That fucking magazine (and boot, whichever was first, I think it was boot) I used to so look forward to and it also cost me so damn much money. Internet wasn't a big thing yet so most of my PC news came from it.

EDIT: This was my first build from scratch, I thought I knew enough to build one from scratch but that 1ghz proc was finicky as fuck. I read the 'approved' list and ordered off it. I'd already been hit with 'buy cheap RAM , save $$ (except it only worked half the fucking time) building half a system*. Ordered all the parts directly off the approved list with one exception. I think the approved PSU was a 'something with flower in the name' 300watt PSU. My dumb ass brain thinks - if 300w is approved, 350w is better and it's the same brand as the approved one I'm good.
Go to boot it up, nothing. I say fuck 100,000,000,000 times. Pizza box it, nothing, say fuck some more. Isolate parts. I get lights but no boot. Finally I start calling manufacturers. One that worked was a long distance call on my dime to California (from SC) to the engineer at the PSU place. I have my volt meter and he's walking me through stuff. When I mention it's the new 1ghz CPU he told me I cannot use the 350, gotta use the 300. Return (on my dime) for the 300 and it worked good as new.

If I'm giving you all PTSD I'm sorry!

*By half a system I mean Alienware (and Gateway before them) would let you buy a case/cpu/mobo shipped out the door and I'd piecemeal the other parts cheaper that buying from them.
you want more ptsd, maximumpc lost gordon to cancer just recently, cuz he's asian and if you don't live in china where bridges are made out of tofu and all the women drive, you just end up dying from old age or fucking cancer

Built a new pc today and it's the first time I got everything working and plugged in properly the first time. First time doing that in 30 years. Now it's taking forever to reinstall windows and shit.

windows install should take 10mins, your usb thumb drive is probably really slow

get a fast 3.1 thumb drive for next time
SAMSUNG BAR Plus 3.1 USB Flash Drive, 128GB, 400MB/s, Rugged Metal Casing, Storage Expansion for Photos, Videos, Music, Files, MUF-128BE3/AM, Champagne Silver
(there might be others that are rated at 400mb, idk, but i have these and can confirm super fast)
i have like two of these for win10 and win11 (honestly i don't know why i have 2)

Lol didn't even think about that. The thumb drive i used is probably 10 years old.

I’d do the Gigabyte X870E instead, for $20ish more. It reviewed better than the MSI at that price level. Maybe double check the case, since the newer Corsair Frame 4000D and older Corsair 4000D are actually different.

are you going for an airflow case? one of the best is LIAN LI LANCOOL 216 E-ATX PC Case, Airflow Focus RGB Gaming Computer Case with All-Around Mesh Panels, 2x160mm & 1x140mm PWM Fans Pre-Installed and Innovative Rear PCIe Fan Bracket Chassis (Black)
(yes, for some reason the rgb is 40bucks cheaper than plain, why? idk tariffs? lulz)

100bucks and you get two 160mm fans, it performs 10c cooler thana the 4000d, actually nothing beats the 216

Thanks I'll check out the mobo, to be honest I just went by feature set.

I like this idea but goddamn I'm gonna have to pay the non-rgb tax because that.was my whole plan - minimal.rgb.

The E designation means it uses dual AMD chipsets, which allows for more USB A/C, NVMe drives, etc, but these run through a shared link between the chipset and CPU. The primary GPU and NVMe slot(s) run directly to the CPU on both E and non-E boards. In the case of the MSI Mag, they appear to be using a 3rd party controller instead of dual AMD chipsets for additional USB ports, both Gen 4 and Gen3.x. Presumably this only requires an additional driver download and installation (beyond AMD chipset drivers / Windows updates). Other than that, the next biggest difference is 5Gbps on the MSI vs 2.5Gbs on the Gigabyte. There is also a non-E version of the GB X870 Aorus Elite WiFi.

Regardless, these are mostly minor differences that probably won't matter for a typical CPU + GPU + 1-2 NVMe desktop.

Interesting, did not know that. Thanks for the heads up. I typically run 1 nvme and 1 GPU,.so not super worried. The MSI board is probably using a pcie switch so I'm glad you mentioned that. Deal enough with those pieces of shit at work I'll avoid it.

I feel like the 9800X3D is overkill for the 9070XT. You'll be GPU throttled looooooong before you're CPU throttled. But I guess it does future proof you a little bit, if the price difference is worth it for you.

Shamelessly stolen from Noodle's list, and some of the recent comments, here is my list. Note that I've already bought the GPU for $200 less.

And as Kirun just commented about the processor, I'm fine with paying a little more for a higher end processor too.

Anyone see anything wrong or stupid?

Meh maybe, I wanted a 3d processor and the 9800x3d is kind of the king right now. I only build every 5 or so years so trying to stretch this. I'll upgrade the GPU long before I build a new machine.

If you want an x3d then its fine, especially if the cost difference with the 7800x3d doesnt mean much.

Considering the 5090s now start at $2000 for an FE - does anyone forsee prices dropping on the high end at any time in general? Now that i think about it, have Nvidia card prices ever gone down?
