Anyone that liked any part of Ogre Battle back in the day but didn’t like it overall should play Unicorn Overlord. It’s a modern ogre battle that does a lot of things better and removes the annoying stuff. I bought it for ps5 but really want to play it on PC. I tried putting a switch emulator on my steam deck but I couldn’t get it to work and haven’t gone back and tried again. That game is awesome though and only reason I want a switch emulator. I’d buy it again on PC but that company is stupid and won’t put it on PC.

Agreed on FF4 DS, the gameplay was solid and challenging enough that you had to put a little thought into what abilities you equipped, or whatever the new mechanic was. Certainly made playing through again more enjoyable then just another nostalgia trip. The original FF6 had so many bugs that you weren't sure what was working, what was broken, etc. For example I believe physical block was bugged and basically didn't work but magic block worked as physical block. But the game was so good at the time that people either didn't notice or didn't mind the bugs.

There was no way to voice or fix bugs so we just dealt with that shit.

There was also something funny with Evade. There came a point in the game that if you had Shadow's evade combination high enough he would basically always counter with Interceptor and take 0 damage unless it was something that couldn't miss. I'm not sure if it was Magic Evade or Physical Evade that was broken, but getting them to a certain point made single target attacks meaningless against you.

I knew it!

I just watched the complete synopses of the FFT plot... as I never really finished or apparently paid ANY attention lol

But, whew.. That escalated quickly.

The game always seemed to be balanced around not paying attention to esper leveling bonuses. I remember in early days when I didn't really know shit about the game mechanics beyond vanish-doom (which I rapidly banished to WoR xp grinding only) the game was still fairly challenging aside from Kefka being a wet fart. Once you learn how much of a difference focused esper leveling makes it becomes incredibly easily to just steamroll everything. If you stack some extra magic levelups on top of Terra and Celes's already high base magic they hit (and heal) like freight trains. Finding out Sabin's blitzes scale off of magic is a real game-changer for him power wise. Edgar's best tools (auto-crossbow and drill) were already good but hit so much harder with some strength (vigor) levelups.

I think FF4 DS is still my favorite FF game in terms of being challenging but not excessively tedious.

Yeah, I really enjoyed FF4 DS (which I think I played off of you challenging me to do it). Three playthroughs, need to micromanage augments so that you're as strong as possible on the third run to defeat the secret bosses. The normal game is significantly tougher as well, with fights like Milon and Dr. Lugae actually posing real threats. Calbrena+Golbez also gave me a bunch of trouble. It was awesome.

As for FF6, didn't know Sabin's blitzes scaled off magic until now, always gave him Str boosts. The last couple times I plowed through FF6, I made heavy use of +Mag (Strago, Terra, Celes) and +Speed. Giving characters a bunch of levels of +Speed (Raiden is the best at +2 IIRC) makes a humongous difference later on, with ATB bars filling at closer to Chrono Trigger speed.

The first time I played, when I beat the game with characters at like 1500 HP, I made a number of huge mistakes. Didn't focus esper leveling at all. Ran away from most battles to conserve strength (as I had very little). Used Vanish+Doom on basically every boss to get by. So when I got to the endgame and Vanish+Doom stopped working, I ran into some brick walls that took many tries to barely get past. Atma Weapon (both versions) took me a ton of tries. DOOM (statue) took me a ton of tries. What I remember being the worst, though, was Inferno. The robot in Kefka's Tower with the claws. Most of its physical attacks were one-shots, so my characters were constantly dying and needing revives.

Basically I accidentally beat FF6 on Very Hard the first time through.
