BG3 is probably much easier to get into - a lot of dikumud adjacent MMOS like Everquest borrowed heavily from dungeons and dragons, so lots of it will feel familiar to a degree. It's also pretty beginner friendly, with the ability to dial up difficulty if you want. There are also a fuckton of mods available

Wait for the winter sale next week. DOS1 dropped to $4 and DOS2 dropped to $12 last year.

The DoS series and BG 3 are two totally different games despite both being CRPGs.
DoS I/II are great and have their own charm, but the production value of BG 3 is absolutely extraordinary. It's objectively the better of the two examples you offered. If you want to break into the tabletop-to-PC rpg scene, you have several dozen games to choose from and the vast majority of them are truly incredible experiences, but BG 3 is on another level and it may spoil some of your enjoyment unless you're really a fan of those types of games.

Yeah pretty much. D:OS 2 has more intuitive mechanics than BG3 does, but otherwise BG3 is a better game in every way.
It helps to be familiar with D&D rules, but BG3 normal difficulty is not aimed at min-max poopsockers in any way, and you have so little you can do a low levels in DND you get plenty of time to pick things up as you go.

One of the releases said Divinity was going to be much larger than BG3. Imagine how many times you would have to play through it to see everything or it would be a very very long ass game. I think in some ways BG3 is too big, that or they should have broken up the acts differently. You get to Act 3 and are soon max level and some of it (not all of it) seems kinda rushed compared to 1 and 2.

Larian is one of the best at using EA to it fullest potential and still pushing something out the door in a "timely" manner.
They are also the best crowdfunding success story that I know of. Kickstarting a small-ish existing studio to make a game that was in their heart (D:OS1) to a studio that shook up the gaming industry with BG3 (mostly self funded?).

I honestly would have been happier had the game been longer. Didn't they cut all the upper / central city portion. Would have also been nice to reach level 20.

So the issue with starting with BG3 is it only gets worse from there. Look at owl cat games first, all the pathfinders they made are excellent, my favorite being wrath of the righteous, rogue trader is also top tier.
Everyone says pathfinder is complicated and they are correct but if you play on normal and don’t try to min/max the recommended class progression is fine.
Divinity series does its own thing and they do it very well. Both very good games and examples of its genre.
Personally I would avoid the older games as the quality of life stuff isn’t there and easy to bounce off of. BG 1-throne of bhaal? Amazing, great story, good times but even I hate how it looks and plays today. Takes hours for it to stop looking ugly as fuck.
tldr, play something recent that isn’t BG3.

As great as BG3 is, and it is great, I prefer the story and writing in other worlds to that of BG3. I found the story and characters to be just ok and noy very deep. I thought that the plot and stories inside of Wh40k Rogue Trader were just better; but that may be because the WOTC influence on what subjects Larian could broach.

No other game has the budget. period.
Owlcats games. Pathfinder kingmaker, pathfinder wrath of the righteous, and roguetrader are top notch, and many consider wotr the greatest crpg of all time.
however, 10th of the budget. little to no voice acting. no mo cap. barebones cutscenes. reading. I hope you like reading. WAY WAY More mechanical depth.
