cliffs from the private panels

core gameplay

- No towns or city hubs
- set 100 years after D4 and 7 years into the fall of Sanctuary
- caravan traveling style existence for player
- story emphasis on desolate isolated experience
- MMO multiplayer aspects removed from gameplay
- caters to solo gameplay
- more heroes and classes than in Diablo franchise history
- demon hunter and monk confirmed legacy classes
- total classes will be between 10-20 classes

itemization

- D2 itemization is a stated design goal
- uninspired currently, but could improve with community feedback
- affixes are very basic
- affixes are similar to D4 at the moment
- lack of stat breakpoints or any D2 gear planning
- no comparison to D1/D2 itemization in the current design
- D3 had 36 pieces of gear upgraded in 2 hours, D4 had 56 pieces of gear upgraded in 2 hours, D5 is on track to continue this trend
- tetris inventory management is back

combat

- D3 combat is the stated goal
- developers said D3 is the pinnacle of ARPG combat
- very fast paced
- D1/D2 strategy using geometry/doors/map is not in the game
- no collision system

fundamental design

- Blizzard wants community-driven design for D5
- creator feedback development process
- no "Vision(tm)"
- same engine as D4 is confirmed, with slight upgrades
- fork of D4 engine
- D5 started as an expansion to add Diablo to D4
- D4 final expansion was spun off into it's own game
- direction of D5 was deemed too much of a paradigm shift story-wise/design-wise to add to D4 as an expansion
- D4 2.0 fair comparison at present
If they can do D3 combat with D2 skill point system then that'd be cool.

"weaponized autism" and "parachuting" seem at odds with each other. If the former was true, wouldn't I be much more vociferous and persistent?

People are more than welcome to join the PoE thread and discuss the game's flaws. I play a lot of the game but I would say I'm one of the game's biggest critics within the confines of that thread. I'm certainly not a fanboy, especially within the context of PoE2. I haven't given GGG any money since 2023 because I cannot be certain it won't go to PoE2.

All of those are fair points, I agree with pretty much all of them, but I'm not sure why they're relevant. My decision to not play D4 nor give Blizzard any more money since....I think the first month of WoW Classic?...has nothing to do with PoE. Let me put it this way: D4 was fiscally the correct choice while being regressive and damaging to the genre and gaming as a whole. D5 and their whole "idk, you tell us what to make" only reaffirms that.
D4 base was bad and I guess regressive. D4 current case is not, in my mind, regressive. It’s a darker and more fleshed out D3 combat with reasonable depth for any “class locked” skill game, imo. But I didn’t pay for d4 until the $70 pack that included base game and both expansions. Corrected for inflation, that’s a pretty damn good price. I think their MtX are amazing looking but also extremely predatory. Similar to PoE. I’d have to add up again the “must buy” tabs and shit to make a decision on $70 vs PoE costs. Buti tossed $99 at the LE kickstarter and I wished I had that money back to spend on D4 MTX if that tells you what I thought of the final product.

I guess my point is that Poe has been equally bad for the genre in many respects. They have depth. Yes. But they have sacrificed the non-streamer player to chase streamer clout. While they claim to have…can’t think of the word…but I’ll say “fair” MTX, the fiscal reality is they’re just like blizzard and gaming the whales.

I disagree it’s rat meat in D4. It’s a cheap burger. I think the current game director has done about as good as he can given the bullshit he got handed and the political climate of his employer.

Relieved the MMO open world group game was axed. That was one of D4's biggest mistakes at launch. Pseudo-MMO was better done in Diablo Immortal, and somehow D4 failed to have the same basic features a mobile game had. It was so half-ass tacked on feature.

Their head seems in the right place overall. Biggest concerns from Diablo experts is that nothing shown so far indicates they can achieve their stated itemization goal. But at least inventory management is back.

And I agree with the developers that D3 combat is an improvement on D4.

D3 being the design goal is fine by me.

The overwhelming amount of classes will at least be interesting, along with the solo journey narrative being "the most heroes in any Diablo game to date". It will be interesting to see what narrative they have to include all of that. Claiming the biggest amount of heroes in franchise history while set during a desolate journey is quite a boast.

The regression is that it took 3 years, $80 base game and 2 full $60 expansions to get back to D3.5. A sign that they want to create a good game first is continuing that path on D4. Instead, pay again for a new set of unforced errors. The discussion of value gotten out of a purchase should be separate from the business decisions that led to that decision. For example, I get a ton of value out of the currency tab in PoE, but it is fair criticism that the game labels itself as f2p.

LE is whole other discussion. But, I agree overall that it's been quite disappointing.

I'm not sure what you mean by chasing streamer clout. I think any game, even single player(ARPGs these days are essentially single player) games, are DoA if they don't work with streamers to some degree. I do think PoE2 has garnered far more attention and clout than it deserves and that there is some amount of popular because it's popular feedback loop going on.

It seems like they wanted a do-over with the D4 static world map. I'm sure they also saw the visuals from PoE2 and wanted to make D5 on par with them. But I'm also sure they'll still fuck up the end game somehow.

Fuck that. Until the computer industry unfucks itself, continuing to push graphical fidelity is harmful to a game's bottom line. PoE2 is probably going to push past 200GB with 1.0 because of how ridiculous their shaders are.

I wouldn't be surprised to see games advertising settings that let them run on more potatoes. Or, more realistically, runs on GeForce Now.

I think this is a bit alarmist. First, it’s 2029. That will be about 6 years after d4. It’s gonna slip, but I distinctly remember blizzard got raked for taking a decade or so for d3. So which is it on that front?

I already said I give some grace to the guy in charge. The big changes were with the first expansion which is when he really got to fix the bullshit left behind by the original directors. The second expansion was by and large just a tweak of that.

I think others have noted and I’ve seen elsewhere that the D4 engine is a problem.

All they need to do is steal in some version PoE1’s mapping system. LE tried but they had dumb objectives and piss poor mob density.

I guess I’m not seeing the problem with the $80 and. 3 years. I spent 30 or 35 on poe2 beta and it was like 1/4 the game and was a fucking mess. Now supposedly that’s F2P sure. But my guess is that in total sum, both customer bases probably end up out the same overall amount. We’ll never know.

I don’t actually know what people expected? Blizzard shifted toward easy to learn and hard to master. And that mindset gives you d4 imo. Maybe LE if you have less money and talent. I think in general people hate blizzard now. I do too, but I can recognize they put out something I enjoy. Just like apparently half the board feels about WoW Forever too.

I actually think the best thing they could do is keep rifts then instead of an open world, do something like an invasion gate where you open a gate to a part of the world that you’re fighting back on Diablo’s hold. Give you a mat that lets you modify that gate like a Poe map. And have special gate keys for bosses. Put that in a hideout with timed greater rifts. And maybe put in some multiplayer dungeons if that was a hit. Call it good. Focus on gameplay.

They'll keep doing that crap with game size until others smart devs use already well know tools to axe gamesize. Some have already done it and with great results.
For now, it’s still too uncommon, so they’re not concerned.

D5 Needs D3 graphics and combat. Game is so smooth compared to shit D4. Slightly up paced version of D2 with D3 feel... Here's my $60.

Bonus point for attractive character models...

Depends on what people mean by d3 graphics. I like the dark style d4 and visually way closer to what you might expect of a d2 inspired game.

I unfortunately play a lot of d4. My wife loves it and I just want to play somthing with her.

But like last season. 4 days into the season I was paragon 175 with 3 mythics and all the aeasonal levels were done. I was like uhhh now what lol

It just feels so hollow and empty and unfulfilling.

The item hunt is almost nonexsistant.

Yeah, D3 was shit on hard and rightfully so because it looked like a WoW ARPG with its carebear level graphics. They need it to run smooth like D3 but not look like D3.
