Well my server is getting closed so looks like I'm done with the game. I'll just wait until I can play solo like they have in Conan and just run my own game.

I knew mine was on the chopping block, so I’ve been farming tons of spice and ingots. I’ll probably wait to see what the post closure server populations look like before choosing a new one

Yeah, got 15 days until migrations. If you do nothing it almost sounds easier, you'll just login and have to pick a server and your base and vehicles will be given to you via the base restoration and vehicle backup tools, but you can do it now manually (instructions in link below)

I tested running a dedicated server, just not super excited about the idea of it permanently occupying like 60%+ of the resources of my server full time.

I guess going w/ a minipc that can only upgrade to 64gb of RAM was an oversight on my part, an excuse to explore putting together another one next year perhaps. I'll have to do some more testing at the different allocation levels (20gb, 30gb, 40gb). I've tested it at 30gb so deep desert wasn't loaded. It took a minute or two for it to spin up and become available, but it was slower for me because I then disconnected and had to forward a few more ports. I'd like to test with 20gb and with a couple friends connected too. Maybe throw together a big base or something to test how that impacts things. Should probably watch their discord too for others going through similar stuff.

Got more to do before friends entrust me with hundreds of hours of their own progress, while I'm over here looking forward to starting over 🤣

If they put the new stuff out with the server migration I would have been motivated to move my stuff because it would have been fun farming again for new stuff. I'll move my stuff before the big patch at the end of the year hopeing more up and leave and spots will be open for my base.

They're teasing a "Polar Cap" map for later this year. It's supposed to act as a follow up to Hagga Basin, or an additional Hagga Basin with harsher survival mechanics.

I must find a new server also; my base is extremely large and specific to where it's currently at.

Worst case scenario, you can recycle a stored base. It gives you a 100% refund on everything used to build the base and everything in it, plus everything you had in storage or in fuel (lose any stored water though from water tanks)

my friend's base, lol.

Also, apparently I didn't put my scout away when I did the fuel rounds and my friend packed it up along w/ his base when he transferred :|

Glad he was next to anvil and i could just fly over to Pinnacle to get back to base and make a new one.

Transferring is annoying, taking apart vehicles and stuff. Blah.

PSA if you need to transfer and wanted to just make a small mule base, you have to wait 24h after placing a fief before you can use the base backup tool on it.

On my server I'm messing w/ the water shipper set, and kinda liking it now. Don't think these external shots do it any justice, it looks pretty nice in the game and really liking the interior.

The lights from the set are nice too - one of the only non-cold lights in the game. Can get some nice ambiance going.

So you've tried the self hosted server fun? You need 64 gig to host all the areas? I've been thinking about trying it. My server is an older dual xeon with 8 cores each with 32 gig o ram.

It takes a lot, yeah. I've given it 35gb of my 64gb mini PC.

A friend has this monster xeon server with some really weird amount of ram, like 192G or something and we were going to get it going on there.

Friend messed with it for a day or so, meanwhile his brother had just bought the game so he and I started on a normal funcom server just to screw around while the server was being worked on.

Turned out his xeons were just old enough that they didn't have avx2 instructions so he couldn't get it running. My xeons do, but I only have 32 gig of ram. Anyway friend joined us and we ended up binging hard and playing like crack fiends again.

Somehow we all forgot about the whole reason we started this. :emoji_laughing:

Beyond the console and single player thing, they also announced something that sounds like you can just move your character everytime you play? Not sure how that works short of a massive overhaul to game systems - would fuck up guilds and base placement in Hagga. They're being sort of coy about stuff coming after 9/22 beyond the ice map "later this year" and Dune 3 cosmetics.

Looks like single player campaign and ability to modify harvesting rates, base decay rate, experience rate multipliers, item durability etc are customizable in single player mode and can go through the whole story fairly easily and have some fun bases. Will likely play through the story when this pops on the 22nd of September.

I spent a bit of time looking into the server stuff again. They did something a bit tricksy; The steamid for the server has different downloads for linux and windows, as you'd expect, but the windows stuff launches a VM that then loads the linux stuff from steam too. Very odd.

I looked at getting it to run without the VM on archlinux. It is kind of made for an init style linux so you have to replace the rc-service stuff with systemd stuff. The k3s stuff doesn't have a package either, so you have to use the install script. There's an AUR package for it, but it is broken (as is often the case with AUR).

Because the k3s stuff is a bit weird on arch, you have to change all the script calls with kubectl and ctr to have k3s in front of them.

I still have a windows partition, really just to fix mods for Conan and VRChat, and I grabbed the server there to see what it was doing. It mostly just runs a setup.sh and then battlegroup.sh. I've yet to make it through the setup.

Right now the cert-manager stuff won't start up (or I guess the term is scale). I can see it in containerd and kubectl get nodes, but it claims it can't find it when I try to do the kubectl scale thing.

I'm really just in full pajeet mode on this. Run it, goog the error, try stuff I have only a dim understanding of. I have only a vague idea what this kube stuff even is. :emoji_laughing:

The one thing I really don't get is how the scale command finds things to launch. Like coredns is launched with the word coredns with namespace kube-system. That name doesn't exist anywhere in the tar, nor the namespace. So how the hell did they know to use those words to launch it?

The thing that fails to "scale" is cert-manager and it tries to launch it with namespace cert-manager. That also has nothing like it in the tar's manifest or other json.

I'll keep at it. The thing that motivated me to look at it again was hitting the last tier of stuff. Goddamn 100 spice sand per melange? I made a medium chem refinery and that was about my limit. I'm gonna crank that ratio at least 10x.

I'd also like to try to rig up some kind of "hardcore mode" where it nukes your character if you die. Without a real devkit though that might be a challenge.
