Ladders have already been mined from the expansion strings, this removal removes the barrier from them being implemented without players flipping their shit. This guarantees an expansion purchase from me now, the game itself was fun as fuck but the loot issue killed it.

Also gives a good idea when they plan tro release the expansion. 6 months out isn't too bad.

So I bought the game at launch and played a few weeks , quickly couldn't stand the AH system for a Diablo game.

Is it now patched/changed enough to start anew and get loot throughout without touching the AH (as I'd like to play through it at some point)?

Or still need to wait till it shuts down and whatever they patch at the time with it ?

The game is much better than the first couple months it was around... it's worth it to check it out if you haven't played since the first few weeks post release.

The AH still exists and its still much easier to buy gear to succeed.

Just wait for now, loot 2.0 isn't in yet, but from what I understand it is in on the console port and its pretty damn good.

This is absolutely amazing news, it basically means they are going to give people good loot while playing and not have to think twice that they are giving away too much because the auction house will be flooded. Bravo.

When we initially designed and implemented the auction houses, the driving goal was to provide a convenient and secure system for trades. But as we've mentioned on different occasions, it became increasingly clear that despite the benefits of the AH system and the fact that many players around the world use it, it ultimately undermines Diablo's core game play: kill monsters to get cool loot. With that in mind, we want to let everyone know that we've decided to remove the gold and real-money auction house system from Diablo III.

We feel that this move along with the Loot 2.0 system being developed concurrently with Reaper of SoulsT will result in a much more rewarding game experience for our players.
We're working out the details of how the auction house system will be shut down, but we wanted to share the news as soon as we made the decision in order to give everyone as much advance notice as possible. Please note that the shutdown will occur on March 18, 2014. We will keep everyone informed as we work through this process.

Josh Mosqueira and I wanted to provide everyone with a little more information behind this decision, so please have a look at the video, and stay tuned to this site for further updates in the months ahead.
RIP Auction Houses. Thank fucking GOD.

I'm surprised they're going to remove it, personally. IMO the AH was never a problem, and served good purposes in helping facilitate trading and helping prevent scamming. The problem has always been awful end-game itemization, so I am surprised they're not going to try to keep the AH in place while making their new loot redesign work with it (Via bind on character/account items). Make no mistake, if loot 2.0 doesn't deliver then the game will be just as shitty, with or without an auction house.

I hope they implement something in its place like a "Trading Post", where rather than having to go on forums, people can post items in game that they're wanting to trade and/or sell and they can also list what they'd be willing to trade/sell it for.

Great news. Maybe someone at Blizzard sat back and thought that the way D2 did things was actually a good idea since people STILL play it.

If console is any indication, I think loot 2.0 will deliver.

Wow, never expected this to actually happen. If the loot is really good in 2.0 I'll give this a shot again. Better late than never I guess, but the whole experience in the very beginning sucked a bag of dicks when the issues all became very noticeable.
