SS hasn't made a good movie in 20 years. This won't break trend.
I went and looked because I was like, man Spielberg makes good movies, right??

Last one I've even seen was Catch Me If You Can and that was 24 (!!) years ago.

I'm a sucker for UFO movies so I'll probably see this but it looks weird and I'll probably regret it.

Last I've seen of his (that he directed at least) were Bridge of Spies (2015) and Lincoln (2012). Both were good but both were also historical dramas so not sure if that's a good barometer.

My guess on plot: Aliens revealed themselves in the past but the governments sabotaged / hid this from the planet because it would have resulted in a loss of power or control. Or maybe the aliens realized humans weren’t ready and peaced out for a bit. So aliens are patient and decide to do some long game thing that will reveal them when humans are more receptive

It’s definitely going to be framed as a human greed or lust for power holding civilization back sort of thing

It looks interesting enough for me to stream. It is Steven Spielberg so it will at least be watchable.

Trailers for this were horrendous, but my buddy saw this at a critic screening. He LOVED it. I guess Spielberg + Aliens = always entertaining. Im goin this weekend. Probably avoid professional reviews, the third act was completely hidden on purpose in marketing and I guess this isnt a movie you want spoiled.

Most of the reviews I've seen are as expected - it's Bridge of Spies-era Spielberg combining Close Encounters with Minority Report.

Which is definitely better than another Ready Player One or Crystal Skull, but that's not necessarily causing me to race to the theater.

hated his last few movies, i'll wait for FOH reviews but I do feel in the mood for a theatrical movie and skipped everything else so far this year except Ryan Gosling in space

I feel like a chance was missed here.

So,

  • 1st Kind: Simply sighting a UFO.
  • 2nd Kind: Observing a UFO that leaves physical evidence (e.g., burned ground or broken branches).
  • 3rd Kind: Observing "animate beings" (aliens) piloting or associated with the craft.
So could the 4th kind reference aliens actually living amongst us?

Surely the idea of Close Encounters of the 4th kind could have had merit.

Dunno man, Spielberg seems like one of those (all of them?) who people assume makes good movies, but then you realize no, he was a product of a time period and after that time period he either got in his own head, or it just didn't work anymore. Has he made a truly great movie in the last two decades?

Yeah, there have been movies that are enjoyable or watchable, but he really fell off after the 90's. I'm not saying he's a shit director, as he made some of the most memorable movies of our youth. But he's not the same guy who gave us the classics.
