I've only seen a couple of episodes of Lost so my tolerance for this kind of bullshit may be higher than it is for people who gave that show six seasons.

It gets worse the more you think about it.

You don't make the tree your maybe exit contingent on being able to pull it out after committing. You make the tree your entrance. As soon as the sun is up and the ghouls are inert you pull the tree up, repel down, dig dig dig and get pulled back out. If you can't make an entrance with the tree you can try digging down through the earth to the chamber and if that also fails then and only then do you need to entertain using the tunnels to get in.
