Started up the PS5 version of Skyrim that I got for like $8 on a holiday sale and was saving for this very situation.

For anybody keeping score, this means I'm now concurrently playing Morrowind, Oblivion, and Skyrim. Lawl.

Playing them back to back, you can really see how much more mainstream (and skewed to the masses) the series got from game to game. Morrowind's got no hand-holding, no glitz or glamor, lots of player control. Skyrim is very controlled and with a lot less for customization. Oblivion is of course somewhere in the middle. Go back to Arena/Daggerfall and they're even more loose than Morrowind, letting you pretty much do whatever.

I was kinda surprised when I decided to murder Ralof in the intro dungeon of Skyrim and it wouldn't let me. Matter of fact the guy barely even acknowledged being slashed and stabbed, and the story events / dialogue kept playing out like nothing was happening while I beat this guy down. Every time I'd batter him down to 0% HP, he'd get up and recover all his HP and start acting like nothing happened. This all seems normal for an ordinary game, but it's jarring when you're coming off of something like Morrowind.

Then I realized I was getting weapon skill-ups from attacking Ralof, and a lot of them. So I grabbed the first two-hander that an enemy dropped and spent the entire dungeon hacking away at Ralof while he ran away and opened doors/threw switches/fought enemies, and went from like 15 to 35 in two-handed weapons by the time I got to the exit.

Skyrim is hilarious

PS5 Skyrim looks decent, but it's nowhere near as gorgeous visually as Oblivion Remastered. It's the difference between a higher-res port and a full remaster. Like Dark Souls 1 Remastered vs Demon Souls Remake. Skyrim's art design is kinda ugly too, but I like the snow. Skyrim probably captured the zeitgeist of the moment really well by coinciding with Game of Thrones exploding into the mainstream around the same time and both having a heavy snow theme (at least as of Season 1 of GOT). It's really too bad they just kinda let the series languish after 2011. Playing this, more games using the Skyrim engine seem like they would have been a no-brainer.

In any case, just checking it out. Next time I ES, it's back to Oblivion to run a caster in that and explore the world a bit, then it's back to Morrowind to start wrapping things up there with my demigod character.

Infamy is an automatic result from many Thieves Guild / Brotherhood quests, but to my knowledge infamy only affects disposition with NPCs. The stuff that can get you kicked out of guilds is specific to each guild, usually involving simple things like assaulting/stealing from other members, etc.

I 100%'d my playthrough doing everything on one character and never had any issues. The only thing that came up was one later quest involved having to steal from a mage that I didn't realize was a Mage Guild member. I think I might have attacked him or something, can't really remember, but it said I was on probation from the Mage Guild or such. I just reloaded an autosave and redid it making sure I didn't assault him and that he didn't see me.

So Dark Brotherhood, Thieves Guild, Mages Guild, and Fighters Guild are the 4 big factions you can join in Oblivion? And don't conflict with each other, so I can do them all on one character? Since I'm going for 100% I should probably join them all early and start doing their quests.

Guessing by 100% that means you got the platinum. Anything missable as far as trophies go? Doesn't look like it, looks like they're all pretty self-explanatory for just maxing out the four factions, conquering the arena, and finishing the main quest.

Weird how Shivering Isles has its own trophy set, but not Knights of the Nine. Guessing the latter is rolled into the main game's set.

IIRC from back in the day, the PS3 version didn't have any trophies at all, and was from that unfortunate first round of PS3 games from before trophies existed. As silly as it might seem, this was one of the things that warded me off from playing Oblivion in-era. I'd just gotten a PS3 and was having fun with the trophy element (which was new at the time with that console gen). Oblivion was very high on my list, but once I tried it out and saw the lack of trophies, I ended up going with Fallout 3, Ghostbusters, and Bioshock instead for my PS3 launch games. Which were all total bangers so it's all good.

Main game trophies are not missable, they're just for doing the 6 quest lines you mentioned. No trophies for Knights of the Nine.

Shivering Isles trophies are similar, but there's a split-off point at the Duke/Duchess rank. You'll want to make a save, do one version of the quest, then reload and do whichever your real choice is. Some simple guides online that can walk you through it.

This is a sweet map, reminds me of the maps in fantasy books I read as a kid like LOTR and Prydain Chronicles. This one is actually worth hanging on a wall if I could print it out in poster format (only $20 per sheet at Staples)

In other news, Jesus:

Nope, just do a 5/5/2 level. Luck is a pretty weak stat btw. All your important stuff ends up at 100 and then it does nothing for those skills, and doesn't even work on Athletics/Acrobatics/Speechcraft at all.
-------------------------

Really wish I knew how easy it is to raise some skills and how hard it is to raise others before I started. I would never take any magic school as a major after seeing how trivial it is to raise them all to 100. On the other hand, I'm in the mid-30's and my Athletics/Acrobatics aren't much past 50 still, and that's with me running pretty much everywhere because the free horse got killed early on and I didn't bother buying a replacement. At least I chose combat as my specialization and not magic.

Well was having a decent time running through 'remember when' in oblivion. Playing a Kajiit Spellsword or somesuch. Hit first oblivion gate, the leader of the guard is stuck at 'lets charge the courtyard' but we're in the fucking courtyard. Guess they didn't fix the jank with the quests. I looked and I've been playing for 18 hours. Not redoing my char for that. Also the only thing I remembered about Oblivion when it came out was how tedious the actual oblivion gates were, and that happened too. Guess I'll give it a pause for a few and move on to one of these other backlog games.

Most of those kinds of errors can be fixed with the console by advancing or resetting the stage the quest is on, or moving the NPC somewhere. UESP is invaluable for these games, any bug you may encounter and its fix is often already listed on the page for the quest.
