So out of my RL buddies who have played Destiny, not a single one knew that there was a Paul McCartney song written for this game. One thought I was making a joke when I mentioned it. I told him to watch the credits (which you can easily miss on the Director) and he was stunned.
I've only earned 1 strange coin ever...first I miss out on Suros and now I miss out on IceBreaker. Once I actually figure out how to get a bunch of coins, I bet Xur is going to sell total crap every week!

Do the weekly strikes, they net you a lot. I got 9 for lvl 28 weekly and I think 6 for the Nightfall. That's only because baby Jesus hates me and never gives me exotics for Nightfall.

Make 3 characters, get them to 26+, do the 28 weekly heroic on each = 27 coins a week. Pretty much all there is to it. You occasionally get them from engrams and daily PE mails too, but not at any sort of a drop rate that you can count on.
If getting three different classes to 26+ sounds like a pain in the ass (it is) then just make all of them the same class.

you can also swap weapons around between characters by banking them, so when you get a good weapon leveled up (ice breaker especially) just bank it and grab on your alt to use it for harder stuff like weekly, nightfall, etc.
but basically coins = weekly strikes, tiger/etc strikes (small chance), engrams public events, planet patrol quests, and PVP rewards. so the more you play the more you'll get. Everything except the weekly strike (9 max) is a chance not a guarantee, but over time they will slowly come.
The game is VASTLY different in reward structures between level 25 and level 19. If you are under 20 you aren't getting shit. At 20 you get crazy stuff for doing the stupidest shit, doing the exact same shit at any level lower than 20 will get you just crappy greens. I'd also suggest funneling ALL your engrams to one character since every level of cryptarch you get a package with 2-3 more engrams (blue or purple, usually blue)

Hrmm weird loot code, 2 Timur's Lash in back to back crucible games, one to me and another to some other dude in game after. Seems everyone gets the exotic bounties at the same time as well.
Thanks for the tips guys. I just don't have the playtime to make 2 alts (just have my one 23 Sunslinger), and I haven't found a good enough random group to complete a weekly heroic yet. I've been soloing the daily heroics, barely, and the strike playlist I've tried at 24 for the best rewards but my random group for that never works out either (got all the way to Phogoth last night and was using the rocks for cover, but my team was running around dying and training wizards into my area and we wiped after I had single-handedly gotten Phogoth down to about 40% grr).
Just hit cryptarch level 3 and one of the blue engrams in the package was a coin, so I'm up to 2!

Should i buy Ice Breaker even if i have a decent Sniper Legendary already? I have "The Supremacy" aka. Queen Sniper with Solar damage and exploding mod which i kinda figured as Ice Breaker light. I am playing casually at level 27 and don't really have a crew to raid with, so i was kinda saving up my sparse coins (up to 23 now) for a Exotic Primary or Armor for my Titan. And there's another thing: A voice inside of me keeps telling me i would kind if cheat myself if i buy the best gear simply from a merchant. I mean, isn't it kind of lame that Xur shows up every week and sells the best shit in game for some lame currency? There is no sense of achievement! I guess it's something to look forward to those players whom the RNG gods aren't pleased with in the first place.

Holy hell is ice breaker a game changer. Especially going from a rare sniper to exotic. I felt like I was cheating when I was one shoting all the mobs in the daily lvl 28 mission.

Xur is just another symptom of the game's fundamentally broken loot system. Without him, the only exotics I'd have would be the bounty ones (which range from "complete shit" to "still worse than a legendary"), a Hard Light (decent AR but not really useful in any difficult content), and an Apotheosis Veil (pure trash).
And yes you should absolutely buy Ice Breaker. Once you have it, you won't even care about primary weapon exotics anymore, not to mention that those are all a waste anyway once you start raiding and pick up Vision of Confluence and/or Atheon's Epilogue. Armor is nice, but you can get a piece of that with a little luck by decoding an engram from Xur. That's all motes are good for anyway. Or once you're 26+ and have an Ice Breaker you can easily solo the weekly 28 and Nightfall and maybe get an exotic that way.
Eh, no, that's not all of it. It's also the longest range sniper by a large margin, and it has the highest impact of any that can be upgraded to 300 attack. Soloing the Nightfall is significantly harder if you just use IB to generate ammo for other guns. Being able to shoot things from far outside their detection range and still do max damage is huge. I did my third NF clear of the week last night solo and didn't even take a single point of damage until I got to the Archon area.

Man this game needs a fucking lfg system. Trying to do the 26 weekly heroic with an empty friends list is a nightmare. Especially when psn is acting up.
