GdT needs to fucking retire. I understand what he was getting at with this, but he's far too maudlin and heavy handed to pull it off. Actors kept it from being complete trash, even though they probably would have been better off ad-libbing the entire thing. Art direction was far too Disney Princess for this. WTF was he was thinking.
Well, he did make a movie about a lady fucking a fish man that got best picture. That's a pretty fucked up victory I guess.

This is one of the worst takes on the Frankenstein tale to date. I thought it was an Uwe Boll movie.
Lol okay now we trolling

If I watch the other Frankenstein movies they better be fucking cinematic and storytelling masterpieces beyond belief. You guys have set the bar high

Good luck to you

I thought it was great. I found the first act I was getting a bored but it really sets the stage for the rest of the movie, which I thought was terrific. Big props to the guy playing monster.

4.5/5 titties

I'll note that I've never seen any other Frankenstein movies
You've never seen Robocop?

I got bored halfway through. IDK the monster started asking for a companion and I turned it off. Whatever.

I could not understand the hype behind Shape of Water, it was the most homogenized and boring rendition of the Monsterfucker trope but people acted like it was a revolutionary act of cinema. He loves his prettyboy monsters.

I read the novel back in high school I think, and can't remember much...was the monster unkillable in that as well? Del Taco seemed to try to make the monster more sympathetic and Victor less so from what I remember. Mary Shelley's monster killed quite a few innocents, I think?

He was stronger and stuff, but he didn't have Wolverine regeneration powers. He did kill Frankenstein's love, his little brother, and I think some other people. The little brother's nanny was also hanged for the kids death mistakenly.

There's just a lot in this movie that never happened in the book like the arms dealer benefactor, Victor being so brazenly open about his experiments and procuring bodies, etc. The blind man also wasn't eaten by wolves which was retarded.

It's just not a faithful adaptation, and Del Taco tried to make this almost like some stupid fairy tale for his own vanity I guess.

yeah book Frankie was way more monstrous and killed more stuff, he was sympathetic but the Disney-version here where fucking Frankenstein is friends with all animals (except wolves lol) is hilariously bad

some interesting bits but between House of Dynamite, Weapons, and this we have a bunch of movies this year that have crazy casts, kinda meh endings, and feel a bit unfocused. All have multiple POV chapters as well, wonder why that kinda blew up this year

This movie is ok if you treat it as a 3 episode netflix TV show and watch an hour a night basically, there is fun stuff that happens but this is an adult drama not a horror. Everything is face value and there isn't really much the movie has to say except man is a feeling creature and Victor Frankenstein is probably a jew

The Frankenstein story (to me) has always been a distorted Adam and Eve retelling. Man trying to play God, so obviously it’s corrupted from the start.

A criminal (corrupt) brain to start, born into a world trying to eat or destroy it instead of Eden, then no real purpose after birth (like naming all the things), and wondering why it doesn’t have a mate. The distorted similarities are there.

Maybe the Wolverine healing factor was another distortion— this time on mortality?

Anyway saying what I will about this movie, GDT did a BBC interview and its one of the better director bits I've seen, in that he is an immediately likeable dude. He came across certain ways when doing his Cribs-style shit back in the Pan's Labyrinth days (kind of hard to not seem autistic when you watch movies on a couch with a lifesized Exorcist figure), but he's mellowed considerably in old age. A good director that is talented in the thing that he does, even if a certain uhhhh pattern has emerged over time.

I think part of the problem with this film is he hired two of the most pretentious dickheads in Hollywood. It's like Oscar Isaac and Christopher Waltz are trying to out act one another by pretending who has the longest stick shoved up their ass. Then they have that crack whore looking Mia Goth trying to act shakespearian. These people are not a good fit in this film. At all.
