I have the i7 920 running at 2.67 (1366 socket). Just to cover the other stuff of importance...I have 9 gigs of ram and a GTX 670.
Your hardware seems to be far above average. The only "real" upgrade for you would be a GTX 780 or Titan. A cpu/board/ram swap would be more of a "sidegrade" than anything else at this point. I'd skip a generation (at least).

Of course, your budget is a factor too.

I was assuming the processor is where my biggest upgrade would be at this point but if you think I would still get more out of a better graphics card I have no problem dropping the money there instead.
Honestly, that's still a really solid system.

However, if you absolutely MUST upgrade, here is what you are looking at for graphic card options

Out of the new line of AMD cards, the new 280x is basically on par with the previous 7970(if not a little faster), and the 280x is only $300

Here is how your current 670 compares to a 7970:AnandTech | Bench - GPU13

And here is how the 7970 compares to the new 280x:AnandTech Portal | The Radeon R9 280X Review: Feat. Asus XFX - Meet The Radeon 200 Series

An Nvidia 770 is faster little bit faster than all of those options, but now you're up into the $400-$450 price range, and obviously the new AMD top of the line card, the 290x, blows everything away short of a $1000 Nvidia Titan, but the 290x is expected to be up around $600-700.

I suppose the slight stuttering I get in BF4 beta is bothering me and thinking that I need to upgrade. It is probably just the beta not being optimized instead. I mean I run 50-70 ish CPU usage in BF4 depending on what is on screen so I suppose I do still have some room to play. I just was debating some things around due me liking to be able to play everything on the highest settings and since early on BF4 was giving my system problems (which seem to not exist now). Judging from the comments though I might be able to pawn off my current video card on my friend (who I have been yelling at since he built a new system and has an old video card which is way worse than mine) and buy me an upgrade if I really wanted. Thanks for the information.

I'd highly suggest running Windows 8/8.1 for BF4 if you're not already. That may help with some of the stuttering you are experiencing. I have a slower system than you (660 Ti, 2550k CPU, 8 GB ram), and other than server/punkbuster rubber banding, I do not experience blips/slips in frame rates. I'm running Windows 8.1.

I play LoL, DOTA2 occasionally, CS:GO, WoW, and BF4 currently. I made the switch to 8.1 prior to installing BF4 so I cannot speak for 7 but after seeing some links here on this forum and people running Windows 7 complaining in game, I'm glad I have 8.1 installed. LoL, DOTA2, CS:GO, WoW all run perfectly fine in 8.1 and if you don't like the new start menu thing (I hate it), just installClassic Start Menu. It turns Windows 8/8.1 into Windows 7 on crack.

I'm running BF4 on a mix of mostly High and some Ultra settings and am pleasantly surprised by the frame rates I'm getting in the game. I do crash here and there, but I hear that from a lot of people. I'd chock up some of the quirks to it being in beta, too, obviously.

Here's my current desktop:

i7-950 @ 3.33 GHz
Asus Rampage III Formula mobo
12 GB Corsair DDR3, however Win 7 Home only seems to recognize 8 GB of it for whatever reason
MSI GTX 560ti 2 GB x 2 in SLI

I've been looking for an excuse to upgrade. BF4 beta on Ultra runs silky smooth, which was going to be my litmus test for whether or not I needed to buy new parts in the next few weeks. If I did upgrade I'd probably go for a i5-4670k and a GTX 760 along with whatever solid RAM/mobo combo I could find. Probably go for Asus again since I've had no issues with this one.

Put all your upgrade money into a video card. Your processor and motherboard are prefectly fine. Although I would look into why Windows is only recognizing 8GB of RAM(I assume you have 3 sticks of 4 MB)

I have had this in the past and all the modules checked out just fine under Memtest86+. I ended up finding out I had to tweak some RAM voltages in BIOS to get it working again.

I suppose I will have to look in to windows 8. I have been avoiding it highly due to the start menu even though I have heard of mods to disable it. All I keep hearing though is that under the hood windows 8 is amazing so I might have to actually bite the bullet and do it and just deal with it. Thanks for the advice.

Don't buy anything until late November. Expected Nvidia release and price drop from what I'm hearing around the interwebs.

Install Windows 8 (or 8.1). Go toNinite - Install or Update Multiple Apps at Once. Tick the box for Classic Start Menu. Download. Run. Viola. You have the best Windows OS ever (imo).

Looks solid. My only recommendation would be that if you don't HAVE to buy it all right this second, wait about a month. Black Friday/Cyber Monday sales are insane, you can probably cut 20% off of your total price if you wait a month. For example, I bought all of this a year ago on Cyber Monday(2012) sales:

3570k + ASRock Extreme 4 Mobo = $230
180GB Intel SSD = $89
32 GB(4x8GB) 1833 MHZ G.Skill Ripjaw RAM - $130

Cyber monday sales are nuts. Wait a few more weeks if you can

Yup, speccing it out ahead of time; if there's some worthy price drops I'll climb a step on the GPU.

Definitely keep an eye on video card pricing. With AMD's new releases Nvidia is gonna be doing some nice price cuts, plus releasing new products. Next month or two should be an amazing time to get a 150-250 video card with some great performance.

Going to start building up a gaming rig. My basic requirements are small form factor, nice looking, won't be overclocking or anything. Going with an nvidia 760 since that seems to be the best bang for your buck right now. I have my eyes set on a bitfenix prodigy-m micro ATX case. It's been a while since I last made a rig (over 10 years ago) and I am a bit in the dark as to what to get in regards to power supply, memory, CPU, and hd/ssd. For the most part I just want a capable gaming rig.

The smaller small factor you go, the noisier it will be. I'd rather have a big ass case and complete silence than a 5x5x5" box that screeches like a cat in heat.

For a power supply you can't go wrong with Corsair, Antec, Seasonic, PC P&C and 600-700W are more than enough for anything you might wanna use beside SLI-Crossfire.

For the other components you can take a look at Voyce's list but I'd go with a Asrock motherboard and throw an extra 20$ for the PRO version of the SSD instead of the EVO.

Not always. Besides, the Bitfenix prodigy-m isn't all that small.

I built a small PC for a friend, and it was whisper quiet.

You're right, I talked without checking out the case. Looks like there's enough room in there for a decent tower on the cpu and even an aftermarket cooler for the VGA if you don't plan on using any other expansion slot.
