3D print no, but you could 3D CNC machine it. Probably would still not have the same strength as drop-forged though, so the joke still ...sorta... lands.

Yeah, I got the joke part of it but I'm curious if that can actually be done. I know fuck all about 3D printing. I know you make shit with plastic and chocolate but that's it.

You can 3d print with other materials like concrete and metal. Can you make a helicopter rotor to spec? Highly doubt it and wouldn’t get in one that was going to try.

There is a 3d printing process with titanium (and aluminum) called sintering, which _may_ create strong enough parts in the future. To my knowledge, the ones that exist now a) only make small things and b) the small-things-sintering printer will set you back ~$750k

I’m sure the prices will continue to come down and the tech will keep getting better. Engineers find some incredible geometry that improves strength and other cool properties so it’ll be interesting to see where it goes.

This one here prints all kinds of metal, looks fairly large , and is only a quarter mil $.

Wait... That bolt or bolts (Jesus Nut) are usually 4340/300M steel and sometimes titanium, depending on the helicopter. Someone who knows or does 3D printing, can you actually 3D print these to spec?

Your image is from the actual wiki page from the "jesus nut".
Story is not real but the laughs are:

"Robinson helicopters, particularly the R44 and R22 models, are popular but considered dangerous due to their design. Crashes often involve rotor blade separation, slicing through the cockpit and tail boom, and post-crash fires, even after low-impact events. From 2006–2016, the R44 was involved in more fatal crashes in the US than any other civilian helicopter."
