Really wish I knew how easy it is to raise some skills and how hard it is to raise others before I started. I would never take any magic school as a major after seeing how trivial it is to raise them all to 100. On the other hand, I'm in the mid-30's and my Athletics/Acrobatics aren't much past 50 still, and that's with me running pretty much everywhere because the free horse got killed early on and I didn't bother buying a replacement. At least I chose combat as my specialization and not magic.

Any major/minor suggestions? I'm up to the part where I have to choose a star sign and of course ran into choice paralysis. The horse sign is +20 Speed, while the Thief is +10 Speed, Luck, Agility. Seems like the Thief would be a much better deal on paper, yeah? Unless Luck really is overrated.

Surprised I can still level from running and jumping like Morrowind. That was super-exploitable in ES3. Getting tons of skill ups in the first area. I like how the skill ups are understated, not like the giant skill up messages in Skyrim.

Atronach is interesting due to the huge offense/defense magic boost. Losing mana regen is too obnoxious though. Weird thing is, in Morrowind my mana doesn't regen anyway and I didn't pick Atronach (think I picked Lady). Probably some sort of bug. I have to sleep to get mana back. Might as well have gone Atronach, lol. Not a huge deal either way.

Is Oblivion Remastered different enough from the original Oblivion that the original is still worth playing? Usually the remaster replaces the original, but occasionally (like Demon Souls) they're different enough that I consider both versions worth playing through. I remember OG Oblivion having green grass and a lot of glowyness on everything. Of course the leveling system is very different as well. Coming off of Morrowind, would I get anything out of plowing OG Oblivion first to see how things evolved? I've got the boxset and everything.

From what I've seen there is no significant difference between the OG and Remaster and I would wholeheartedly recommend playing the Remaster unless you want to run old mods for your playthrough.

As far as birth signs go, I wouldn't get to caught up in the stats unless you want something high from the jump. The improved leveling system in Remaster will have your stats ramping really quickly, so stat focused signs are really only a big deal during early game. The Lord is fairly significant, but even that falls off once you get higher levels as you can hit the 85 armor cap even just using Shield spells and no armor eventually. For me, anything that boosts your mana, especially if you plan on being spell focused in any capacity, will be the most significant benefits long term. Otherwise you are stuck at a max of 200 mana once you cap Int, unless you are Breton/High Elf, or want to enchant all your gear with mana enchants.

Edit: Small addendum, The Thief and it's boost of 10 to Luck is the best of the stat boosts just because each single point of Luck will cost you 4 of your 12 stat points each level increase. Luck really doesn't seem all that significant though, only giving you a small increase to all skills, improves the chance for Mehrune's Razor to proc it's instakill effect (maxes at 6% with 100 Luck), and once you cap a skill, it doesn't overcap from Luck, negating the small benefit.

Majors I'd keep from my initial build: Alchemy, Blade, Block, Heavy Armor. They were all annoying to level to 100 even using cheesy methods to do it. Majors I'd pick instead of spell schools if I had to start over: Athletics, Sneak, and probably something like Speechcraft. Not because I care about Speechcraft, which is useless the moment you can craft spells, but just because it's such a slog to level up if you decide you want the character xp from it. You can also just do Acrobatics, but you can cheese that fairly easily with a bunch of a fatigue potions and the underside of a dock.

Best signs are Atronach (S++++), Mage (S), Thief (A), and Lord (B --really only good at start then becomes obsolete). Atronach, especially as an Altmer, is a minor slog for the first few hours and then it completely trivializes leveling up all of the spell schools, and it can also remove all the tedious micromanagement shit that Oblivion requires you to do to actually kill anything effectively at higher levels/difficulties. Since the only real way to deal damage in the game is through spells and enchantments on weapons, you end up going through the annoying loop of having to constantly make and use magicka potions and/or recharge your weapon with Azura's Star and then find grand souls to refill it with. With Atronach you just get your spell absorb to ~100% and slap a telekinesis effect on your spells and you don't have to worry about the slog anymore.

The only reason to play OG Oblivion at this point is because you want to use a specific set of mods that completely rebalance the game using functions only available with OBSE. OBSE for the Remaster is probably never going to have most of that functionality due to the Unreal Engine wrapper.

I wonder what the long-term modding scene of Oblivion Remake will be, given that Unreal Engine 5 will be best-gen tech for a long time. I wonder if they will upgrade it to new versions of Unreal Engine.

like, magika regens purely based on wisdom in remaster, not off of max magika.
so mage is good, but not AS good as it used to be. and apprentice isn't really worth it anymore.

lords armor is stupid good. so lord's is top tier.

Lord's alright at the beginning but it's so easy to hit the armor cap later on that it really falls off in usefulness. I can see if you're playing an archer, but everyone else should be using a shield since they nerfed 2H weapons into the ground for the remaster. It's fine if you're actually able to use the case presented in the video where he talks about going from 70 to 85, but a proper set of gear is already over 100 (bladeturn hood, cursed magebane gauntlets, rest madness set = 104) and even taking durability loss into account you're never going below 85 before you have a chance to stop for a few seconds to repair.

That video vastly undervalues Atronach.

With the rework of how casting skills level up, being a mage is much easier than before (you now gain more experience for casting more difficult spells rather than just having to spam low level stuff). It also makes it much easier to hit 100 Destruction than in old Oblivion. Make some custom spells that debuff fire resist and some damage over time spells and mobs just melt.

Took me twice as long to hit level 15 as a melee. Don't sleep on Armorer as a melee, you'll be using it a lot if you're taking hits.

Magic schools are super easy once you figure out the magicka cost breakpoints for each tier and then just make a spell that hits that cap. All you need to do to get started is buy a few spells and maybe hit a couple stones for the things that aren't sold. It's even more trivial if you're Atronach and can just stand at the fountain in Bravil using spell absorb on the buff it gives to constantly refill your magicka.

The sad thing about trying to be just melee is that the only thing that actually does significant damage is shield bash. Bleed is ok once you get to 75 blade, but really only works well at 100 and with multiple stacked weakness to magicka debuffs. At which point you're back to being a battle mage and might as well just use all the spells and enchants at your disposal.

And yeah, armorer is a must for the 125% bonus. You actually have to level it up for that, unlike the unbreakable hammer perk which you can get just from a 2 second buff before opening the repair UI. Only reason I didn't take it as a major is because you can use disintegrate spells to level up your destruction which in turn damages your armor so you can repair it for armorer skill ups too. It actually probably is worth taking it as a major though, simply because your destruction will hit 100 long before armorer even gets close to 75 let alone max.

The leveling system in these games (even Skyrim) always just makes me sad. Like it has a good baseline but then they do the dumb crap with major/minor or needing to forge 10k daggers or whatever. It always reminds me of the retarded leveling system in FF8, where playing normally actually makes the game harder for absolutely no sane reason. Oblivion and Morrowind have that as well. irksome.

35. Shield is 49. Blade at 87. Rest are 100. Minor like picking locks, Pew pew bows, sneaking etc are in the 20's. I'm never going to se 36. Spells are just waaaay to easy to level.

Sounds like Luck is something that eats up stat points from level-ups and doesn't really have a major impact. Or maybe it does depending on who you ask. It's a weirdly esoteric stat.

I don't remember if it was the same in the OG version. I know it's nowhere near as impactful as Luck was in something like New Vegas, or if it is, you don't really notice it. My rogue character has it pumped pretty high and I don't notice it at all versus my other battlemage character.

All luck does is increase every skill except athletics, acrobatics, and speechcraft by (luck - 50) * 0.4. It's an invisible bonus so it can't help you hit 25/50/75/100 perks and skills > 100 do nothing for you. There's also a couple trivial things it helps with like Mehrune's Razor procs and gambling at the arena.

It's a decent choice for +5 at the beginning but not worth using stat points on until everything else except for personality (which is completely useless) is maxed.

Running around finishing trainer quests. Can't train me any more ofc, but I'll be damned if there's an unfinished quest in the log. Closed 5 portals so far. 35 to go, lebigsigh. Haven't figured which stones to enchant with. Shitty ones so far.

There are a static 40 total portals? I figured they were somewhat random. I only closed the ones required for the main quests including the "send help to the north" ones. So that was like... 8 total, maybe 10? I can't imagine doing 40 of those things, even just invis running past everything was so fucking tedious.
