Yeah, your right. I just was hoping for the fact he maybe has gotten older and wanted to do something serious, but nope.

Guess I'm still in the camp of him being over hyped. His only strong suite is his artistic direction, but who cares if the movie sucks. It's a one trick pony.
At this point I don't even know where del Toro gets this mythical director status from. Feels like it's just nerds who liked Hell Boy, or because Pan's Labyrinth was good looking. But I look at his works and not only am I unimpressed, I'm confused.

Pretty much. I like the first movie I ever saw that he did was the devil's backbone, it was a pretty good ghost story, Pan's labyrinth wasn't bad because it was just so unique, but once Hollywood caught on to him and he started making the Hellboy movies and what have you, it's all been pretty shitty.

I remember going and seeing blood mountain in the theater and that movie was retarded. Looked good but it was just dumb. Very similar to this movie from a Gothic perspective.

I think it became a darling of Hollywood because he was foreign filmmaker that was on The cutting edge to try to sell more asses in seats. Meanwhile you had dudes out of Korea making stuff like old boy really pushing the envelope.

Look I'm no Cinema expert alike our dude from the Switzerland that somehow attends all the various film festivals and what have you, but I know what I like in a movie and a good story, and I honestly think del Taco is way overrated. Guess he has an artistic vision and can accomplish that on celluloid or I guess digital, but like I said in our previous post who cares that the movie is just stupid.

It sucks because I was really looking forward to this movie because I love the book, when I had faith that maybe he was going to do it justice, but instead he turned it into modern day BS.

Par for the course I guess.

I thought the movie was... okay. The most annoying part was how Victor was written, mostly how he acted toward the Monster once it woke up. Getting pissed and yelling at a shambling corpse for not knowing English after a few days, chaining him up and beating him. I would have expected him to treat the monster with much more care so he could eventually parade it in front of his peers to show how much of a genius he was.

6/10 will never think about it again.

It was a good watch to me. Well crafted but felt sort of like it was missing a soul. I’ll never rewatch it but I won’t regret watching it.

I don’t 100% get del Toro hype but I’ll admit I’ve watched Pan’s Labyrinth a dozen times. And the first Hellboy to me is like Independence Day - fun and dumb.

He makes cool looking monsters. Plot, character development? Not so much. Pacific rim was fucking retarded but it looked cool as hell.

In the book, Frankenstein is disgusted and horrified by his own creation pretty much immediately, and flees far from it, leading to the creature wandering in the wild and slowly learning human interactions by observing a family.

I haven't seen this movie but I assume that's the reason why they went with him hating, berating and beating his creation, because he can't stand being around it but they chose not to have him flee from it for this retelling of the classic story.

That's pretty much what happens in the movie. However, up until the point of creation, Viktor is obsessed with the notion of giving life. To accomplish one's lifelong goal and then to immediately hate it? Pretty fucking dumb.

It got the "Modern Audiences" adjustment, which is all it took to sink this on its own. Del Toro has flirted with that shit (I am a misunderstood unique snowflake subversive) bullshit forever, especially in anything from Hellboy 2 onward. His unique cinematography and strong casts have carried his bullshit, but this movie was just fucking too many sins. That Razorfist dude has a rant that pretty much summed up my thoughts, short version being this is a del Toro-ed up shot for shot remake of the Mary Shelly's Frankenstein (close to book) movie from a decade ago, but with all the subversion and feminism shit injected into it. And worse his major plot changes basically make the bulk of the story make zero sense. This is the first movie I have ever thought about walking out of in quite a while (ironically, Pacific Rim Job being the last one) it was so bad. And all this despite some really great cast choices.
