EQ Never

That's exactly my point though. in your example the MMO community would literally explode with whines of bla bla required grind, bla bla. Any new addition to an existing game, or step away from the standard of existing games is entirely viewed as negative by the majority. Because people even when bored dont realize why they're bored and that some challenge would help the game.

So since these games arent a charity, you need a company willing to put making the better before the bottom line. Which company would do that? Certainly not EA or NCSoft, nor Blizzard or SOE. They're too big for that

I want a game with a balanced risk vs reward ratio - not EQ'99 and not WoW'12. I just dont see it being made. And I very much doubt this discussion, although interesting, has any place in this thread. Because even the small bits we know about EQN (F2P, console title) spell out that it isnt going to be that game we theorize about here.

Well that's because players are used to the solution always being a dumb down version of the issue or complete removal. Which I have never agreed with. Subtle changes where the game and it's community overall benefit should always be the approach. I don't understand why companies don't get that.

'Balanced' for whom? What do you mean by balanced?

Also 500 guilds cleared Lei Shen heroic, does not seem easy to me. All Warcraft did was to introduce multiple raid tiers because 97.5% or so of the subscribers never managed to finish a raid instance.

Is the argument here that Warcraft is easy because you have cleared in LFR? Is anyone here really arguing that Warcraft is easy at all? Warcraft has many flaws but the heroic 25 mans are as hard as they can be, only you get items that are colored purple sooner than in vanilla.

Or is the argument that you don't want other players to experience content unless they are hardcore and LFR should go?

I haven't played WoW since Vanilla but I don't think it's so cut and dry. I think what he is saying(not that I want to speak for him) is the little things that made the game frustrating/hard yet rewarding throughout the game are gone. The options have been taking off the table so to speak.. For instance.. I played a Wizard in EQ. I really wanted Jboots so I sat my ass in the desert for days until I got them. He actually killed me the first time lol. I put in the time and effort and I was reward for it. I made that choice and another player might not want to go that route but the option was there. Where are those options today?

Question to those who were not able to participate in EQs raid scene -

Despite not participating, did the allure of something difficult/great loot contribute to your EQ experience? To clarify I suppose, even if you didn't loot full Thorny Vine, a Primal weapon, or actually ever wear a Cobalt BP, wasn't it still pretty badass to see them?

Yes it was. I took a break before Velious and came back during it. Seeing our Wood Elf MT in full Kael quest armor with Velious textures was indeed badass.

I did the raid scene in Everquest and couldn't play the game if I wasn't raiding. But, seeing a Cryosilk Robe for the first time was sawwwwwwwwwwwwweeeeeeeet.

Verant had their forums for a while, but shut them down after they couldn't handle the sheer volume of complaining and flaming. This was maybe around Velious time? New official forums came up a couple years later and are still going now.
Yea so the highlight of Eq happening around the sametime with no official forums. Coincidence? Duh duh duh

I swear, after a few years of reading WoW forums, the general Mcposter feels legally permitted to demand change they want by paying that 15 a month.

You just cant have a circlet of shadows in WoW without the world crumbling to pieces by the weight of so many forum tears.

Am not saying be dead silent like verant / sony was, but there must be a sweet spot in the middle of both.

Edit: See, why the hell can i name a freakin item i played in a game over 10 years ago. It aint no freakin nostalgia. Eq was just the shit and nothing came close to it still. Howling stones. God did I have fun diying , cursing and getting lost in that place. I guess we just have to feel lucky to have been part of something so unique.

I do agree, that was amazing. And yet many players didn't like it. I also remember the in-game event of the undead invasion before the WotLK release. It was nice, it had variety in a sense that a city was no longer a safe place and you would play the role of a ghoul infecting others. And yet some people in my guild hated it because they just wanted to hang out in Orgr to do arenas, like they did every single day. No matter what, you can never please everyone.
Again, the lazy lobby vs world issue... some folks want to log in for 5 minutes get warped and get purples, others want to explore a world and the 2 groups honestly deserve different games..

I don't know their ultimate plan of course, but from what I read.... I like the idea of their Player Studio, but I feel it would be better if it were more streamlined into the game and more accessible to the average player. As it is now I have neither the time nor the desire to learn 3d modeling and texturing, but I would love the ability in game to have a crafting engine of sorts where you start with a base sword/axe/table whatever and craft it with whatever visible options are available; texture, size, adornments, highlights, spikes etc. Hell, combine both systems where actual artists to put up the templates/options. You could browse various player created textures to apply to your sword... or create a blue print for an actual crafter to make.

That way you could still control the items (everyone won't be running around with purple penis swords) but still give players the ability to 'create' their own items to show off.

Neverwinter has player created dungeons and such, while its is a pretty cool concept for that game, it did nothing for immersion of the game world. It seemed to disconnect you from the story of the world.

That's OK, the story is pretty damn weak.

I'm still surprised they're not calling this Norrath. EverQuest is not that much of a brand name outside their current fanbase, who will be aware of their next game regardless of its name.

Most of my WoW friends sure as hell did not. UO either. So, I doubt it. The majority of the MMO playerbase didn't begin until after WoW. Why would they learn about it?

Did you know of EQ before wow? If you did I bet you talked about it with your wow friends who didnt..just like I did. Not to mention the large portion of players who made te jump from EQ to Wow.

I'm just not buying there is a large base of MMO gamers out there right now who are just hearing of EQ for the first time with EQ and EQ2 being out for years.

The issue is always the same, doesn't matter how you paint it: people will only do something that rewards them appropriately, most people, that is. Adventuring is not a reward in itself for the vast majority of the playerbase.
That's kind of sad to me. Maybe it's because I grew up on the whole D&D thing where shit like tomb of horrors could murder you for one bad choice, but I just love the adventure and the dungeon itself is usually the main course, with loot as a nice afterthought. I feel like most people feel the other way around. Thats why I kind of hope loot is less prevalent and something you tend to use for more levels at a time. I don't really want to focus my entire gameplay experience around +betterer stats on weapons, but I also like being able to look forward to a sweet, new upgrade. It's kind of a fine line to walk.

As with other aspects of life. There is a high tendency to value a reward that you earned rather than one that was given to you. Earning your characters level, gear, and notoriety will create stronger bonds between the players and their characters, the game world, and the game itself.

You're insane. EverQuest is no Coca-Cola or Apple but it is a huge brand, as MMO brands go.
