That is indeed the point of PvP servers. Everything becomes something to control and fight for. PvE servers shouldn't focus on this PvP oriented competition.I played on PvP servers in EQ, so this wasn't a problem in my mind. Part of the fun was fighting for the content that you want. If you lose the fight, then there are consequences. It was a prize to the victors, and it made the fights more meaningful.
Not being able to bat gave me a better appreciation of being in the lineup...It's not about being handed a home run, it's about being allowed to bat. Plenty of people fail in instances.
Too much instancing kills open world PvP though. That is indeed the point of PvP servers. Everything becomes something to control and fight for. PvE servers shouldn't focus on this PvP oriented competition.
I can understand using instances in the PvE context. I still think it's a poor design choice, but I can at least understand it. I'm hoping that "the largest sandbox ever made" means PvP (as it should), but I realize the chances of that are none to none. That is indeed the point of PvP servers. I don't want instances at all. They totally kill the game for me. Instances make farming and botting way easier and in PVP they suck. TBH you don't have to do much to include PVP in a sandbox game. Just stick with EQ1 Rule sets and people will popular your servers PVE and PVP. Keep the basis on grouping and interacting and while people may bitch, they will start to enjoy it after a while and it allows them to create enough content. Obviously you can't have obnoxious levels like EQ1 but something in between EQ1 and 2 would be fine. Anyways, I am eager to see if this game will be a steaming pile of crap or not. I don't have my hopes up after so many let downs.I can understand using instances in the PvE context. I still think it's a poor design choice, but I can at least understand it. I completely agree. As I posted earlier, I think instances are a poor design decision even in the PvE context. What I am saying is that there will be instancing because more people enjoy PvE than PvP. If they do throw up a couple of PvP servers, they aren't going to take the instancing out just for those few servers.I don't want instances at all.
I'm almost on the opposite side of the spectrum. I have no problem with instances at the bottom of a non-instanced dungeon(as mentioned earlier). Having very rare loot is of a secondary concern for me and I'd rather PVP be a very minor detail with little effort used. PVP destroys games just as easily as quick leveling does. I'd rather see slow leveling so that the world is seen and appreciated. Why design so much for so little to be experienced? Farming is just as easy for a select few in EQ and the fight for every resource needs to stay on a few Zek based servers. Sure, make it so that getting everything is impossible without massive time spent but guaranteeing something is unavailable because you aren't on the game all the time is asinine.I don't want instances at all. Don't kid yourself. It's about giving them the game with a forfeit. Instances are mostly bullshit - there are a few special cases where they're appropriate (such as the class specific quests in LOTRO).It's not about being handed a home run, it's about being allowed to bat. The only "instance" that should exist is the server instance: that's division enough. As long as servers are reasonably populated (whatever that # is for EQN) then there should be no need for dungeon instancing beyond a few special exceptions. If a server is getting too populated: split it. If it isn't populated enough: merge it.
I would be perfectly happy if they just throw up a PvP server with little or no thought into how the balancing would work out, a la EQ. MMOs that try to capitalize on PvP always seem to do more harm than good. The rock-paper-scissor system of WoW is an absolute joke. WAR focused so much on the PvP, they forgot the PvE aspect has to be fun as well. So long as EQN is a fun PvE game and they give me the option of a PvP server, I'll be happy. Take instances out of it, and I'll be ecstatic.I'd rather PVP be a very minor detail with little effort used.
I feel this way. As I said above, give me PVE thats hard and challenging and a few pvp rulsets ala Zeks and I'd play for years.Plenty of people feel that way dude. There will be people who come here and tell you that's not really how you feel or it's just nostalgia you can't really want that kind of game...
Right so lets hope everyone doesn't lose their mind when something like that exists for a whileThere were big oversights with the classes too. Like as a Necro you could go in to the Frenzy room in l.guk, charm the frenzy and set him on the other mobs then just feign death. He would continue to fight for you while the other frogs all ignored me. Then you just pop up and nuke him, loot, and repeat on the other mobs. They soon changed it so that charm broke if you feigned.
There was quite a severe exploit I found with the enchanter class, but I'm wary of mentioning it because I'm not sure it ever got fixed. Someone saw me do it on an emulator server and then nerfed hell out of chanters because of it, but hopefully it still works on eq mac, I'll have to try it sometime.
Not sure why people think nostalgia is an insult. It's not saying you don't know what you want, only that it explains WHY you want it. What we're saying is that without that nostalgia, a lot of those features would be huge turn offs. SOE would be limiting themselves to a very limited market if they only aimed for former EQ players.Plenty of people feel that way dude.
