So I'm reading the reddit wiki for a guide to farm up a few greater holy/dark orbs for ruinga... and it lists the phantom train with a note that "Full Runs (Have to restart the dungeon every time you get the drop)"

Do they really mean I just need to farm up the entire phantom train because the boss can drop the orb?
Just farm the holy/dark daily (it's today). Farming bosses for specific orbs is just soul destroying and will make you hate the game. Also the drop rate is so low on 4* orbs... you can only really effectively farm 3* orbs. Your main source of 4* orbs will be from events.

Also unless you have a few 5* mage weapons, you really don't need AoE abilities like Ruinga. But that's just my playstyle/opinion.

Retaliate combo then? Cloud's doing pretty well for me, but I'm needing to farm greater orbs for shellga/protectga. I'm getting into the 50s for difficulty and not really having a problem (except the lower levels on my current party). The event dungeons at 60 are raping me though. I managed the 3 memory crystals from the FFVI event, I'm missing gilgamesh's from the current, and I don't think I can beat Seifer in the FFVIII event.

I'm looking at this so far:
Cloud 50 - Retliate + Spellblade for weak element or Armorbreak
Setzer 31 - Double Cut + Break (power usually, sometimes armor)
Wakka 31 - Boost + Double Cut
Aerith 29 - Curaga + something (silence/esuna/diara)
Tyro 50 - Cura + double cut.

Right now it seems to work, but the 30s are a bit squishy (low HP totals). So I should just keep on keeping on with this strategy while doing the leveling dungeon when I can?

Yeah that will work on almost everything, you just need Protectga and Shellga for the harder stuff as you say, they can go on Tyro and Aerith as your #1 priority to get. I suggest getting Shellga first.
Tempo Flurry is excellent on Cloud and is 3*.

A lot of people on reddit use Ruinga to clear trash but it's suboptimal as you need to wait for that exact character, just use your first round in a dungeon to retaliate and boost then each round the first 2 guys to fill their gauge can fire off a lethal attack.

Ruinga is incredibly strong but it takes a lot more to get it to work than Retaliate strategies.

Retaliate basically comes down to having one high level melee with retaliate, one good weapon and a bunch of double cuts. That's pretty easy to put together since most of the skills are two and three star abilities.

However, in order to get the most out of your Black Mages you need a substantial amount of gear and honed abilities. Ruinga is extremely powerful as a board sweeper but in order to make it work you need a high level black mage with the Mana Spring II Record Materia, solid gear to boost your MAG and you need to hone Ruinga to rank 3ish. Getting Ruinga to rank 3 is also not the best use of your Greater Orbs right away either. There are other skills that take priority over Ruinga in my opinion. Ja level Black Mage spells for one. Ideally you want to get one Ja to rank 4 so you can start to transition away from AGA spells. Waterja is the best first rank 4 spell in my opinion because very few things resist water, the orb requirements aren't that bad compared to other spells and, for some reason, Waterja has a slightly faster cast time than other spells. However once you start to assemble all of the pieces than Ruinga it becomes a really good board sweeper and if you run out of your rank 4 Ja spells on the boss you can fire off any remaining Ruinga charges for respectable damage too.

Chris and I have very different playstyles based on our relic pulls and preferences. He uses Retaliate and Advance strategies extensively. Because of my relic pulls my Mage team is extremely strong and I'm really hurting for physical damage. My best physical weapon is a 6 star Zantetsuken with several augments thrown on from junk (all of my 5* Shields...). For whatever reason I just cannot pull good physical damage relics. By comparison my Mage team is rocking multiple 5 star weapons and armor. So it makes sense to me to go with a Mage Meta (or Mega Meta if you read reddit).

Thanks guys. I've been doing some redditting about it. With my cast I've got one 5* mage weapon (lillith rod) that is actually one of the better healer staves for my group as well. I've got a couple 5* weapons, so I'll focus on retaliate until I can't.

Seems like my biggest stumbling block is levels, so I need to use the XP dungeon to the fullest.

Yeah the gear you pull drastically alters the characters and strategies you use, everyone is going to have their own unique play style. I think the stuff I'm posting is the best default stuff to do without gear though.

Full Break pretty much replaced Advance for the odd time I used it, it's the best 5* skill no competition. I've recently finished one of each type of team bar Cloud/Vanille/Hope not at level cap yet, I think they are both the best possible setups without better relics and 5* Black Magic. I'm working on a Dismissal team now. Here are my two teams any feedback?

Man, I've been missing part of the meta the entire time. Sit Cloud up front, everyone else in the back and just retaliate the first round of every battle?

This is my generic setup. Sephiroth is actually a swing character. I've been using Paladin Cecil a lot these days because he has a fantastic set of skills. But this is my "go to" setup that can clear most content and just gets tweaked as needed:

Yeah that's the best bit! With Double Hit RM probably on your healer, you can set up Retaliate AND bounce up to 4 attacks back on the first turn - this usually kills the entire wave. On daily events you can use Double Cut/Tempo Flurry as well since there is no boss to save for and just wipe everything out.

You'll notice that I'm using a shitty 3* Sword on Vaan too because it has like 3 defense on it. He never attacks an enemy so the weapon does nothing. Wakka I do build for damage since I can squeeze some more DPS out of breaks.

Heads up.

I assume most of you live in the U.S. but just in case... This Friday is Black Friday. Huge sales and is the busiest shopping day of the year. To cash in on the day, DeNA is offering another, one day only, Lucky Draw on Black Friday. So try and get up to 25 Mythril beforehand. Should be possible for most people since there will be one more event (10 Mythril), 6 Mythril from daily logins and upwards of 16 Mythril from the Dungeon event released last night.

What are they giving us? Relic draw for only 25 mithril?
See the banner in the post above:

The way the last Lucky Draws worked was like this. You can only roll on the banner once. But that roll was at a discount. You pulled 11 Relics for 25 Mythril (half off since it's normally 50) or if you're spending real money it's also half the number of gems needed for an 11x pull. Each Relic has drawn has a 12% chance of being a 5 star. The nice thing is that they've removed all of the generic 5 stars and shared soul break 5 stars from the pool. If you pull a 5 star relic it is guaranteed to be a character specific soulbreak relic.

You, definitely, want to pull on this banner. Results can vary wildly but between the discount and the fact that if you do pull a 5 star it's guaranteed to be a character specific it's pretty much impossible to pass up the chance. This is also the only way to get some relics that have only been featured once and aren't likely to ever be featured again like Luneth's Tyfring. Of course you can't count on it but it's worth mentioning. A few weeks back when we had a series of 5 Lucky Draws I ended up with 5 relics. The best of those were "meh" and two of them were outright junk. But it's still worth pulling.

Personally I've received zero 5 stars in my last 32 pulls. There was a 1.67% chance of that happening.

Statistically I have the same 75.5% chance as everyone else to pull a single 5 star from this Lucky Draw. Gambler's fallacy puts my chances at 100% since "I'm due." The pessimist in me has a feeling I'm going to go zero for 43 on 5 stars.

Bahamut (XIII) Elite down with 10 seconds left on the clock. That was an extremely tense fight.

XIII is another realm where I don't have a good physical weapon for (like most realms because RNG is RNG). So I went Mage Heavy with Cloud, Yuna, Sazh, Vivi and Rydia. Yuna has Hymn of the Fayth as a big group heal + Heavy Regen and Sazh has Boon for Shellga + Hastega. My primary goal for the trash was to escape it without losing too much health and get the soulbreak gauge built up for Yuna and Sazh. Hastega is mandatory for this fight. Vivi and Rydia were my primary trash sweepers though once Yuna and Sazh got their hits in. Vivi was loaded with Ruinga R3 and Waterja R4. Rydia had Meteor R2 and Thundaja R4. This was my first experiment bringing Meteor to a dungeon outside of the Daily and I was very happy with the results. I was gambling a bit using Mana Spring 1 on her and she got 2 out of 4 refreshes which was enough to get her into the Bahamut fight with full Thundajas and 2 Meteors. But why Rydia? Access to 5 star BLM and she can uses whips. Sleipnir's Tail is my highest MAG item but only Quistis and Rydia can use it.

As for Bahamut getting up Mitigation is the key to this fight (like most others). It took about 3 tries to get Boon and SSII (from a RW) off before any attacks and got very lucky that Tempo Storm hit on the first try on my successful run. Used my Witch's Hat from Halloween to boost Vivi and Rydia and then just started to blast away. Fully buffed and with a resisted Mental break both of my BLMs were hitting for about 8,500. Yuna was only hitting for about 5,000 (Diaga scales with Mind and the Witch Hat buff doesn't help). About halfway through the fight I refreshed Boon, SSII and hit Hymn of the Fayth. As I mentioned above I finished him off with 10 seconds on the clock.

1 more Elite to finish off (IX Soulcage which doesn't give a Stamina Shard) and I'm at max 146 max stamina.

Had about 25 seconds left, Blazefire Sabre and Gold Bangle helped! Went for the opposite approach with what I call "Maxtaliate", every character is able to double hit other than my Wakka support who rotates Full/Armor Break to build up Status Reels for a psudeo Advance - forgot the fucking XIII ball though didn't I? Had to S/L once to get triple mitigation up (Full Break/Sentinel Grimore/Protect and Shell).

I want to run Mage Meta for the FF9 event though, test out Eiko and Mana Pean. Of course Vaan is a fucking requirement!!!

I wish you could convert orbs. Or buy them. I would blow someone for greater earth orbs at this point as they are holding me back from getting Protectga and something else that I can't remember now.

It's still a few months down the road but there is a feature for Orb Conversion in Japan. You can either trade 10 lesser orbs to go up a level or you can trade 1 higher orb to go down a level. So you can trade 10 normal orbs for 1 Greater or you could trade 1 Major orb for 10 Greater. There's a Gil cost as well but that's manageable.

It's tied to User Interface overhaul so we're likely to get it sooner or later. But it's likely to be 2 or 3 months out yet.

Yeah, I was in your same boat for awhile and then I got 4 from a dungeon towards the end of the recent ff8 event. Also like the 3rd elite dungeon in XII the boss battle, its the 3 ratmen looking things, its the first battle and it drops greater earth orbs.

So happy Eiko mc came out, now I'll be able to get a decent white mage to 65.
