Yea you can step up to an i9 as long as it's a Socket 1151 board, no issue.

I requested a refund from Amazon on the Z390 from ASUS gonna give Gigabyte a try, it's set to be delivered the day I get back. After reading the reviews on Amazon for the Z390-E Gaming I dunno why I picked it. Actually ran into a few issues (i.e. BIOS not saving settings correctly resulting in the boards RGB defaulting to always on every couple of boots.)

Haven't had a desktop in probably a decade, just looking into getting one. Threw this together with minimal research. Somebody tell me if I've done anything egregious here or if I can make some improvements without inflating cost much. Not looking for anything crazy, just solid performance.

pls do research for me, I'm lazy

Looks good to me, it's overkill for 1080 unless you insist on running everything at 120/144 fps. 2070 is a great card. Use displayport cable (not hdmi) or the freesync won't work.

That's a curved monitor btw, some people love it, some hate it. I had it on my shortlist recently but went with an LG 4k in the end.

Didn't realized it was curved, might rethink that. I wanted to go 1440 but I'm just not sure I care enough for the price jump from 1080. I mean I've been playing games on shitty laptop screens for a decade without feeling like I'm missing much. If anyone can suggest a solid 1440 screen for ~$300 I'd probably go for that but I didn't see much in the little searching I did.

Curved is definitely a questionable feature with such a small screen size. You aren't going to find a decent 1440 monitor below $300 (sales aside) but you can definitely get 1080 monitors for cheaper than that one.

Ok then somebody convince me 1440 is worth it. I hate to spend money on good components only not to have the monitor to display the results. If I can't convince myself 1440 is worth it, I might drop the card down to a 2060.

Looking at your monitor/display right now, you'll notice that things like text or edges look obviously pixelated. Games with a lot of foliage/fine edges will look bad no matter the AA setting. Does this bother you at all, or do you think that it would be nice for this to be less of an issue? Then 1440 is worth it. 1080 is fine otherwise. Also, 1440 gives you more room to work with when it comes to programs/browsing, and more UI space in games.

Mind you that 1440 also comes with a performance cost in return for the visuals.

I had the same dilemma and decided I might as well skip 1440 and go straight to 4k. The LG 27UD58-B has been getting rave reviews everywhere. I'm trying to link to amazon but it's not working for some reason, anyway it's $326. It comes in 24inch too if you prefer that.

I have the 27UD59 (which is the 2019 model of the one above, I don't see it on American Amazon atm) and I'm very pleased with it, nice crisp picture, no dead pixels and it'll go up to 75hz whereas most 4k are still 60hz max or they are like $800. The 2070 puts out solid fps at 4k even with my older cpu (I'm still on ivy bridge). One drawback is that the stand doesn't adjust up or down, need a monitor arm if that's important to you.

Hmmm I think you may have made my decision for me here. I can't think of reason not to get this when it's only about $130 more than the 1080s I'm looking at.

This LG can be found for $350 if you have a Microcenter available:

If not, $400 at Amazon.

Monitor is the single most important thing you buy for a computer, it can and should last longer than your computer. I'd spend a larger portion of my budget on it.

Nah, but I'd look at the 34 inch ultrawides, especially if you're willing to buy a 2070. Buy an AMD proc for now, upgrade to Zen 2 and save money there.

Going 4k with a 2070 is going to mean settings compromises just to reach 60fps right out of the gate. Probably medium or high with custom settings. I really don't recommend 4k for anyone that isn't going to the hilt with their build. Some might argue that you can fill it out with a better card down the line, but display tech generations actually matter now and it's not unlikely that you'll want to get a new display then too. 1440p144hz is the current price:eye-candy sweet spot for anything under a 2080/2080ti/1080ti

1080 is garbage tier from 2009, 1440 is the MIN you need just as a basic joe smoe work computer.

can't even view an excel spreadsheet past column S, and you'd be lucky to get row 45

Looking to upgrade to a near-worry free experience for 1440p144hz.

8700k 5.0OC
16gig DDR4
1060 6gig

Which video card would I be looking at? a 2060 or 2070? Anyone think the new 1660 would push 1440p decently? Obviously if budget allows grab the 2070 but if a 2060 can perform then difference can be added towards a display; as a compromise i'd lean more towards doing that. Also anyone able to decide on TN vs IPS in regards to MMO gaming? Now with mass gsync compatibility i'm curious if IPS rules in favour.

I mean my 2080 doesn't get 144 on 1440p for a lot of stuff. It all feels good, but if you're trying for 144 for competitive reasons, I wouldn't plan on it. Dota 2 I'm usually at like 120, PUBG is like 100. I could probably turn down some settings in some of them if I cared enough too
