Everquest Legends

EverQuest "Classic" was cool and all, but I don't think it became the stuff of "Legends" until Kunark and Velious came out, it was a very high quality trilogy and the stakes kept getting higher without going into silly territory I thought.

I personally enjoyed Luclin and even liked most of Planes of Power but it was becoming silly to go kill gods left and right and they had to undo it all with the Plane of Time deus ex machina at the end anyway.

They should have polished the same mechanics for Kunark and Velious and released them quickly, as it is most of their work will not pan out due to WoW Forever poaching a lot of the classic junkies.

Random Jaled'Dar in Dragon Necropolis, because it comes to my mind when I think of epic stuff I saw in EQ.

Exactly what would be the most common sense thing to do, which is why they were incapable of doing so.

They are woefully misguided if they think that people who have been unsubscribed for months are even going to remember the game exists let alone stop whatever else they are doing to come back.

Yes and no. Pretty much anyone who plays MMOs in current year has a few on rotation since none of the companies can keep up with customer demand for more content. I haven't played Triune in a week because I am hitting d4. I won't be back to EQL until *ALL* of Kunark is in. Not sure WTF they were smoking splitting that in half. I got 4 months of fun out of $40 in EQL, which isn't bad for an MMO.

What's new

  • Lake Nerius. A new open zone and the approach to the castle. The land has become overgrown since the incident in the castle.
  • Nektropos Castle. An endgame dungeon with more than 20 named creatures to slay, all set inside the Everling family’s home.
  • The Nektropos Undercroft. A hidden starting area under the castle, made into a home by people the household have never noticed.
  • Ayr'Haeth. A new playable race with the Undercroft as its home.

A house in mourning

The Everlings are one of the great houses of Norrath, and for years the family kept a curious, glittering collection of rare things. Then something broke. A servant of the household, worn down by years of abuse, took Lord Rikantus Everling's prized enchanted sword and murdered all seven of his daughters.

Lord Rikantus went mad. He is now raising the bodies of the dead.

His surviving son, Lord Ollix Everling, is trying to keep the whole thing quiet, and he needs help from people who will not talk. He has sent out an invitation. If you can find your way inside, he will meet you there.

EverQuest II players may recognize this house. In that game, Nektropos Castle is a cursed ruin and the Everling daughters are ghosts, five centuries on. EverQuest Legends is set when it all began.

Getting inside

Nektropos Castle

The castle doors are locked, and you will need to earn your way in. Access begins in Lake Nerius with Retainer Ozval, who manages the affairs of the castle and its lord. His questline leads onward, including a trip to the Plane of Hate.

Once you are inside, the main quest runs the length of the castle and all of its bosses, and ends with two high-end rewards. We will leave the rest for you to find.

Meet the Ayr'Haeth

Ayr'Haeth Male and Female

The Ayr'Haeth have been living under Nektropos Castle for a very long time, and the lord above them does not know they are there.

  • Cursed Heritage: 10% increased effectiveness of taps and runes. 20% reduced base health regen when outdoors in the day.
  • Life Tracking: Increased sensory range for living NPCs on your map.
  • Also: Hide, Sneak, and Infravision.
  • Starting out: A new race, the Ayr'Haeth, also known as Half Dark Elves, will be available for the first time. With this update we are introducing the concept of race levels in addition to class levels. While existing races will all remain level 50, any new races we add to the game, including the Ayr'Haeth, will start at level 1.
  • Unlocking: You can unlock the Ayr’Haeth as a playable race by completing a new quest starting in Lake Nerius.

Halloween in Norrath

The season is running alongside the launch, through Nov 3rd.

  • A free Werewolf pet illusion is available in the in-game shop for the duration of the event.
  • A new Ayr'Haeth-themed quest in Lake Nerius. Complete this seasonal quest before the Halloween event ends to earn a free pet illusion of your choice!
  • More pet illusions are available in the Marketplace, including the Undead Frog, Scarecrow, Skeleton, Vampire Bat, Spectre, Gelatinous Cube, Zombie, and Mummy.

Come in

Lord Ollix Everling formally invites you to Nektropos Castle. We look forward to your arrival.

Berserker buffs abound in these patch notes. Frenzy now does damage based on weapon ratio, berserk stance NO DOWNSIDE, rampage Rank 2, and monster summoning pets are now War/Ber which is interesting.

I'd feel hypocritical for calling them out on Blue half elves when Blizzard did similar.

But atleast Skyelves have actual character customization beyond 5 face options.

While I personally disagree with spending energy on new content for a game who's player base only wanted to steamroll OG zones, I understand making new races start at level 1. They spent the time making a new newbie zone and want people to actually play it. If they didn't, everyone would roll their new blue elf at 10 and head straight to befallen.

But this wouldn't have been a problem if they would have just focused on kunark (and rebirth or whatever it's called). People would have gladly reset to 1 for field of bones/kurns or where ever their nostalgia takes them.

Even if this new blue elf newbie area is somehow really good it would have zero replayability. No one would go there for memberberries and even if there's somehow unique clickies or focus effects you'd just farm them overleveled on d4. It is the literal definition of wasted development effort.

When you can beat D4 with +4 gear what's the incentive to farm motes to make gear +10. If it took this long to get out 1 update how the fuck do they plan on releasing a fucking xpac in a time frame that isn't glacial?

Of course it was made by AI. It couldn't recreate the shit EQ graphics though. I tried to coax it, but it generated ASCII instead. lol

The blue elf noob area makes new sebilis look like a masterpiece. Basically an open area with a bunch of mobs and absolutely no interesting land features.

Nek castle itself is alright, better than I thought it would be from this team. Though of course they did fuck up and make it a hard requirement to have sneak to complete some of the quest chain, though they are supposedly fixing that tomorrow.

And if you wanted something harder, the last boss in there at d0 is harder than all of the current D4 raid bosses (except sky). But no real reason to do him past D0 anyways because the only good thing he drops is a mana pres III item that you can just yoink off with a few motes.

The updated tool tips for spells and buffs actually getting better with motes was a nice change

Wait, are you saying they put in a full month laboring away on a fanfic zone... that you finished in literally one session?

I can't believe these absolute speds were handed the easiest, most obvious path to success (Release Classic, get each expansion out in ~3 months each thru at least PoP. Voila, about 1.5 years of nostalgic relevance before you have harder decisions to make) and tossed it aside to take a month to make one days worth of content. I'm more shocked that DBG didn't give them a development milestone path similar to the above so they could keep making money. Maybe there really is nothing left at Daybreak but CSRs and finance bros that have never logged in.

Fucking embarrassing.

I think the quest is a stupid waste of time but in case anyone wants/needs a quick guide here it is... I'm still debating on whether to even do it not. Think Kunark will be more for me but we'll see.
