Shit's getting cheaper and cheaper. Question is how cheap will it go, and do I spring for a 980Ti to last me the next few years, or go with a GTX 970. Tough decision when on a budget.

If you're going high end, wait a month or two and see what the new cards bring(at the very least, the 980Ti, 980, and 970 should drop even further in price, very soon)

If you're in the market for a midrange ~$200 card, probably might as well buy now, it's not like those are going to drop to $50 or anything that drastic.

I feel the 980Ti is terrible value now, especially with the new generation of cards right around the corner. Only reason to get it is if money is of no concern and you want to game in 2160p with sli. Still think that the MSI GTX 970 is the card to get *now* since it can run everything nicely even in 1440p.

A single 970 cannot run everything "nicely" at 1440p. Even a 980ti dips below 60 on the division/witcher 3 at max settings and 1440p.

I've got first hand experience with this. My 980 Ti at 1440p will noticeably dip in Witcher 3 with max settings.

Yep. I can't even get the division to stay at a stable 60 on ultra with a 980 ti at 1440p.

Nvidia has stopped production on the GM200 core as of this week, which is the core inside the 980 ti. Pretty much means we are going to see Pascal GPUs start rolling out soon, as it takes 3-4 months from production halt to clear out most of the stock of a product.

so yeah should see 980 ti's start dropping in price as they get clearanced out, although probably smarter to see what the pascal equivalent is going to be in price and performance.

I consider myself a fairly tech savvy guy, but never heard of this. I ran across an article today talking about "God Mode", which will open a folder with a ton of buried options that you don't have to go digging / searching for in Windows. Pretty nifty little trick.

Just create a folder on your desktop, then rename the folder to:
Voila! Enjoy.

I'll be the first to parrot the obvious "now is a shit time to buy a gpu pascal is around the corner" line.

Otherwise parts look good, though personally I'd spend another 20$ to get a slightly larger PSU in case you ever decide to SLI down the road (SLI option being relatively likely on a 970 for most folks).

Why the dedicated sound card? Unless you have a specific need for it onboard audio is fine on like 99% of motherboards these days.

My only comments are just things you should maybe think about. First, a 500GB SSD is one of those things I'll never regret. You can find an 850 EVO for around $120 pretty regularly (just check Slickdeals). Kind of the same deal with a regular HHD; you should be able to find a 2-4GB for not much more than that. I don't know if you need the space, but something to consider.

And yeah, I agree about the sound card. Dedicated sound cards have been pretty much unnecessary since the early 2000's. Onboard works just fine unless you're Brahma.

Would using a Vizio P50-C1 give any noticiable difference to playing games over a old vizio M42 model? Using a single gtx980?

Thanks

Echoing what others have said: hold off on the gfx card to save an easy 50-100, drop the sound card and get at least a 800w+ psu. The 970s are not going to hold that 330 value much longer.

You don't need a 800W psu for a single vga system. I've had 3 x 7970 (250W cards) on a PC Power&Cooling 750W running at full load for a year (bitcoin shit). Quality >> Quantity, that 650W Seasonic is more than enough for anything you can throw at it.

Saw this today:Nvidia Announces Pascal-Based Tesla P100 GPU With HBM2

The Tesla P100 is in volume production today and will ship "soon." Jen-Hsun Huang said that really means it will show up in the cloud first, and ship via OEMs in Q1 2017.

Of course, as a consumer, you can't have this chip yet. That's no surprise. In the past, Nvidia also first implemented its new architectures and GPUs in scientific super computing before bringing it to the consumer market. Nvidia did not announce when we would be seeing a consumer-oriented Pascal chip.
So whatever Nvidia gives us this year won't likely be based on Pascal.

Anyone familiar at all with building for ultra low budgets? My nephew has 400$ to spend and wants to get in to PC gaming, but I don't even know where to start with that kind of budget. There anyplace to buy Windows that won't be 1/4th of his budget?
