I built my rig in 2011. I run a i5-2500k (stable OC for 2 years at 4.5ghz), 8 gig 1600mhz ram, 128gb ssd, GTX-570 SC.

I want to spend some cash on a new gfx card, maybe $400. Any thoughts? Not sure if going to a 770 is a good idea or should I spend money on something else?

A 770 is going to roughly double your FPS from a 570, its definitely a significant upgrade. That being said though, AMD 7970s are on sale right now for various black friday/syber monday deals and people are getting them fir sub $250 and its roughly equivalent to the 770. Some games the 770 is a tad faster, some the 7970 is a tad faster, but overall they are pretty even. The 7970 is a MUCH better deal right now if you can get ahold of one for well under $300. also the 7970 generally does better at higher resolutions like 2560x1440, while the 770 generally performs a tad better at 1920x1080.

Now, I couldnt tell you where these people are finding these 7970s for sub $250 after rebate, but I've seen people on several different sites make mention of ordering one recently, but that's a hell of a deal if you can actually find that somewhere.

IMO, if you don't want to break the bank, your CPU is still pretty decent. Just get a new mid range GPU. This is from a gaming perspective, anyways. See this article:

AnandTech | Choosing a Gaming CPU October 2013: i7-4960X, i5-4670K, Nehalem and Intel Update

Even if you got a super fast SLI/Crossfire setup, the difference between your CPU and a brand spanking new one is only going to be 5-10% or so:

http://images.anandtech.com/graphs/graph7189/56752.png

Hardly seems worth it to spend $300-400 on a new mobo and CPU for that kind of a bump.
Hmm, cheers for the links. According to that chart the i5-2500 I have gathering dust in the second Pc is slightly better than my i7, here I was thinking it was worse (never used it for games at all, I bought it for work but then when I moved back to the UK I never even unpacked it). I think I'll shop around for a decent (ish) gpu and an ssd then.

Wish I could find one of these 7970s. Though I only really game @ 1900x1200. But 250ish instead of 300+, the latter being for 770s, I would take one. All out of stock atm on newegg. Maybe ill find something good on monday.

I love my corsair ax850. Good psu. You could get away with with 650-750 though.

Just put up an alert on slickdeals or check deal news regularly, if they are not already out of stock you will see a7970 pretty quick, i think i saw some 7970 lower than 250 today in my phone alerts.

I have a 750W PSU with 2 SSDs, 3 standard hard drives, a i5 3570k + H100i water cooler, and a single 660Ti and at max load playing a game I'm around 300W used. You might get to 450W with a second video card. I kinda wish I didn't bother with a 750, it is WAY overkill, but oh well, guess it'll last me through a few different computers

My cousin ordered a 7970 about a week ago from Tigerdirect and it was like $269 with a $40 mail-in rebate, so net cost of $229. Ridiculously good deal. Of course, by the time he tells me about it a week later the deal is long gone. Bastard

AMD acquired ATI in 2006.

Also post a budget and what you'll use the computer for and I can give you a starting point.
Gaming, pure and simple. I don't play any taxing games atm, mostly StarCraft 2 and Hearthstone, some Diablo III etc. Once I get a proper gaming machine I may invest more into Steam since they always have awesome deals concerning new releases and other awesome games. I also want to be able to run any new MMOs that come out, even though we all know EQNext is going to suck donkey ass (we still HAVE to try it, right?).

I can spend anywhere from $1000-1200 probably, but I'm trying to get the most for my money, so if an $800 set-up is more cost efficient I'd go that route. I remember the 1k price range being a very good value for building a gaming PC as you can avoid any bottlenecks basically and there's good value to be had across the board, but this could've changed over the years. I have no idea what's going on in the PC world to be quite frank, with SSDs and 16gigs of RAM and now learning ATI is part of AMD lol. Any help would be great, I'll be going to microcenter on Monday so hopefully I get some good deals.

I can also always add new parts next month or so, say if you think a SLI(is it still called that?) setup is optimal, or only buying 4 or 8 gigs of RAM now and then doubling up, adding in a second HDD, etc. I'm willing to put more into the comp, just not right now (sticking to my budget).

That is not a good deal. That thing is ancient. Kingston has their HyperX drives which came out later, and those are still over 2 years old now.

jesus christ any ram under 60$ is going so fucking fast, should i wait for monday or just buy the next 50$ set of 8gig ram?

cheapest gskill is now around 67$ think waiting till monday might have cost me on a few things.

ty mist, i know nothing about ssds.

also can anyone explain to me why AMD setups are so much cheaper, my friend keeps telling me to go AMd i can get the same build same power, for about 300-400$ less he says, but that does not make sense to me, if AMD was as powerful but cheaper nobody would buy intel.

kudos

How far are we talking, you can get really long hdmi for pretty cheep at amaon, mine is set up with a 25 footer. There are some wireless hd transmitters out there but they are about $200. Not sure about this google play thing.
