I’ve seen some new people starting to try this recently.

Make sure you start your guild early on. Some people will join you right away, some you will have to group with for a hour or so before they trust you enough to join. Doing this early helps you avoid trying to group with lots of noobs/undergeared people later in the game when it’s more difficult.
You’ll see helpful stuff in guild chat and can race other guilds for targets later in the game. You may need to start one to open your guild hall thing too, where you can stick portals once you find them which helps a lot with traveling around the map, porting to town and selling stuff at the auction house, etc.
Friend list people you like and they will level up when you log off and stay close/even with you. You have some people who are automatically set up as your peers who function the same way as friends in that regard. You can see friends and peers in the build a group window.
