but rather once it was transplanted it just saw it as the wrong bios (instead of corrupted) and i was then able to reflash it.

i always buy the mb that had dual bios, even tho i haven't used a dual flash since that one time. (it's like having a spare tire and changing it on the road, and thinking i'm never driving w/o one in the trunk ever, fuck these weird spray foam tire fix)

Most modern motherboards (at least the ones I own) with the AM5 platform can flash the BIOS when it fails, or when you have trouble with CPU compatibility. On Gigabyte it's called Q-Flash Plus: You download the BIOS and put it on a FAT32 USB Stick as "gigabyte.bin", plug it in and press the button.

You don't need a CPU, graphics card or RAM. Push button, receive BIOS.

Increasingly high price premiums and shady customer service where they are denying warranty repairs and trying to charge instead. They've also had some manufacturing issues 4 years ago (they reversed the direction of a polarized capacitor) on one high-end mobo (Z690 Hero) that they lied about until the youtube tech media final pressured them.

They've taken some heat for their mobos over-volting CPUs to juice benchmarks, but all brands do that. When Intel Core Duo was king Asus was enable MCE by default for the same reason. This was more public with the SoC voltages on AMD CPUs, especially X3Ds, but that was more a AMD issue allowing mobos to set it too high and again, all brands did it too. Asrock still seems to be having problems with X3D CPUs dying (current theory is bad BIOS chips corrupting things - they were fine, then swtich supplliers and had issues, and now switched back), but the other brands have it resolved.

On the price side, they've introduced the Astral line above their previous top end (Strix), but besides the high MSRP the quality is fine. They've also introcuded some new low cost lines, so this lets them raise previously low/mid lines up the stack (TUF line was mid tier, now it's high tier by how Asus defines it).

I'm not gaming on this PC, I have another for that. The main application that I want to run as best as possible is the Thinkorswim trading platform. It's a Java-based application and its performance is already God awful. From my understanding, single core performance is all that matters for it which is why I originally was just going to stick with Intel. But I admit it probably makes little difference, as I'm effectively trying to brute force performance onto an already shitty application.

Best single core AMD is the 9950X or 9950X3D. It's also possible to disable a CCD in the BIOS to make it an 8-core so everything stays on the same CCD. I cannot say how it compares to Intel, but I think the difference is going to be a few % between Intel and AMD for single core Java, unless somehow the massive L3 cache of the X3D matters.

This 100%. Last and I do mean THE LAST Asus MB I bought was an upper mid-range board. Whatever they called their 'military grade' stuff at the time. Every other MB with that chipset got a bios update for the round(s) of Intel exploits except mine. I decided then they can fuck right off.

Pretty sure you can do this with MSI boards as well.

We run some machines with 12th gen chips on ASUS boards, some because they were current other because I avoided 13th and 14th and went with a discounted 12. Fortunately the latest one with a GPU quick release button was the attached wire version and not their propriatory BS that would scrape and rip chunks off the card. Poor decisions were made after that era by both design and customer service.

It's hard to recommend intel right now. I built my first AMD system since about 2004 this year so I'm hardly an AMD fanboy. Current intel boards will likely be a dead end, AM5 should get a few more generations and the X3D chips just rock.

well i'm sure you realize your expandability is nil and you won't turboboost to higher sustained speeds/oc b/c your heatsink is limiting you

if i were to work w/ that, i'd suggest you get a aio, the case you chose can accept a 280

if youre going for budget, idcooling is no frills

Sure. I have no issue with AIO vs air cooling. Just looking for performance better than my XSX and legion go, but while maintaining a smaller framework. I’m open to larger but it seems that the cost/size for a bigger case is only about $100 less.

Alright, this is what I'm thinking about going with. Again, this isn't a gaming PC, mostly just a workstation for some software dev tinkering and the aforementioned Thinkorswim trading platform.

Waiting on Prime Day to see if any of this stuff goes on sale. Also, decided on a 9700x instead of 9900x. 9900x seems like an overkill and for single threaded apps and doesn't really offer much benefit for my uses anyway.

If it's a workstation only that will do anything gaming you could probably save some money with a b550 motherboard.
