I’d argue it can have the opposite and undesired effect too where an author just strings shit out forever to keep the money going. Those other litrpg books I tried very much seemed like that, where eventually fucking nothing was happening. Defiance of the fall and primal hunter.

The latter Robert Jordan books are what I always think of when people talk about authors milking their fans. That and Tubs RR Martin.

It’s not pretentious and gay enough for English lit majors.
I have devolved (evolved?) from reading pretentious gay shit to pretty much only straight fantasy and sci fi, so I agree with this statement. I've purged most of the literary theory from my thick skull and have no problem enjoying these genres, and I think Dinniman is incredibly creative and fun to read. Fun is not a word I'd associate with most of the shit I read in college...

Still, part of me winces a bit when his grammar or word choice gets a bit awkward, like repeating the same word twice in a sentence.

I am worried that he is going to do that with DCC. It's supposed to be 10 books, but I heard lately he's been waffling on that. But he's got other books and as long as they do well, maybe he won't be tempted to milk this one idea too much.

Hmm I hope he doesn’t drag it out for the sake of dragging it out. If he extends beyond 10 for a good reason and it doesn’t meander, well I’d be fine with that.

I agree with that. It's pretty obvious he didn't have much of a plan when he started. Hell, I'm pretty sure he has outright said he didn't. So if it's evolving a little it won't be a big deal to me. If he keeps doing 1 floor per book he would need 16 books to get through all 18 floors (because 2 books have had 2 floors, the rest have been one). So either, 16 books, or he's planning to end it on the 12th floor.

That's another consideration. I wouldn't be mad if he ended it on book 10 and told everyone there were 6 more books coming so the ending would be a surprise.

he has many outs after floor 10 with the deals plus he could just have carl figure out a way to ‘legally’ get out or some shit

he should wrap this book up by floor 10ish and start a new series about carl being out and getting revenge

or he can milk it to floor 18 i guess but im thinking the post epilogue npcs and the main storyline are gonna meld around floor 10 and then its a sprint to the finish of the arc

It will probably be 12 or 15 when the NPCs merge in. I think 12, because that's as far as anyone has gotten before. The corps have no clue what is actually going on beyond that point, and probably haven't bothered putting any money or effort into it.

I think He will at least do floor 12 because there's already too much build up to the celestial ascendency. I think mordecai even said that floor happens regardless of whether any crawlers make it.

You guys don't think he's going to do the 18th floor? correct me if I'm wrong but there's a chapter at the end of every book about the pineapple cabaret, and I thought that was the 18th floor. I just assumed all the internal stuff we're hearing about in each of those chapters is building in such a way that it's going to end up creating an actual way to win on the 18th floor. Maybe I'm wrong, just what I assumed.

I feel like he wants to do 18th floor. It's pretty much for sure at least 12th
Even the most prolific writers can hit a block that completely kills their series. GRRM, Jordan, Butcher, etc. I hope he has the tracks laid to the end, but the pace he has been cruising on so far seems untenable otherwise.

Honestly, I'm not confident he has an actual plan. I think he's probably got basic ideas for what each floor will be. I think he has no outline for a story or what occurs getting there.

Compared to someone like Sanderson who has fairly detailed outline for like 86 books.

He said explicitly in some interview that he just throws a lot of fun-sounding stuff at Carl and then figures out how to use it later.

The word I've heard is that those particular epilogues have nothing to do with the main story ... for now. The pineapple cabaret is only in the newest version of the books. Most readers haven't seen them. I plan to eventually go to my local library and read the BATPC story.

Totally true, which is why i mentioned count of monte cristo since the author started dragging those releases out too, by the time the book finished I was just ready for rocks to fall and kill everyone.

But we, as fans of litrpg kind of deserve it. Complaining about Primal Hunter never ending is like buying the 31st expansion of EverQuest because you want to see the story end. It's totally fine to conclude a storyline in these books and just not read the next one. It's what I did with he who fights with monsters and many others.

One good thing about dungeon crawler carl is there is a finite number of books, presumably.

i think the npcs on the 18th will figure a way to communicate with carl and theyll work together to fuck up the game and kill most the irl elite powers

i think it will happen on 13th.

You mean the communications or the killing of real visitors? Other than summoning sponsored gods, We don't know of any way a visitor can be killed on any floor but the 3rd, 6th, 9th, 12th, 15th, and 18th.

The authored has alluded to a bunch of different ways to achieve a victory condition. Awakening all the AI monsters that run the entire civilization and creating a sort of system reset is the most probable one.

this

also we've got a failsafe that essentially blows up the entire solar system which is packed with faction leadership, but the way the AI is talking I think you're theory is a good one.

I don't think it will happen because it would go from lit rpg to sci fi but I'd love these books to wrap up with all the important people in solar system dead (they've alluded to their being a ton there due to the crawl going wonky) and then we get a new series about carl going on a complete rampage through the universe.
