Ok, so why would you want an inferior take on it?
Because there's literally 0 way to do a 100% perfected narrative of Elden Ring. The story doesn't work that way.

Will the movie suck? Maybe, but I'm not looking for a 1 for 1 copy, because it's literally impossible. If it does suck, who cares? It isn't going to "tarnish"(see what I did there?)my love of the video game. But maybe we wait for the fucking thing to come out and be consumed before we start boomering too hard, eh?

Are you somebody who can't compartmentalize and separate the mediums? It can still be my favorite game of all-time and have a movie adaptation, even if it sucks. Can you not look at it in a similar vein as that of the Mad Max stories/movies?

If they just do Godwin, the shattering, and a bit of the war between radahn and malenia and end it there I can see it. I highly doubt they could even get through all the player interaction with Rani in one movie. Let alone the back story of the elder gods, dragons vs giants, flame of frenzy, goldmask, crucible knights, gaols, dungeons.

I doubt they even scratch the Player's interactions. Just do the basic back story and introduce the setting. They could easily milk 5-6 movies out of all the factions.

Yeah, but the way the story unfolds is not a direct narrative. I just dont see how it is going to translate well.
Souls lore style is less LOTR and more Silmarilian.

It's big picture. It's mythology. World building.

Whatever Garland pitched it was good enough to impress Miyazaki.

Of course I can do it, I like the first Silent Hill movie even though it wasn't even close to as good or deep as the game. I just don't understand the reasoning behind doing it at all. Most video game adaptations are duds, and this one just doesn't seem accessible at all.

Maybe you two are right and it will be good. I am just part of the camp that thinks his ass should be working on Elden Ring 2, More DLCs for the first one, or Bloodborne 2 instead of trying to help make this.

It is hard to root for it with the history of video game adaptations; but Miyazaki has never let me down.

You've all changed my mind. I am now cautiously optimistic.

It's hard to trust Alex Garland with a story of this scope. Warfare was incredible, but it was very restrained from a story/setting perspective. Just a squad of soldiers who had a few bad hours. Taking that sentence and making such a great movie from it is very impressive. Ex Machina was similarly focused and scoped. When he had space to play around, though, he produced garbage. Civil War is a mess and Annihilation was okay but had really glaring issues.

I'm going to see it regardless, Devs and Warfare bought him enough credit from me to give anything he does a shit. I just don't see how anything he's done previously prepares him to succeed for this type of movie. I hope I'm wrong.

I can't think of anyone that can pull this scale of movie off, with an exception of a very small group of people.

Peter Jackson
Guillermo Del Toro
Hayao Miyazaki

Anyone else I don't think can pull it off. Maybe... (Huge)maybe...Tim Burton.

Peter Jackson jumped the shark. He doesn't have it in him to do another epic properly. GDT... Maybe? But I don't think his style fits this movie??? Tim Burton can retire already.

Garland's a scifi man. But it's always been really good fucking scifi. He's only recently started getting bigger budgets. Don't forget he also writes some really great screenplays, and he went into the director role because he was annoyed at how some of his stuff ended up. So at least he has a vision he wants to execute. Another note is that Garland wasn't asked to create this. He just was all ramped up from playing it that he couldn't help but write a spec script. There wasn't a filthy studio pushing this on his desk.

If say Robert Eggers was passionate about this kinda story it would be interesting to see.

At the end of the day I'm nervous about all of this.

Edit: just read the budget is over $100m. Compared to civil war which was 50m

I was struggling to come up with names that could pull this off. I was going to mention James Cameron as well but let's be honest... Avatar fucking sucks beyond visuals.

I am interested to see who the actual protagonist of the movie is going to be. Is it going to be a no-name that just gets called "Tarnished" by everyone and doesn't talk much, if at all? I think that is the way to go...but would require so much restraint from the director and writers.
