Don't join a guild that will call you at 3am? Lol

A lot of this stuff is in your control people.

i dont know you, but i can already guarantee you don't have the minutes in the day to do what you used to do.
Lol, true. But I still want to compete with other guilds to fight for the right to kill the best mob. It's much more fun then dealing with the craptastic scripted AI that has always been, and always will be, a snoozefest.

If it were my game, I would separate top end raid mobs into 3 types of zones. Put some in PvP areas, put some in grief friendly PvE areas and put the rest in PvE bluebie areas with lock out timers. Spread the best loot around on all of them and let the fun happen.

Put all of the loot on PvE mobs in bluebie no grief areas, but with a smaller drop chance and a lock out timer. That gives players an incentive to go to riskier areas to fight for it without lock out timers and a higher drop percentage. But it isn't mandatory.

what i'm preaching is it's possible, i hope, to compromise on instancing so that high end raiding doesn't require their target audience of (we hope) 20-30 year olds to wake up at 3 am before work.

Past it? I hope they perfect it.

Do you really ever want to dig back end to some of the bullshit that went on when you raided & competed against other guilds?
I can almost say with certainty the people who answer yes to that question, were at the top or near it, so it wasn't a big deal for them(playing 8+ hours a day and could login at anytime). But for the other 80% of the server I bet it wasn't as fun. Thankfully EQ didn't completely erase previous expansions when a new one came out or there would of been even less to do for the people that didn't have the time/people/coordination to compete for current content.

It will be interesting if the people say "yes" and that's what we get, then they realize they don't have the time like they used to to be super competitive and end up having nothing to do or fighting for the stuff no one wants , if they still prefer that.

I think I got lucky, was on The Rathe and they had a rotation calendar that the entire server followed.

What you have to ask yourself is:

Knowing what SOE knows about the nature of guild/guild interaction when it comes to raid game spawn competition, and knowing that EQ next is going to be a highly dynamic and large world, why on earth would they make static timed raid spawns?

No, raid targets will be spawned based on player/guild actions on an on demand basis. Meet x conditions, spawn y mob. Not rocket science. All of EQnext will operate like this. Ill be shocked if I'm wrong.

The really interesting thing ill be if spawn locations for these mobs (ex. Nagafen's roost) will be in *gasp* PVP contested territory

Fuck raiding anyway.

Raiding is for people who suck. Here's how it works. You are johnny noobcake, level 2 ranger. It takes you months to reach level 10, then many more months to reach 20. You finally start getting in groups and slog your way through the 30's, and you start sucking a bit less and getting the hang of a few things. Eventually, you slog your way through the 40's too. Then kunark comes out and suddenly you have a whole bunch of new grinds to do, and some really deadly dungeons. You only went to Karnor's Castle a few times and died horribly, died so bad travelling through Burning Woods you nearly lost your corpse after dying and rage quitting. In Chardok you fell in a hole and had to pay for a necro to summon you outta there. And sebilis requires a key, that's gay.

But that's where raiding comes in. You get in to a few pickup raids and you don't really have to do anything... You meet up with the army of people at the wiz spires and some kind wiz ports you all up there. You just hang around at the back while some uber people pull the mobs to the group. You press your hotkey and just stay quiet at the back. It takes many weekends, but eventually, you have a raid bow, raid weapons, and some raid armor. People recognize your name as you are now part of "teh raid scene" and you eventually manage to join a guild full of other people just like you. The guild has about 100 people and they can do their own raids, all organized by a few super stressed guild leaders, shouting at all you plebs like gunnery sergeant hartman.

But that's ok. You just go with the flow, and before you know it, you have a full set of the best gear in the game. And now places like Karnor's Castle don't seem so bad any more! You might only be a ranger but your gear is so good now you can practically tank! And your weapons are so good you can engage auto attack and go afk and still do good dps. The world is your oyster. You still haven't even seen a lot of it, and most of the good stuff you have seen after basically engaging cheat codes, but still, you have raid gear and that means you are elite.

I hope you get what you want quaid. It's highly entertaining watching people literally already invested and bought into EQ:N with nothing more then some PR twitter messages and seem to know what the game is going to be like(Unless there is some hidden leaks I missed somewhere).

Especially given SOEs reputation before this game was announced.

No leaks - kinda just reading the tea leaves.

Things appear to be going the way I described.

I sure hope your tea leave are not just Smed's PR marketing.

Hell we even have proof of SOE going more mainstream(less customization, more homogenized, easy travel etc) with a sequel recently. Planetside 1 compared to Planetside 2.

It wasn't as bad as you think. Even back then my career kept me very busy, and my girlfriend (fiance at the time) also made demands. After reaching max level, most of my time in game was raiding. We did have a 5 night a week mandatory raid schedule but I logged on 10 minutes before and logged off 10 minutes after. My guild was very efficient so raids usually took just under 3 hours. I would spend one long 5 to 8 hour session during the weekend getting prepped for the next week and building AA's.

When a new expansion came out was the roughest. That usually meant taking off of work for a couple of days to level up and making apologies to my girlfriend. After the expansion was in full farm mode, I usually took a break from the game for a month or two and let other players get some raid time in.

I held that schedule from Kunark to PoP, and it worked very well. Much of my guild did the same, it kind of became our thing and we had a lot of of fun. We also had to compete against multiple guilds on our server because it was FFA. And that is what I enjoyed most.

Even that schedule is a bit much for me now. But if a game is designed properly it can still give players the same kind of excitement without the massive time commitment.

Not sure if you are being sarcastic or not but,

Thats not how EQ worked at all.... Most people earned their name in KC and places like it. Pullers who could split the hand room. Bard/chanters who didnt care if you did, tanks keeping agro, kill speed for the dps, healers who could maintain their mana ect ect.
