It is indeed just sad how you can destroy a game like FF7 because the insatiable need of "creatives" to make things different or unique, and generally...when dealing with remakes - that is destroying them.

I really liked FF7 Rebirth at first - it's everything I wanted Remake to be, from an actual re-creation of FF7's world perspective - and a pretty solid game on its own too. But, man, they just killed it with the whole Aerith thing at the end. It was so ungodly stupid.

Not sure why both FF7 remakes had to completely bungle the last 10% or so of the game. Like seriously, both games had their weak points but were mostly good, then they just completely went off the rails in the last 10%. First one has you fighting a bunch of fucking time gods on the Midgar Highway, second one has an absurdly long/tedious Temple of the Ancients followed by Aerith's death scene being cut away from so they can do a bunch of bullshit where they're all ambiguous about whether she lived or not, then have her spirit hovering around talking to Cloud all throughout the ending so it's like she never fucking left.

Is the third game just going to be more of that bullshit with Aerith's ghost hovering around? Talk about missing the entire point of FF7, coping with loss.

It drives me so goddamn nuts after how good the rest of the game was.

They just needed to do one of two things. Either remake Aerith's death and break our hearts all over again, stay true to the message of the original. OR have her death be prevented and have a great moment of catharsis that after all these years we'd get to see the rest of her story actually play out. Instead they went for the JJ Abrams Mystery Box bullshit. She's dead but we're gonna be all mysterious about it for 20 minutes so you're not actually sure at first, then we're gonna have her spirit pop up so much that the death means fuck-all. They somehow managed to be the worst of both worlds.

They're talking about a resurrection DLC. Doubt we'll have ghost following us around, but probs in some relevant cut scenes or some shit.

Watched Max talk about this now. Apparently the fiscal report was released which hints at it possibly not being released this year, with it being past April 1st in 2027 being more likely.

If it isn't released until April or later next year, might not even get the game announcement until the game awards show or another late year show. As he pointed out, game isn't even officially announced yet. We know it is coming, they're talking about it, but we don't even have the full name of it yet, with no teasers or trailers. Unlikely they will do the big reveal and start their marketing campaign 8+ months away from release. Far more likely then as a game awards / Tokyo game show / separate Sony showcase reveal with 3-4 months wait time.

Jun 2022 was the 25th anniversary stream which gave a 1 minute Rebirth teaser with related announcements but the release date wasn't until Feb 2024. Fall 2022 had some interviews but they waited til 2023 SGF for the open world gameplay trailer and did the marketing through the rest of 2023.

If it's mid 2027 it would be crazy to skip this year's SGF and release before next year's. Maybe they think Evercold for FFXIV will be that strong to end this FY, maybe they have some collabs that dictate timing, or maybe they are aiming for 7/7/2027. But at least one SGF in the next two years has to be part of marketing.

He talked about the 7727 too, but didn't feel it really made any sense since it's only part of the number. But if it is a mid 2027 release, a game reveal in December and 6-7 months of marketing with the last major trailer in SGF in 27 would make more sense than starting this year. Though I doubt any of this will be left to chance and they have full marketing teams designing the optimal hype so to speak. It's by far the biggest title Square Enix has in the making, hell, one of the biggest titles in gaming. Would not be surprised if this ends up getting the Skyrim treatment through time. Bundle editions, remasters for the next gen consoles with X price for upgrades if you already have it and so on. Once they start the marketing campaign, it's going to be everywhere and for a long time.

I for one am really excited, and while I am not as negative as Rajaah Rajaah , I do absolutely get where he is coming from. I just have more copium in that they (the actual OG creators) have been working on this for a long time, nothing is happenstance. They know what they are doing in every section of the game(s). So either they, as he mentioned, completely lost track of the point of the original, or they are saving up for a payoff and point in the last game. It's not like the person who designed Aerith and the concept of her loss isn't a part of the creative aspect of this game, and doubt he has forgotten losing his mom (I think it was?) and how he adapted that into the game. There is no more after this though, so... conclusion is coming and it is a day 1 buy for me.

Also really interested in seeing how they will manage the open world aspect. If the part in Rebirth where you fly the plane really is a teaser for Highwind. Or if it will be more of a FF X2? thing where if I remember correctly you had an airship but, selected and opened up POIs as you went along and landed only on specified areas. The map has a crazy amount of landmass that isn't explorable in Rebirth. But traveling around landing at random spots and suddenly "here there be dragons!" random encounters was part of the fun. Exploring and finding weapons. Not the same if you just look at a map screen and press "go here for X event". And REALLY hope they add exploration based finds of the summons and not just that cyborg kid following you around playing them in VR. Knights of the round should be behind a place you can see, but not get to unless you breed a golden chocobo and find it. Not just "hey I got a new summon you can try to fight!"

That was Hironobu Sakaguchi, I thought? And he isn't involved with this.

Well, I'm somewhat optimistic. The endings of the first two were ridiculously bad though.

If they're going to make a big thing out of reviving Aerith, then they should have made her death clearer in Part 2 instead of the JJ Abrams ambiguous weirdness. I'm still not 100% sure she even died. And during the ending I was too confused to actually feel anything, mourn her loss, or actually sustain any kind of emotional hit. We can't have that, people feeling bad about anything. At least they didn't immediately follow it with comedy like Dyne's death. Gotta lighten the mood quick before anyone has any real emotions!

7727 is a cool idea.

We need a Rocket Town DLC for Part 2, since that area was missing from the main game. They can use it to introduce playable Cid, the way they did with Yuffie in Part 1's DLC. Throw in a Dirge of Cerberus remaster and we'll have all the characters introduced. It would make total sense.

Also I'd like to see them do more with Jenova. Now that I know Jenova is basically The Thing, and only looks like a beautiful woman because she was mid-transformation into one when the Cetra managed to freeze her, trap her, or whatever they did.

A prequel movie dealing with The Thing vs The Cetra would be an amazing story. The Ancients were basically wiped out by this alien menace but eventually did manage to kill it.

I thought they had stated no more DLC, but who knows what they'll do after 3rd one I expect multiple different bundles of all 3 games with X features, etc. I'm far more optimistic than most, since they kind of ended Rebirth how I expected...with obvious mystery to mess with everyone and generate lots of theories. Plus I'm not freakishly focused on each Part's ending as if it should be a real "ending", since we all know there is another part coming.

Also they've really set up the Cloud lifestream sequence for part 3 to be even crazier than in the OG, that's where I'm expecting maximum payoff. Hilarious to me how some former "they can't change anything" people turned into "well now they have to change it so Aerith lives or what was the point". Max pretty much predicted they would swerve everyone with the Aerith scene as soon as he finished Remake.

I'm mostly like Rajaah for everything in Rebirth up until the end, I agree it was absolutely amazing and had me feeling like old school FF's. Very curious to see how they implement the airship, though, in Part 3, and how they're going to cover as much as we have left because there is still a shitload of game to cover from the OG. Hopefully new characters and their combat feel as varied as the ones in Rebirth did (although Cait Sith still sucks). Need to stick the landing with some decent explanations (we're 99.999999% certain it's a sequel but it still hasn't been completely expressed to be the case, yet), but if they innovate as well as they did between Remake and Rebirth for the 3rd game, and the combat is the same or better with materia loadouts, I'm all in for it.

But seriously. Materia loadouts. Needs to be a feature.

An email leak listed Hamaguchi attending IGN Live with an in-person meet and greet, so the director is literally in LA for the weekend. We'll see what happens tomorrow at SGF.

Aside from revealing the title, the trailer gave us a quick tease of what’s coming in the final chapter. The crew will be able to fly the Highwind airship around Revelation's open world; no matter where you take it, you can jump out of the ship and parachute to the ground in a seamless transition. You'll visit many key Final Fantasy 7 locations across the Planet, including Wutai.

Welp, that's cool.

I get the feeling that Aerith died, everyone else knows except Cloud who won't accept it. He'll probably see and accept her death during the Lifestream sequence.

I hope Wutai doesn't have the annoying part where Yuffie steals all of your materia, always hated that part of the original.

One thing I got a laugh out of is they basically revived the FFX-2 job system with outfit swaps for this
Between losing the caster character, needing materia loadouts, and wanting something better than Folios pivoting to a Job system is not the worst idea. They could literally have us get the Advent Children jobs & outfits plus make other callbacks or hell do other game collabs adding to ability diversity if they are going to do DLC for the 'final' game.

Hopefully Chadley dies and there's no VR crap, no 10 round bullshit, fight everything in the real world with plenty of superbosses beyond the obvious Weapons.

edit: Maximilian Dood is interviewing Hamaguchi at his house, they refer to jobs as the Fits system and are doing 4 Fits per character.

I'm really glad they are releasing PC same time as consoles. With the talk of "we have to kill the protectors to save the planet" I really hope ruby and emerald weapons aren't part of the mainline story, way cooler to have it as post game optional content. That way they don't have to dumb the fight down.

Kinda felt a bit like the different roles from XIII, as well. Hamaguchi confirmed in the Max interview each character will have a total of 4. Have to assume some variation between characters.

Cross platform on release is the fucking best, apparently there is gear sets, as well.

The fact that this isn't clear, and that they decided to have weird mindfuck games with Cloud, is super annoying. Aerith being laid to rest is one of the most potent scenes in video game history and I don't even think they recreated it in the second game, too busy jumping around with the POV to make everything as confusing as possible, not showing the actual stab, being totally sanitized for kidz...

Still not over it. My enthusiasm for Pt 3 should be through the roof and instead I'm just wondering what else they'll fuck up.

Yeah it's pretty much 1:1 with X2. Wish they'd shown more of them though. Tifa's outfits are the ones everybody's gonna want to see. Kind of a waste that we got this vast outfit collection after losing Aerith. We're down 50% of the attractive grown women in the game and they drop fashionquest on us now.

Rocket Town, Wutai, and the Vincent part of Nibelheim were all skipped over in Pt 2 I think (not sure about the last one). So I'm expecting to see all the missing Disc 1 stuff show up in this one. Being able to fly around the world is cool, answers the question of how they'd integrate all of that across games. Guessing most of the existing areas, like Cosmo Canyon, will be largely empty of any real stuff to do outside of story events.

Wouldn't make much sense to go back and do sidequests and stuff in all those same places from Rebirth. So yeah I'm guessing open world, with various story events popping up around it. Might be similar to FFX2 there too actually, that game had a big open world where you could go anywhere, but only a few areas had "events" going on at any given time. Those events were story triggers that'd make something happen and move the game along. So story events here could be things like Ultimate Weapon hovering over Cosmo Canyon, or the attack on Fort Condor, or Rocket Town in general. Might be able to do a lot of this game in all kinds of orders, as a result.

Wonder how it'll handle power transference. Can't remember what the second game did. Think it started you at level 30 if you had clear game save from the first? With a cap of 70 or so. This one will probably start you at 50 with a cap of 99.

This barely has any resemblance to FF7 at all at this point so it really needs to be taken as an entirely new project, a love letter to FF7 with a fair bit of silliness, rather than a straight remake. Hopefully most people know that before they buy.

Weird that they burned the Reunion title on Crisis Core completely unnecessarily, it would have fit Part 3 like a glove.

Her magic outfit at least helps make her breasts look bigger lol

Cat Sith had a classic summoner outfit on in the trailer (the single horn hat and robe), so we know that is potentially a job. Tifa's magic job was called Black Mage. Cloud got swapped into a "warrior" outfit when they showed the UI, which was a white body armor suit thing, which we also saw Barret using in the trailer. So it seems like there will probably be some overlap in jobs between characters - if not in job title, then at least in archetype.
