EQ Never

UI hotbar is likely going to get improved but it doesn't bother me now so I'm good with that. The health and defense meters are undoubtedly temporary so I'm good there, too. All that shit is the easy stuff to fix.

I've got no idea what the fuck I just watched though. What I don't really understand (and maybe after I play some tonight I'll get it) is how that is fun. It was a series of extremely ridiculous jumping, air walking and jumping, weird floaty animations and now the ability to grab on to tree branches which looks like is going to randomly happen.

A lot of that stuff is making it into EQN (heroic movement and all that shit). I hope it's a heavily modified to not be so absurd looking. You can't crank everything up to 11 and expect raiding a fort to be fun. There has to be some level of realism (fucking don't bring that stupid "but elves and fantasy" shit argument) and knowing that your guy isn't a superhero. If sacking a castle is going to be epic, you need to feel human and smaller than the rest of the world.

Jeez, this is literally Day 1 of Combat. Show me what day 1 of alpha combat looked for Darkfall and then we can discuss it. I'm as skeptical as the next man but give it a chance before comparing it to already released games.
What am I giving them a chance with? Why should I? When it gets better, and I am sure it will, I will say so. But right now that looks like complete shit. I don't care if it's Alpha, you shouldn't release what appears to be basic combat from a Unity engine like that from a AAA studio. Alpha or not, it's still public. Alpha/Beta does not mean what it used to mean 10 years ago.

When I say it's complete shit, I'm not saying the game will never be good or that will be the final product, I'm just commenting on how bad it looks. What am I supposed to say here? Am I supposed to be excited that they managed to put in the most basic system into a game?

Here you go my man. There's nothing to discuss, I'm done with this thread until next year.

One of the biggest things their new approach to software development with the Landmark alpha is show why most companies never ever let users interact this close with software as it's being written.

Part of it's just us humans being our dumb selves, but software is never done, nothing is ever final, and everything is open to change. You should definitely still criticize and give them feedback on what you do and don't like, and why, but you still have to consider the context in which they're showing you features. Some things they obviously want feedback on now, other things they've said they're still working on. This is how software goes.

That said, my questions about the pvp shot they showed:

-What's up with the (what seems like) really small square they can actually fight in?
-Why can everyone jump 800 feet in the air and fly around?

I liked the lack of (or seemingly lack of) tab-targeting.

Ahaha, this is the one game where that tired phrase doesn't actually apply, but sure. If anything, Landmark is still in Alpha; Beta is considered "feature complete", which Landmark is clearly not. They just promised Closed Beta by a certain time and had to abide by that to appease the people that bought their pre-order packs.

-What's up with the (what seems like) really small square they can actually fight in?
-Why can everyone jump 800 feet in the air and fly around?
- The small box they're fighting in is the size of a single claim in Landmark. It looks like they just plopped a claim down and started fighting in it, but you can make these claims larger by adding adjacent claims onto it.

- There are a lot of items in the game that alter movement; one of those items let's you double jump, another let's you glide while falling, others that boost your run speed, and grappling hooks that allow you to attach to any surface on the game and pull yourself to it. That's why it looks like people are flying all over the place.

They said they'll be addressing this in future iterations, likely requiring that each jump take a significant amount of "energy" (which is the stat that is also used for activating your abilities). For now, they just dumped it all in as-is and asked for feedback.

The small square is someones claim, they turned it on for a pvp deathmatch game.
Since Landmark isn't really a MMO they have crazy items like double jump boots and glide cloaks they haven't tied these abilities down to stamina yet so people are flying around all willy nilly.
No targeting or tab targeting all combat is "Moba" style with a targeting reticule kinda like a FPS.

The entire original goal of Landmark was to release everything they are working for in Next to the public piecemeal so players can test on the fly and help build the game.

They could of 100% kept combat out of landmark for another year and released a polished product but it goes against everything they said. They want your input and feedback. Obviously it looks like shit but I'd assume people would want some shit combat in the sandbox then zero combat in the sandbox.

If you want to fanboy mode that's fine. But there is nothing to provide feedback for. It's the most basic combat system you can put into the game. What is there to test?

Cool, thanks for the answers guys. That all makes sense, at least. I still hate the small (IMO, obviously) size of the default claim, but interested to keep watching where they take this.

Wow that UI looks awful. That whole gold/blue outlines and embossing look dreadful. The font is crap too. I mean it's all just really really bad.

I have to imagine all the animations, spell effects and whatever are all placeholders because they are equally awful. Honestly, it looks like an updated EQ2. What do you call updated shit?

Maybe it's that persons computer though. The demos I've seen never looked that shitty.
As I said, the industry just keeps getting worse & worse as we go forward. It's fucking ludicrous. Hopefully we'll get buried EQ Next boxes in the desert ala E.T., the industry implodes on itself (along with Blizzard), and a Miyamoto can reset it.

You can basically have up to 6 claims one main claim and 5 attached ones and you can place a piece to tie them to be all in your PVP area or select some to be and some to not be in the PVP area. I am sure a lot of what we are seeing is people just making basic little arenas to test stuff out but even with 4 claims you could make a pretty sizable map. I also fully expect to see some labryinths of death show up pretty fast as I have seen some awesome mazes and throwing pvp into one of those would get crazy fast.

Apparently, if you step out of bounds for over 10 seconds you forfeit; with all the launchers and destructible environments, it would be fun to see floating battlegrounds, somewhat Smash Bros style, where you are trying to throw people off by pushing them onto launchers or destroying the ground beneath them. Grappling hooks can save you if you time it right, but that would take some skill.

It would be cool if you planted trees along the launcher route so if they are quick enough you can combo grapple back into the arena.

I've already seen floating battlegrounds as of today so making a smash arena would be easy.

That combat looked awful, and the design looks highly questionable. Alpha or not, does not inspire.

Agree. About the only thing that looked interesting to me was the grappling and how they will factor into pvp.

But I will digress and say its first try, so I will give them benefit of the doubt and hope it gets better. Will probably come check out landmark again in 6 months or so.

I don't have any confidence if the next jump in innovation is going from "your accuracy/hit rating is not high enough noob" (while being lodged up their ass) to "LOL FPS Parkour spam AE more noob". I cringed every time he used the shot with a cast time while trying to FPS that shit, thought about how many of 40 classes would have ability choices completely or partially screwed by such a system, imagined the famous "well PVP is only meant to be balanced in small scale single group vs group settings" dev bullshit followed by the neutering of any type of AE and then there'd be the massive FOTM shifts with every patch as the nerfs get tossed around.

Yes, I got all of that from the video. That's how awful it was.

You craft them like everything else in the game. They require zero resources. Also, wrong thread.
