Here are 2 versions of my build with the items I have purchased, I got the CX600M powersupply already as you can see.

Build with R9 290 = 452 watts
Build with gtx970 = 347 watts

I don't know much about power supplies....am I cutting it to close to max with the R9 build? Or is it fine?

Seeing as I can save $100 - $115 on the vid card I might get that R9

Also, I will be playing 1080p.......maybe 1440p

EDIT - From what I have read, drawing 300-400 would be ideal....so probably stay away from R9 290 with this PS?

I hate this period of flux for monitors. Stuff migrating to 4k and panel tech changes like IGZO, etc.

I REALLY need a new monitor that is best of both worlds. I want 27" or greater, IPS quality panel with the fastest possible response time. Basically, I want this monitor for both gaming and photography Lightroom / Photoshop work. Price isn't really a concern. I just keep reading about x,y,z on the horizon, so I am afraid to pull the trigger on anything.

I sold all my Mac photography crap though, so I currently have no photo quality monitor at all.

Any advice?

Well, in your case I'd get a Korean IPS (Yamakasi Catleap Monitor Club) and a 120hz pcb fromOverlord PCB Set | Overlord Computer. With those 2 (~550$ total) you'll get 27"[email protected]/* <![CDATA[ */!function(t,e,r,n,c,a,p){try{t=document.currentScript||function(){for(t=document.getElementsByTagName('script'),e=t.length;e--;)if(t[e].getAttribute('data-cfhash'))return t[e]}();if(t&&(c=t.previousSibling)){p=t.parentNode;if(a=c.getAttribute('data-cfemail')){for(e='',r='0x'+a.substr(0,2)|0,n=2;a.length-n;n+=2)e+='%'+('0'+('0x'+a.substr(n,2)^r).toString(16)).slice(-2);p.replaceChild(document.createTextNode(decodeURIComponent(e)),c)}p.removeChild(t)}}catch(u){}}()/* ]]> */IPS glossy (no anti-glare) single input (minimal input lag).

I'd like to build 3 new computers (2 gaming machines and one TV-driving media center), should I try to buy on Monday to take advantage of whatever deals exist?

What is the generally preferred setup for a media center? Right now I'm using an old box with a wireless NIC and windows XP (lol). I download movies off iptorrents and play them. It works pretty well but there has to be better options!

I wish Boxee Box didn't sell off to Samsung. I still use mine, but I would kill to have an updated version. It's basically just a media player that connects to your network. I use a NAS to drop all my torrents on and the Boxee will organise, create thumbnails, descriptions, trailer links, etc on its own. All for <$175 years back.

I haven't seen anything as slick since.

An intel NUC with PLEX and gigabit access to your NAS should the job nicely at 0 db and it's about this big?.

edit : why is my little square black ?

GTX970 seems like an easy choice, but it seems like every card has bad reviews for coil whine, does that go away or what?

I got an asus 970 strix and have no coil noise, same with a a friend who got a gigabyte 970 g1. Considering both me and my friend didn't have any problems, I call bullshit on all those posts and conclude there are zero coil noise problems with the gtx 970.

I'm completely clueless with PLEX. How does it generally work? I am guessing I would need to install a copy of Win7 and run within windows?

What are the best options for a remote? I love the Bluetooth remote with the Boxee with a tiny keyboard built into the back.

I am guessing this:
Amazon.com: Intel NUC BOXD54250WYKH1 Intel 4th Gen Intel Core i5-4250U with Intel HD Graphics 5000: Computers Accessories

Plus some RAM and an HD and an OS to make it work?
I use Plex via Chromecast.

Basically you just set up Plex on a PC that is on your home network/wifi. Make sure that PC can access all locations that you have media stored. I have Plex running on my main/gaming PC, and I set it to scrape/search a few different folders on this PC, as well as a couple of network hard drives that are plugged straight into my router(where the majority of my video files are at).

Once that is set up, ANY device that is on your home network/wife can access Plex media, be it PC, laptop, phone, tablet, whatever. I generally access it with phones or tablets and then use those devices to cast the video file to the Chromecast that is on whatever TV I want to watch the video on. I think that's a lot easier than having a Roku/Boxee/whatever with a separate remote. 99.9% of the time that I'm at home my phone is within reach, whereas a random remote probably isn't.

You can buy the full version of Plex and get access to your media anywhere, rather than just at home for the free version, but I don't travel much and I can't watch anything at work, so the free version works fine for me, I just need it in my home.

Chromecast is over Wifi, no? I had issues in the past before my hardwired Boxee connection. I basically torrent 1080p BluRay quality rips with HD-MA and would suffer from buffer stuttering and search (FF / RW) functions due to wifi bandwidth issues. I'd much prefer a hardwired solution that is essentially limitless for max quality rips.

My Boxee is still perfect for what it does, the UI is just a bit dated and it takes ages to boot up, load thumbnails, and perform scrape updates.

I have Plex on a NUC running Ubuntu. It's plugged into my TV and I can use any of our smartphones/tablets/laptops as a remote.

For me, the best part about running Plex is the on-the-fly transcoding to various devices. If I want to watch something in bed while me wife is asleep the server will stream the video straight to my phone. The media library interface is very nice.

If you *ahem* acquire your media from the internets, you can set up Sickbeard and Sabnzbd+ on your Plex server and it will automatically download and catalog your shows as they are released on newsgroups and update Plex accordingly.
