I was just doing some reading on the 4670K that you linked above. How do you feel about MSI motherboards? I'm looking at picking up the 4670K and upgrading my current machine (Dual 7750 video cards are already waiting that I inherited) so I really only need to pick up a mobo/cpu/memory, as my PSU and everything else is already in place.

I'm looking to be as budget friendly as possible. There's an article on Tom's Hardware that says if you aren't looking to OC (I'm really not) - that it may be worth going with the i5-3350P. Are there thoughts on what I'd really gain by going with the 4670K over this? The cheaper 3350P seems to have really fantastic reviews on places like NewEgg, and if it was suggested on Tom's, then it can't be TOO bad? Would I be shooting myself in the foot if I wanted to keep the rig running for a few years? (It's been about 5-6 years since I built a machine from scratch)

I'm hoping to find components locally at somewhere like Fry's. I may pay a $10 premium over online, but I'd be able to build it this weekend if I decided to head out from work a little early and pick up parts.

Nahh, that proc is fine. But if that was my choice I would still opt for the one I posted, because you will get more longevity out of it and i5-4670K processor includes AVX2 and FMA3 instructions, that were introduced recently. Even though these extensions are not extensively supported by applications yet, their support should improve in future programs.

Plus the means to OC will give your proc more life, when you can eek out an extra 1GHZ out of it. And honestly its not that big of deal to OC anymore like it was in the past. Some Mo-Bos like the MSI have a OC genie button on it or in the bios which automatically OCs for you. The others are just as easy. And that cooler I linked is more than enough to handle the OC.

Think of it this way. The mo-bo and Proc are like the heart of your system, so get the best you can. Because while you can pretty much upgrade all the other shit, no one wants to fuck with upgrading a mo-bo and proc. Might as well just get all new at that point.

As to motherboards, I would stay away from Gigabyte. They do some shady shit with their power supply and distribution. Or they have in the past. But yeah, Asus, MSI, As Rock are all solid. I have an As Rock in one of my builds and an MSI in my older i5 2500K builds I did a while back. Both are solid boards.

Oh and definitely get yourself a SSD with a fresh win7 or 8 install, its like night and day difference in performance. Even if you have to get a smaller 100GB one.

I took your advice on picking up the 4670K. It'll last me in the long run, so I should be good there. I've got it up and running after a few hours of cleaning out my old case and throwing my new components in there. It was nice to have the time to rebuild and throw my OS on my spare SSD that I had lying around. I found the MSI Z87-G45 Gaming mobo and 16GB of memory. Thankfully my PSU was new-ish, so I can replace that in the next 4-6 months.

How long should I allow the thermal paste to set before thinking about overclocking? I picked up a fairly well reviewed CoolerMaster CPU fan. With all the other active cooling in the case, it seems safe.

YOu can OC right away. Go for it. Push that sucker to at least 4.2Ghz without even breaking a sweat. Oh and gratz on your new build bro.

Any recommendations on best sub $250ish Nvidia video card? Have a 460 right now but thinking about upgrading before Landmark release.

Depends which SSD. The Kingston HyperX SSDs are solid middle of the road competitors, and surprisingly durable. The Kingston SSDNow drives are old and shitty.

Every one and their moms are making these things now. Im sure prices will continue to drop on them. Besides I really see no need for more than 100GB anyways unless youre like a photog or some film editor or some shit. For the general public having your os and a few programs on it is enough, and use platters for storage.

You don't want your SSD totally full though. You get better performance if it's about half full instead of packed.

Right now I have 40 gig empty on a 120 gig ssd. And that's only because my kid installed some shitty f2p shooter on it lol. usually it hovers at around 50%

There just isn't a need to install anything other than the OS for the average user is what im saying.

I'm still in the market for a new monitor and looking for recommendations... I know I should want a Korean monitor, and everyone will recommend one, but I'm looking to get something at 23 or 24 inches and spend less than $200, so Korean is both too big and out of my price range. I would eventually want to get two monitors, and two 27" would be way too much, so that's part of the reason.

Right now I am still using an old square 19" Dell monitor from like 10 years ago. The only good thing about it is it has a DVI port...

I will say I hate that "Ram that looks like a pack of sharks swimming". That head spreader/fin shit is so stupid and pointless, it just looks cool. If it was needed, all ram would have it.

Just get the newer gen i5 4670k instead of the 3570k, they're both the same price anyways ($220ish), might as well get the newer one.
