Watch the streamers for gameplay and game mechanics, but believe NOTHING they say about if it's "fun" or "enjoyable". They are ALL paid shills.

That would be disappointing. But, fun is also subjective. People saying that you can solo pull a whole zone in THJ and massacre it was fun. I would disagree and call that boring because there’s zero challenge or risk.

It's wild how much $$ they spent marketing this shit already but honestly who could they even get, the only decent sized Streamer that will touch EQ is Cohh and he already said this is shit so...

Clearing the whole zone was for grinding AA and item xp. How would you rather grind out AA?

[Using a SK/Rog/Wiz] It took at least 1000+ AA in THJ in order to clear everything but that last boss or three. For example, I started mostly in Velious. At max level and ~500 AA, I could not kill most of the dragons in NToV, nor the end bosses in giant or dragon city. The final boss of the Xpac was Sleeper, a custom made boss by THJ team; I think I needed ~1500 AA in order to kill him (plus a decent amount of upgraded NToV gear).

[Using a SK/Brd/Wiz] For grinding, at ~500 AA, I could not kill all of Dragon Necropolis at once. I had to break it into at least 4 or 5 pulls. At ~1000 AA I could pull all of the top in 1 pull then all of the rat tunnels in 1 pull (DN was too buggy to try to do the whole zone, imo). By the time the rats were mega crit nuked by Wiz buffed Bard nukes, the top was respawned, so off to do al that again.

Would you rather march through Dragon Necropolis killing a few mobs at a time getting 1/20th the XP rate? That is somehow more fun? That is going to be the zone where mobs give the most xp per hp, so if you want to slow march through somewhere else, it's going to take even longer.

I don't remember the actual time spent, but grinding XP in Velious didn't feel like it was taking that long or being overly tedious. Once I could clear Sleeper, I didn't grind XP until Luclin and found grind spots in Luclin to grind item XP. Plane of Fire is where I could pull a massive amount of mobs (~60% of the zone) and burn it with Bard/Wiz synergy in ~3 spells. I still split it into a front group and a back group due to the game crashing while trying to process all those crits at the same time (Wiz spells would crash in PoF, but bard wouldn't). Since AA was all farmed and I was only doing it for item XP, it became enough of a drag that I decided to end PoP and wait for LDoN, even though I could not reliably kill the last 2 bosses (1 being a custom THJ boss).

Edit: Most zones were not being mass pulled and those zones that were, didn't usually have bosses in them. The three zones I mass pulled were DN, Umbral Plains, and PoFire (many people did Chardok too; Vex Thal was too buggy to do reliably). The instances you could spin up with bosses in them had long cooldowns.

If your goal is max xp per hour then you’re absolutely correct, that’s the best route. I just don’t think that’s necessary for vanilla EQL. Come Kunark, probably.

Is killing a couple of mobs at a time any more challenging or dangerous? Like Burns said, the killing entire zones was purely for AA/leveling items. It made the tedious/boring parts of the game go a little faster. This was also possible on live with swarming/headshot (prenerf) etc, so it’s not like this was a THJ specific thing.

Not directly related to your conversation but the idea I'd love to see in a TLP (or any game really) is a system where the longer you keep mobs dead in an area the harder and more rewarding it gets. In EQ just jacking up the spawn rates by 25% everytime a mob is killed with X minutes of being spawned would be enough.

No, the tedium isn’t fun. Like I mentioned pages ago, I never played THJ and hadn’t even heard about it until a week ago, so I’m just learning the history of this server model.
I “think” I know what I will and won’t enjoy, but time will tell.

According to the devs there's a "3rd way" to power up items involving your raid instances. The first two are merging the same items, the second is using motes, and the third unreleased. They said it's almost ready to be implemented, but haven't 100% said what it is, but if it APPEARS to be some way to choose to forego loot to empower certain items. Again that's an educated guess. IF it is indeed that, that'll take some of the RNG sting out of it.

It's pretty amazing watching the normies and shills talk about this project like its the second coming of jesus. Honestly this is how they think.

It doesn't sound like EQL has close to the same amount of AA available at this point, so they might be going with every Xpac unlocks more AA... especially if they are going to try to charge money for each Xpac.

I think THJ had all, or almost all of the AA available from the very start (plus each class got a few signature AA for free, at level 1), but not sure how much power you really needed to kill Nag/Vox (Janx carried me through the Kunark unlock flags, which required killing Vox/Naggy and maybe some others). Same goes with Kunark, mostly carried through the flags to unlock Velious. As a total noob I had no idea what I was doing with new server mechanics, but all the bosses were pretty fast to get done by a geared toon (when the noob didn't forget how to navigate a zone they haven't been in for 20+ years).

Yeah that makes sense to hold back on AAs until new content releases. Possibly helps with run away power creep too.

I’ll be in the same boat. I can’t remember all the zone paths like Guk. Shit is an absolute maze. The in game map looks helpful, of course, but also a little too informative showing all mobs and their con colors even if you can’t track.

In a version of the game where you arent really competing with others i dont see the issue with the MQ-esque map. At least once the personalized instances are enabled, then its just seeing what you can pull at that point.

It's kind of cool that the range of seeing mobs on it scales with your tracking skill as well if you play a class with it

They're giving out 50 beta keys if you watch the stream Saturday 6pm est on their twitch channel. They're trickling out these invites, maybe once personal instances go in they'll open it up more. They havent confirmed if they'll ever do an open beta either.
I saw a streamer drop an item on the ground to test getting around the 'trade an item once and its bound' mechanic and it worked. I suppose that will get fixed up quick but if it doesnt.

Seeing personal loot in action makes me not want to play on Teek anymore or roll a new box crew on Frostreaver. The other upcoming server with personal loot is not free trade, which is a must for me with my inability to group consistently for raiding. July can’t come soon enough. I’ll be watching Saturday for a key chance I guess. I get summers off so would love to use some of this free time.

They've hinted at personal dungeon instances going in the patch tomorrow. Caster "stances" will also go live.

Game definitely needs dungeon instances before wider audience or it will get very crowded.
