Mustadio (again, i'm going off a memory from probably 20+ years ago) had some fairly low hit rate cool abilities but nothing special. Most people went with Chemist for him because they could use Guns and they had all the item effects so you could just run around phoenix downing people vs. trying to wait for Revive casts from whms.

You pick up concentration from Archer which changes the hitrate dramatically (been awhile, I think it doubled? For abilities? Or something, and changed regular attack hitrate to 100%) and then you pick up the weapon break skills from Knight (use that as his sub from Engineer) and it changed the success rate of the breaks to fairly high levels if not outright 100% depending on level.

Will have to look at the WOTL stuff for PSP; I'm pretty sure I don't want to give SE 60+ for a barely graphical update.
I think Mustario had the longest range, combine him with worker 8 and you got a duo that could take on most of the game.

Honestly there are so many cool characters with interesting abilities/etc in the game, but for almost all of them you kind of get them when you're either already OP or working towards it and their abilities just don't really match up. Like the Dragon and her Boy; both cool characters and the knight guy could do all the status effects. Super awesome and with certain goals (Deep Dungeon actually comes to mind) they were pretty cool. But not as cool as having a teleporting ninja wielding two top end spears who blocks every attack with blade grasp. Mustadio you get early enough where you can build him up without having to spend time accumulating like a madman to catch up. I had completely forgotten about the robot guy, though yeah I remember him having some ability that had gnarly range.

Yeah Mustadio's strength is getting him so early.

Also another thing that was fixed for WotL was Blade Grasp working on magic attacks.

The story characters you got early (or who had decent class setups) had a leg up and this was indeed a positive for Mustadio, but concentrate combine with his gun abilities made him a major force late game as well. And yeah Chocobo Mounted Mustadio plus W8 could solo the game, but then again Orlando on a chicken solo could pretty much do the same. Ignoring Orlando who is basically on his own power tier, my top five powerful NPCs basicalyl goes like this:

Agrias- You get her early and her holy sword skill dominates the entire game, especially if you give her Orlando's weapon. If you are grinding to infinity, she doubles as an amazing white mage (or Math if you are really into cheese) and has the widest selection of gear options in her base class of anyone.

Worker 8- Great in magic heavy combats like the battle for the secret zodiac. Not much more needs to be said here.

Reis- Max her out as a monk and you really do not need to do much else. She hits ridiculously hard and can wear some unique gear for a monk.

Weingraf- His debuff game is the best in the whole roster and he deals good damage on top of that. His main drawback is you get him raw and fairly late in the game.

Melieadoule- Kind of a pain in the ass to level up and to obtain, but her skills are super powerful and she hits like a freight train.

Honorable Mention: Cloud- Fully leveled up, he is almost on Orlando's level. But you have to go through a ton of shit to get him at level one and then a ton more to get all of his special skills after that. And you don't get him until the very end of the game. This is a character for Autists only.

Honroable Mention 2: Rapha- She is the only NPC with mage oriented abilities in her base class and therefore the best option for a permanent caster in the roster. While mages without the word "Math" in their title tend to fall off late game, she can still put up respectable numbers as a white/black combo mage. And if you don't exploit Razma to pump her Brave stat, she is a good Treasure Finder character too.

There's also Catch farming where you set up a battle versus enemy ninjas just right that the only action they can take is to throw at the person you want thrown to. In the Darkest Dungeon they can throw close to anything including incredibly rare or otherwise impossible to get in multiples.

Trying to do the Darkest Dungeon properly you soon start to run in to enemies that are massively higher level than you to the point they're getting 3 actions for every 2 of yours (or more) and the best answer is to just grind exp on those fucks. You're 20 levels above me? Alright then. We'll level up every other turn. That's all well and good except then you leave the dungeon and the story fights to finish out the game are level locked. It needed a hidden flag where if you finish the place the last areas of the game are all level 99.

Honestly all I remember about the dungeon to get Zodiark is basically standing still and then having the token Move-Find person getting hit with all the Brave Down (or Faith Down? honestly don't remember) abilities from Beowulf (had to look his name up; Phazael said Weigraf but my brain told me he never joined. Research!) that made you a pussy but also drastically increased your abilities of finding rare items on certain tiles. And then it was just Mustadio freezing the last mob in place forever while the Move-Find character just casually walked around the map picking up all the rare drops.

Humble brag removed~

The problem is that item find there had two possibilities of items for you to find so you would find the rare one, leave, save, and redo it

again and again

With a better chance of getting the good item if your bravery was lower.

Yea it was a retarded system IMO. Honestly at release I think it was the first time I played a JRPG and felt like we got the "hard mode" i had only heard rumors about existing like FF4. Between the noob fight traps that would wreck saves, the posability of flat losing a special character forever, the item find annoyance, the ass fucking of random fights at end game, etc.

I loved it but man it was an eye opener lol.

Yeah; the key was to drop their Brave to zero using the Brave Down ability from Beowulf. I think you also had to pick a special character to do it to otherwise there was a pretty good chance after the fight the person with super low/zero brave would leave your squad. Or spend some time after they traverse the map to raise their Brave above like 20 or something.

I only ever did the 100% complete game thing once with FFT; summoners were just trash generally compared to comparably built characters and you really never needed any of the super special drops from the dungeon. The top end storebought shit was definitely good enough.

The other aspect of deep dungeon was fighting against high level ninjas that would throw excaliburs and other top tier weapons that were limited. You just had to have someone equipped with Catch and you had all the weapons you wanted

Duckstation and I are having a time. Starting from scratch with the OG rom. Already I'm like "Oh,so the enemy healer thing just heals itself forever with no inventory? Ok, game."

I feel like I played this way back in the day but have zero memory of it beyond some fleeting moments. Like it’s zero memory. I went through my collection and it’s there for PS1. I haven’t had a working PS1 or PS2 in 15 years.

Playing through expedition 33, square should be kicking themselves because they could have made FF16 into this easily and mostly kept the story intact.

I’ve also never played 10-15 other than 14 up through Endwalker. I have 10 and 12 on my list for the coming year. It’s also coming time for me to replay 6 again. Haven’t played it again in a decade.

I first borrowed the game from my cousin. I couldn't beat the first fight. How am I supposed to win 2 versus 7? I tried over and over and over and it just didn't make any sense. I could get part of the way (at best) but that was it. On my third day of attempts I finally figured out your roster was more than Ramza and Delita and how to add them to the battle.

Reading manuals ain't a bad idea.

In hindsight it very clearly shows you a "Spots left" number, but yeah it absolutely does not give you the heads up right out the gate. As having just done that battle myself, the only reason I moved to a different space to place a character is because of ancient memories of exactly the same thing. As clear as mud, haha.
