I played on $tormhammer but was super casual so can't really comment on the economy, but I do remember the regular GM events and being handed raid gear just for showing up so I didn't feel the need to spend anything beyond the $40 monthly fee.

You'd think the extra cost would keep most of the riff raff out but there was still plenty of degeneracy.

I used to play on Stormhammer back in the day and I would mail checks for some bozo to farm me fungi tunics.

The first few months the server was up was incredible for low-end guilds and casual players because the GMs did give out a lot of loot. There was even a zone that dropped loot at higher rates from easier mobs.

However, none of it was useful (beyond twinking alts) to any guild that was even moderately competent and a it was total waste of time for top-tier guilds.

Our main tank and I went to a GM event in commons. I think we’d just downed Fennin? He got a Raex BP to go with his elemental legs, and I got a Ssraeshzaen Blood Cord to go with my VT legs… just for showing up. GM was just inspecting people and handing out gear that felt right.

As Tuco said, boxing is the way to go if you want to have a decent time going through the expansions. Unless you're dead set on being a Bard, I'd main an SK and have the Bard be backup. Add a Shaman and you can pretty much do anything ,(3x rogue mercs would shred). However SK + Bard would be fine on their own, especially with mercs (one heal, one rogue).

I liked rogue mercs over wizard because rogue mercs generate a lot less aggro; wizard mercs end up tanking unless you make an effort to hold aggro, which is more stress than one needs when tabbing between a couple characters. SK can hold aggro pretty effortlessly against a bard/healer/rogue, less so wizard.

I don't know how good of a mentor I can be when I've forgotten more about the game than I remember at this point. I do remember interesting item quests though.

To add to what others said already, here's stuff to do if you want to "see it all" and slow walk through the game rather than blasting through to the end:

Level 60
-Luclin tradeskill earring (can't remember the name of it - part 1 of the overall tradeskill chain)
-Coldain Shawl quest (pre-req for something later)

Level 65
-Breakdown in Communication (just to have done it and gotten the GoD experience, can solo it up to Qvic and get the initial aug)
-Aid Grimel (tradeskills part 2)

Level 70
-Epic 2.0 (two if boxing an SK - both Bard and SK 2.0s are really really good)
-DODH resist mask (25 missions, so a lot of work, fun though)
-Dragons of Norrath progression (as far as it's doable anyway; Tier 5 is very unnecessary but Tier 1-4 are all great rewards... Tier 1 and 2 can likely be done without any help)
-PoR level 70 auras

Level 75
-Jonas Dagmire's Skeletal Hand (another aug that's good for a little while and involves a bunch of quests, fun to run around doing this, wish the reward were good for longer)
-Direwolf Totem (quest in Icefall Glacier that results in a +3% or so double attack buff that's basically permanent)

Level 80
-Eron's Jewelry (tradeskills, part 3)
-I believe there's a Secrets of Faydwer mega-aug for the face, Steam something or other, that requires doing a ton of missions.
-There's a Faycite Resonance Barrier clicky that is marginally useful and the result of a bunch of other stuff, not really worth going out of your way for

Level 85
-Shawl 2.0 (tradeskills and missions, this one is fun)
-Seeds of Destruction zones have various rewards for doing all their quests, and some of those are good like the one from Old Bloodfields; the end result, Timeshear, really isn't worth it
-Old Man Mackenzie missions are a trio of fun monster missions, probably not worth actually farming for rewards, but do the two Guk missions and the Sol B mission once to have done them, an Enchanter can solo them all

Level 100+
-Shawl 3.0 (might be remembering wrong when you can start doing this one, but it's another missions+tradeskill deal)
-Epic "3.0" weapons (the purple aura shadowy weapons from doing the ROF missions, careful to only get the reward on your main persona because after that it's spent)
-Artisan's Prize (super duper ultra tradeskill quest, uses all the pre-reqs and pretty much everything else)
-Avoid the Alaran Tear quest; it gives you a slot-exclusive stat item for ammo, which adds some Dodge % and something else, but...just don't, it's a grand waste of time

Level 110+
-Burning Lands has four very strong evolving items (IIRC boots, arms, shoulders, ring) that can all drop from the first group mission
-There's a long quest in Torment of Velious to get an even more potent evolving earring
-All of the above can be leveled together as you go
Any idea how much of this can be done on a Shaman soloing with a merc?

I'm very seriously considering picking either a TLP that is far along or a Live server that I have not played on before, and starting 100% over from scratch on a Shaman just for shits and giggles.

A shaman without a real DPS class is going to be a little slower at it, but will get a bit more out of a tank/dps merc before having to switch to cleric. All the stuff before SoD was designed pre-merc, so should all be doable that way.

Definitely give Mischief and Teek a try. Both are free trade TLPs, so they are awesome.

Yeah im getting a real itch myself. Ive been testing a 4 box on a live server just going through the faydark unrest tofs to test/get ready for the tlp. But that itch for actually making a real character and grinding up, cazic has a pst raiding guild for modern content. But then this epic loot pinata tlp is coming so realistically i should wait and see how that goes first.

What are the options for 3 boxing with mercs? Are there tools that make boxing easier and won't get you banned? Can a lot of content be done with F2P or do you need to pay for the accounts to do the old stuff too (talking pre 110)?

I was going to do Teek, but it doesn't allow mercenaries yet apparently.

So, I am going to do Mischief. I was a little surprised though to see Mischief was not showing up as a HIGH population server though. Do people still play on Mischief, or has it gone the way of the dodo bird?

Don't think it will matter much though if people don't play there because I intend to slow-roll a molo (maybe duo/molo with my brother at times), so having people to play with is not my main concern. The only thing that concerns me is having raid gear available to purchase from the bazaar later on. I don't want to play up on a FREE TRADE server that doesn't have a decent end-game economy to purchase raid gear from if you know what I mean.

Daybreak operates with Schrodinger's 3rd party software. It's both legal and illegal they wont tell you till you get banned for it.

I still don't understand why a game, that is quite literally the best game in the industry for boxing, does not embrace that fact and build in boxing support in to the client. It just baffles the mind. The game, even though it was clearly not designed to be played this way, is practically designed perfectly for a boxer. Yet they treat it like it's the evil that shall not be mentioned.

It's stupid. Accept the fact that the game is extremely boxer friendly, embrace it, and collect the money from all the people that will pay for multiple accounts already.

It's a fair ways on in the game. Should be merging into FV soonish. Teek should be hitting SoD soon enough, which is when mercs unlock.

ISBoxer is what I use EverQuest

I have never heard of anyone being banned because of it.

All the old content can be done f2p, but leveling passed 85 or so as a f2p is painful because you can't effectively get AAs so the content starts to get more difficult.

I've been looking into the boxing thing alot. Apparently when they launched Rizlona which was a server TLP with no Truebox, they GMs to go after people using MQ2 pretty hard when the server opened. ISboxer seems to be safe, from what I've been reading they are able to target whatever /autofollow plugin people use in MQ2 or at least that's what some people think.

However, taking a step back, they probably just log anyone that has MQ2 installed and then ban certain characters, like healers or tanks, rather than ban whole teams. If they are banning a whole bot team at a time, likely that person just quits and leaves to something else. If they ban just a few of the accounts they might increase their revenue, because the person will probably just make a new account, eat some krono and level up a new healer/tank/CC.

My question is why wouldn't they just make certain servers specifically allow certain 3rd party software and be like, hey if you go to this server, you know what you are signing up for, so don't come complain to us?

I mean, they know that the vast majority of their Live server players use things like isboxer, some use MQ2, and some use other stuff. They know it. It's not a big secret.

The reality is that the game is designed in a way where it requires a group and at the same time the game is over 26 years old with a small but steady user base. It's not going to grow massively at any time in the future. Only a true idiot would believe that Everquest will ever gain a massive following anytime in the future with out a major rebuild of the game from the ground up. It is what it is basically.

It's like they know there is a necessity for being able to box in the game for their Live servers yet they make it a game of cat and mouse on whether you get caught and punished or not.

It's stupid. Seriously. It's fucking stupid.

Except the game for what it is at this point in time, bring the boxing software in-house, make it part of the game client, and allow people to play the game the way they need to rather than pretending that everyone is grouping up with friends and family when you damn well know they are not 90% of the time.

TLP is a completely different story. Keep the boxing software out of TLP. For Live servers, make it a normal built in feature and move on already.

I decided to try the test server since I just want to mess around and you get free gold membership on test. Having never boxed before, 4 boxing raw is... tough. Does isboxer have a better follow and position melee or should I just go with MQ2 and move on if I get banned?

I feel like you've gone through a few iterations of your six box setup over the years. Had a few questions if you could indulge:
  • Could you describe a few different six box class setups that you've used and/or considered, and pros and cons of each
  • To frame the above, what is the objective you have in the game? (all related current group content, AA's/leveling speed? old raids? some mix?)
I like workable off-meta stuff. I think I'd prefer to have a paladin in there somewhere, and probably a rogue as well. Less a fan of the very straightforward SK/Shaman sort of thing. I know basically nothing of the game past level 80, so my view on good classes or good synergies may be super misaligned with reality. Like is slow still relevant? Are attack buffs significant multipliers on damage still?

Six seems like a fun medium as it's challenging, but doesn't require MQ, which can turn into a computer science project very quickly.

I've tried basically three types of groups:

1. Plate tank with melee
2. Plate tank with caster DPS
3. Pet group

#1 and #2 are both great, I've been using #1 for the last few expansion (shd/brd/shm/bst/rog/mnk), before that I was shd/brd/shm/mag/mag/mag. Next expansion I but am going to transition to pal/enc/dru/mag/wiz/wiz this year because caster DPS got buffed.

#3 is a bit unwieldy, plate tanks are just too good at holding aggro in tough situations compared to pets that can let a mob through and eat the mage. Plate tanks are also very strong DPS for the last decade, so it's not like replacing them with a DPS class is a huge benefit.

Slow is significant, but not as much as it used to be.

Attack buffs are extremely significant. The entire game is built around buffs and synergy.

I wouldn't risk mq 2 on this new tlp, maybe on live. Redguides has a paid sub that gets you access to their paid forums where bans and suspensions thread is which is probably the best recent info. I'm not willing to drop the 10 im just gonna assume running mq 2 on the new tlp will get caught up because thats what happened on rizlona the last no true box based on what ive read.

Ive been doing isboxer with a 4 box and it works good for casters and to your point melee positioning is a pain in the butt. I'm just running mage, druid, cleric, enc. Enc pulls and charms, everyone else just tosses nukes all tied to 2 keys. I'm about to add a pally and wizard because it wouldn't really be much more work and I can pull on the pally instead of the enc as my enc keeps getting smoked, charm breaking during a pull etc. Also pet tanking is pretty ghetto had a death last night because the druid was just a hair too close and getting aggro over the pet.
